1. INS Viraat wins its last regatta
Aircraft-carrier INS Viraat has won the coveted Cock Trophy during the Western Fleet Whaler Pulling Regatta, making it the last time the warship participated in the event before she is decommissioned. INS Viraat was declared overall winner team and awarded the trophy. In the keenly contested event, aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya emerged runner-up. The winning ship will be called the Cock Ship till the next regatta.
Vice-Admiral S.P.S. Cheema, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Mumbai-based Western Naval Command, presided over the finals as the chief guest and also gave away the prizes to the winners. The whaler is a 27-foot-long boat that is rowed by five men called ‘pullers’ using 15 to 17-foot-long oars who cover a distance of 1.3 km. The teams practice hard for several months prior to the regatta.

2. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank officially launched
The China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), has been officially launched in Beijing and is expected to start operation in early 2016. The launch of the bank has came just six months after an article of agreement (AOA) was signed by 57 prospective founding members in June, and 26 months after President Xi Jinping proposed it in October 2013. It is the first major multilateral lender with developing countries holding the majority of the shares and votes. The AIIB will be operational after board of directors and executive council meet for the first time. The meetings are slated to from January 16 to 18 in Beijing.

3. Belarussian girl Aryna wins ITF singles title
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus has defeated Viktoria Kamenskaya of Russia in straight sets to win the singles title in the USD 25,000 NECC-ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana, Pune. The 17-year-old Belarussian fired booming returns and broke Viktoria five times during the course of 6-3 6-4 victory in the final to pocket USD 3,920 as winner’s prize (Rs 2.60 lakh), only the second title of her career.
Aryna’s only other title triumph was at the USD 10,000 ITF Women’s tournament in Antalya, Turkey early this year, where she also won the doubles title. Viktoria, who dabbles into coaching after injuries plagued her in the past, said it was a conscious decision to make a comeback as a player.

4. India cricketer Virag Mare creates Guinness world record for longest net session
Virag Mare runs a Vada Pav stall to earn his livelihood. He earns very less but his financial condition couldn’t stop his dream. His poor financial condition forced him to shift his base from Mumbai to Pune to sustain his cricketing career. Virag Mare etched his name on the Guinness Book of World Records by having the longest batting net session. Mare batted for three days and two nights to break the record for the longest individual net session.
Playing at the Mahalaxmi Lawns in Karve Nagar, Mare commenced his net session on December 22, and faced 2,447 overs (14,682 balls), in exactly 50 hours, five minutes and 51 seconds. The 24-year-old, who faced deliveries from both a bowler and a bowling machine, broke the previous record of 48 hours set by English duo Dave Newman and Richard Wells.

5. Andhra Pradesh to host 2019 National Games
Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Chairman PR Mohan has announced that the National Games in 2019 would be held in Andhra Pradesh. The Indian Olympic Association, at its meeting held in Guwahati, agreed to the proposal to host the Games made by the SAAP Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association General Secretary Purushotham and other sports officials from the State.
The IOA delegates agreed to the proposal as they have immense faith in the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The delegates at the meeting recalled the Afro-Asian Games conducted in undivided Andhra Pradesh during Naidu’s earlier tenure as Chief Minister.

6. Over 9,500 complaints pending with banking ombudsmen: RBI
The Reserve Bank of India has announced that over 9,500 complaints of deficient services by nationalised and private sector banks are pending with banking ombudsmen. The revised Banking Ombudsman scheme 2006 allows a customer to seek redress of complaints against banks relating to credit cards and house loans, among others. The number of complaints pending for resolution as on December 13, 2015 was 9,508, the RBI said in reply to an RTI query.
The number of complaints received by banking ombudsmen across the country from January 1 to December 13 this year was 87,683, the RBI said. As per the central bank’s annual report on the scheme for 2014-15, a total of 85,131 complaints were received by it during the last fiscal.

7. Dubai to host multi-event yoga initiative
Dubai is all set to host the city’s largest all-inclusive yoga initiative to help encourage people to meditate and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The new yoga initiative will also encompass a two-day mega festival of the body and mind – XYoga Dubai Festival. The festival is scheduled to take place from February 19 to 20. With the growing popularity of outdoor activities in the Gulfnation, XYoga Dubai is designed to highlight the accessibility of yoga as a lifestyle choice to help encourage people to defy their bodily limits and mental boundaries.
With sessions available for people of all ages and abilities, the festival will host yoga classes such as Vinyasa Yoga to AcroYoga as well as meditation and healthy eating workshops for complete beginners, pre-trained instructors, pregnant women, children, elderly and more.

8. Flipkart to sell cars and bikes online
Flipkart, the leading domestic online marketplace, is all set to sell cars and bikes online. It is tying up with two Bengaluru-based dealers and is offering to sell Maruti Suzuki cars and Bajaj motorcycles to customers.
Flipkart took the decision following the success of Snapdeal’s initiative in the online sale of vehicles. Snapdeal Motors was set up last month to meet the growing demand for two-wheelers, especially in tier-II and tier-III cities.
A pilot initiative has been launched by Flipkart in Bengaluru wherein it has tied up with Kalyani Motors for Maruti cars and Khivraj Motors for Bajaj two-wheelers. Snapdeal has been selling vehicles online for 10 months now that include mostly two-wheelers.

9. Indian Oil Corp tops in 2015 Fortune 500 companies in India list
State-run Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has maintained its numero uno position followed by Reliance Industries in terms of revenue for the sixth consecutive year in the list of Fortune 500 Indian companies 2015. The list, which has been compiled by global business magazine Fortune ’s Indian edition since 2010, said the total revenue of firms has grown a mere 2.7 per cent and profits fell 5.9 per cent compared with 2014.

- IOC tops the chart with an annual revenue of Rs 4,51,911 crore.
- Mukesh Ambani-led RIL’s full-year revenue is Rs 3,82,565 crore.
- Tata Motors’ revenue is Rs 2,67,025.
- State Bank of India (SBI) moved to fourth position with an annual revenue of Rs 2,57,289 crore.
- Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) is ranked fifth with an annual revenue of Rs 2,40,367 crore.

10. India may be third largest economy after 2030: UK think tank
According to a new study, India could become the world’s third largest economy after 2030 and its ascension could see France and Italy kicked out of the exclusive G8 group or its membership increased to 10 to accommodate India and Brazil. According to a report by the UK think tank Centre for Economics Business and Research (CEBR), China will overtake the US as the largest economy in the world in 2029 with the US slipping to second place and India close behind at third.
India’s projected GDP in 2030 was $10,133 billion, behind America’s $32,996 billion and China at the top with a projected GDP of $34,338 billion. However, India will become the largest economy in the Commonwealth in 2019 when its economy overtakes the British economy.

11. Shiva Keshavan wins silver at Asian Championship
Seasoned Indian luger Shiva Keshavan has won a silver medal at the Asian Championship. The race consisted of two heats closely contested by athletes. Though in the first heat Shiva was a mere 2/10th of a second behind, minor technical snags cost him the gold medal in the second heat. The first place was claimed by Japan’s Hidenari Kanayama, and third by Korea’s Dong Hyeon Kim.

12. 98th Annual Conference of the Indian Economic Association inaugurated
President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the 98th annual conference of the Indian Economic Association in Hyderabad. The three-day conference is being organized by Indian Economic Association and the Centre for Economic and Social Studies in Hyderabad.
