1. PM inaugurates National Conference of SC/ST entrepreneurs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated National Conference of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes entrepreneurs in the national capital. The conference is being organised by the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI), on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of father of the Indian constitution Dr B R Ambedkar. The programme, which is being conducted to seek the support from the Centre in promoting entrepreneurship among Dalits, is being attended by more than 1200 Dalit entrepreneurs. Prime Minister Modi has initiated several measures to boost entrepreneurship among youth, and especially among Dalits.

2. Legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler passes away
Haskell Wexler, the influential cinematographer who won Oscars for his work on 1966’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and 1976’s “Bound for Glory,” died at the age of 93. Haskell Wexler was one of the most creative and significant cinematographers in movie history. The cinematographer is primarily responsible for the lighting and framing of films, and Wexler — with his dramatic black-and-white compositions, his painterly use of color and his expert eye for dramatic angles — was one of the best.

3. Amitabh Kant appointed CEO of NITI Aayog
The Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has transferred Disinvestment Secretary Aradhana Johri and given Industry Secretary Amitabh Kant the additional responsibility of being Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. Ms. Johri has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Authority for Chemical Weapons, a statutory body under the Cabinet secretariat, while the role of steering the government’s ambitious disinvestment agenda has now been entrusted to Neeraj Kumar Gupta, an Uttar Pradesh cadre officer of 1982 batch. Mr. Gupta is presently serving as the Special Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises.

4. Reliance Jio launches 4G telecom service
Mukesh Ambani introduced his much-touted 4G telecom services, restricting it only for Reliance employees for now. Reliance is preparing to shake the telecom industry with a full-bloodied launch around March next year. For Ambani, this is the second calling in the telecom business after his first venture, Reliance Communications, went into the kitty of younger brother Anil as part of a family settlement between the siblings.
On offer from Reliance Jio Infocomm will be low-cost 4G devices costing as low as Rs 4,000 and a host of services along with the regular voice and data. These will include a big collection of music (Jio Beats); around 200 television channels with back-up (Jio Play) and movies (Jio on-demand).

5. Lupin gets FDA approval for generic Femhrt tablets
Drug major Lupin has received US health regulator’s approval to market Fyavolv tablets, used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, in the American market. The company has received received the final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Fyavolv tablets. The company’s product is the generic equivalent of Warner Chilcott’s Femhrt tablets, which are indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The Mumbai-based firm has launched eight products in the US this fiscal and received approvals for 19 from the FDA.

6. Government sets up Rs 40,000 cr NIIF
GOI has announced that the Rs 40,000 crore National Investment and Infrastructure fund (NIIF) has been set up and its chief executive will be finalised by January. Several sovereign funds and pension funds from Russia, Singapore, UK and UAE are willing to participate in the fund and cooperate with it at various levels. While the government will invest Rs 20,000 crore in NIIF from the Budget, another Rs 20,000 crore is expected to come from private investors. Market regulator Sebi has approved the setting up of the NIIF. It has been registered with SEBI as Category II Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) on December 28, 2015.

7. India is Asia’s deadliest country for media personnel: Watchdog
Nine Indian reporters were among 110 journalists killed around the world in 2015. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has dubbed India as “Asia’s deadliest country” for media personnel, ahead of both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Of the nine, some of them were reporting on organised crime and its links with politicians and others for covering illegal mining. It said five journalists were killed in the course of their work and four for undetermined reasons.
The report said, “the inadequacy of the Indian authorities’ response is reinforcing the climate of impunity for violence against journalists“.

8. China launches ‘most sophisticated’ observation satellite Gaofen-4
China has successfully launched its “most sophisticated”observation satellite, Gaofen-4, as part of the country’s high-definition earth observation project. Gaofen-4 was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwestern province of Sichuan aboard a Long March-3B carrier rocket. It was the 222th flight of the Long March rocket series. Gaofen-4 is China’s first geosynchronous orbit HD optical imaging satellite and the world’s most sophisticated HD geosynchronous orbit remote sensing satellite.

9. 18th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting held in New Delhi
The 18th session of the India-Iran Joint Commission was held in New Delhi on December 28, 2015. The session was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister of India (EAM) and H.E. Mr. Ali Tayebnia, Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In the Joint Commission Meeting (JCM), EAM mentioned that India considers Iran as an important partner and expressed satisfaction at the growing bilateral interaction in diverse area. She underlined the efforts underway to enhance bilateral economic cooperation in energy, infrastructure – including shipping, ports and railways – and trade and commerce.

10. Report of Vijay Kelkar Committee on Revisiting & Revitalizing PPP Model released
The Report of the Committee on Revisiting & Revitalising the PPP model of Infrastructure Development chaired by Dr. V. Kelkar has been issued and also uploaded on the Ministry of Finance’s website.
Committee Formation
In the Union Budget 2015-16, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced that the PPP mode of infrastructure development has to be revisited and revitalised. In pursuance of this announcement, a Committee on Revisiting & Revitalising the PPP model of Infrastructure Development was set-up which was chaired by Dr. Vijay Kelkar.

11. Globe Soccer Awards 2015 conferred
The Globe Soccer has presented the sixth edition of Globe Soccer Awards 2015 to the winners at a ceremony held in Dubai, UAE. Awarded for excellences in the field of football, Globe Soccer Awards are the first and only awards for the Best Club Director and the Best Agent of the Year. The awards conferred were based on the performance of the players and football clubs in 2015.

12. Motorhead frontman Lemmy dies of cancer aged 70
Motorhead frontman Lemmy has died aged 70, two days after learning he had cancer. Lemmy formed the rock group in 1975 and recorded 22 albums, including Ace of Spades, as he became one of music’s most recognisable voices and faces. Lemmy, born Ian Fraser Kilmister, formed Motörhead in 1975 and was its only constant member, as singer and bassist. He lived in Anglesey, Wales, as a child and acquired the nickname Lemmy while at school, although he claimed to have had no idea where it came from.
