1. Yan Dhanda: 17-Year-Old Footballer Becomes 1st of Indian Heritage to Sign With Liverpool

Liverpool youngster Yan Dhanda has become the first player of Indian heritage to sign a professional contract with the Reds. The 17-year-old, who was born in Birmingham, joined Liverpool from West Brom in 2013 and has now signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Anfield. Dhanda has been capped at youth level by England, playing for the Under-16 and Under-17 teams – scoring once for the latter – and won the Up and Coming Player award at the 2013 Asian Football Awards.

2. Miss Spain Wins International Beauty Pageant

Miss Spain Mireia Lalaguna Royo has won the Miss World 2015 crown, beating 116 other contestants at a glittering ceremony held at the Beauty Crown Grand Theatre in Sanya, China. She was handed her crown by the reigning Miss World 2014, Rolene Strauss of South Africa, and cheered on by second and third runners-up, Miss Russia Sofia Nikitchuk and Miss Indonesia Maria Harfanti.

3. New medicine for Hepatitis C treatment launched

Two new drugs were launched for fighting Hepatitis C at an affordable price as experts from across the globe gathered in New Delhi to discuss progress in finding treatment to the dreaded Hepatitis B and C liver diseases. During a three-day conference organised by Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) and Asia Pacific Association for Study of Liver (APASL), the experts resolved to find treatment for Hepatitis-B, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has termed as a “major global health problem”.

According to WHO, an estimated 240 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B and more than 7,80,000 people die every year due to complications of Hepatitis B which includes cirrhosis and liver cancer.

4. Govt to introduce bankruptcy bill in Parliament

The government of India is all set to introduce the bankruptcy bill in Parliament, which when enacted will improve ease of doing business in India. With a view to promoting ease of doing business and spurring economic activities, a government-appointed panel had last month suggested a modern bankruptcy law to deal within 180 days the insolvency cases that may arise on account of business failures or economic downturns.

The draft legislation prepared by the panel also proposes early identification of financial distress so that steps could be taken to revive the ailing company.

5. China, Vietnam launch joint inspection of South China Sea waters

In a significant move in the ongoing dispute over the South China Sea, China and Vietnam which have overlapping claims over several islands and reefs along with four other countries today launched joint inspection of a section of the waters. A ceremony was held in south China’s Guangzhou for the launch of a China-Vietnam joint inspection of the waters outside the Beibu Gulf which is bordered by the two countries.

Chinese and Vietnamese experts will inspect the terrain and geological conditions outside the mouth of the Beibu Gulf. The inspection will be carried out by China’s Fendou No 5 ocean research vessel. The inspection area is potentially rich in resources, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

6. Jeff Williams appointed as Chief Operating Officer of Apple Inc

Apple Inc has promoted longtime executive Jeff Williams to the role of chief operating officer. Williams, who joined Apple in 1998, previously served as senior vice president of operations and oversaw development of the Apple Watch, the company’s first new product since the iPad. In charge of the iPhone maker’s supply chain, and service and support operations, he also looked after the company’s social responsibility initiatives.

The move will create greater accountability for improvements to the App Store. The move liberates Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, to focus on one of his chief responsibilities: deal-making.

7. British Novelist Peter Dickinson passed away

eter Dickinson, an award-winning British mystery writer has been died at the age of 88. His books for adults and children often crossed the boundaries separating the genres of crime, adventure, science fiction, fantasy and suspense. Mr. Dickinson, who wrote nearly 60 novels, was a late starter who did not publish his first novel until he was nearly 40. In the late 1960s, as an assistant editor at the humor magazine Punch, he had been reviewing mystery novels for several years.

8. PFRDA switches to PAN for online enrolment under NPS

Pension fund regulatory body PFRDA has started using PAN instead of Aadhaar for validation of new customers who can now be registered online under the National Pension System (NPS) scheme.

The Aadhaar-based online NPS account facility was started on a pilot basis, but following a Supreme Court judgment on usage of Aadhaar, it had to be discontinued. The Supreme Court in October lifted restrictions on usage of Aadhaar card for social welfare schemes and said implementing agencies can use Aadhaar number voluntarily.

NPS, regulated by PFRDA, has a wide spectrum of subscribers drawn from central, state, private and unorganised sectors.

According to PFRDA data, as of October 31, 2015, a total of 9,380,174 were on the subscriber list of NPS. The asset under management during the same period stood at Rs 1,02,878 crore.

9. WB Govt approves proposal for formation of 5 new districts

The West Bengal Government has approved proposal for formation of five new districts in the state. With this the total number of districts of Bengal will increase to 25. Decision in this regard was taken by state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata.

The Districts are,

  • Kalimpong
  • Sundarbans
  • Basirhat
  • Burdwan (Industrial)
  • Jhargram

10. Priyanshu wins the Amateur Golf Championship of India

Gurgaon boy Priyanshu Singh defeated Delhi’s Kshitj Naved Kaul 3 and 2 to clinch the 115th Amateur Golf Championship of India title at the Classic Golf Resort.  In the final played over 36-holes, Priyanshu, who also plays in US collegiate championship, was 1-up at the half-way stage without ever slipping behind Kshitij.  19-year-old Priyanshu, 4th highest Indian in World Amateur Golf rankings, was all praise for his young opponent.

11. US Congress approves long-delayed IMF reforms

The US Congress has approved long-stalled reforms of the International Monetary Fund that will give greater voice to emerging-market powers. Adopted in 2010 by the 188-nation IMF, the reforms also double the crisis lender’s permanent financial resources, to some $660 billion. They were part of a $1.1 trillion spending package approved by Congress, which now heads to President Barack Obama’s desk for his signature.

The reforms were expected to take effect in 2012. But with the United States holding by far the largest share of voting rights at the IMF, Congress’s refusal to approve the reforms had held up their implementation, to the consternation of IMF management and members.
