Delhi the Rape and Crime Capital of India : NCRB Report

According to the records of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), most number of rape cases were reported in the national capital in 2014. It clearly shows that the Delhi is the most unsafe place for women in India among the cities in India. The NCRB collates data from all first information reports filed in police stations across the country.

During the past years, Delhi reported a larger actual number of reported rapes than other cities, but cities in Madhya Pradesh, including Gwalior and Jabalpur, reported higher numbers of rapes proportionate to their populations. This year, Delhi is higher in both absolute and proportionate terms.

The city reported 1,813 rapes in 2014, up from 1,441 in 2013. While Delhi continues to lead other big cities in the number of reported rapes, the increase in reported cases has tapered after a sharp spike in 2013.

New data shows that Delhi has become the crime capital of the country witnessing a sharp increase in cases of robbery, burglary and theft. The rate of cognisable crime under Indian Penal Code charges doubled in the national capital to 856 per lakh population. As per the National Crime Record Bureau data, there were 15265 incidents of crime committed against women during 2014 in Delhi alone.

According to the NCRB Report, Madhya Pradesh tops the cognisable crime chart among the states. The state has recorded a total of 2,72,423 cognisable crimes in 2014 under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The BJP-ruled state accounted for 9.6 per cent of the total crimes reported in the country followed by Maharashtra which stood second with 2,49,834 crimes reported last year, which is 8.8 per cent of the total crimes registered in the country.

Madhya Pradesh also tops the list of sexual offences under the IPC. The highest number of rape cases — 5,076 — were reported in Madhya Pradesh followed by 3,759 in Rajasthan.
