AWARDS AND HONOURS
- Kolkata gets best cities award for tackling climate change
Kolkata, along with 10 other cities from across the globe, has been honoured with the best cities of 2016 award in recognition of its inspiring and innovative programme with regard to solid waste management.
- Kolkata is the only Indian city to receive the prestigious award. It received the award during the C40 Mayors Summit held in Mexico City.
- Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project has achieved 60-80 per cent (depending on site) segregation of waste at its source, with further waste segregation occurring at transfer stations.

- Usain Bolt wins a record sixth ‘Athlete of the Year’ award
Nine-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has won the IAAF male Athlete of the Year award for a record sixth time. Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana, who broke the 10,000m world record by over 14 seconds in winning Olympic gold in Rio this summer, won the female award. Bolt will retire next year, following the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London.

- Delhi Airport world’s 22nd most connected airport
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGT) in New Delhi is the 22nd most connected airport in the world, according to air travel intelligence company OAG. Mumbai Airport has been ranked 28th, while OAG’s 2016 Megahubs Index has been topped by Chicago Airport in the United States. Meanwhile, the Atlanta and Dallas Airports, also in the US, have ranked second and third.

- UAE-based Indian wins International Children’s Peace Prize
A 16-year-old Indian environmental activist Kehkashan Basu, based in the UAE has won this year’s prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize for her fight for climate justice and combating environmental degradation. Kehkashan Basu was presented the award by Bangladesh’s Nobel peace laureate Mohammad Yunus at a glittering ceremony in The Hague.

- Former CBEC head Praveen Mahajan is new AITA President
Senior bureaucrat Praveen Mahajan has become the first woman President of the All India Tennis Association, replacing veteran administrator Anil Khanna who was forced to quit by the Sports Ministry. The AITA appointed Mahajan, a former IRS officer, after its Executive Committee unanimously chose her for the post until the election is conducted.

- Union Cabinet approves Rehabilitation Package for displaced families from PoKJ, Chhamb
The Union Cabinet has approved Central Assistance of 2000 crore rupees for 36,384 displaced families from Pakistan occupied areas of Jammu & Kashmir (POJK) and Chhamb. It was approved following an announcement of Prime Minister’s Development Package for Jammu & Kashmir 2015 announced in November, 2015
- Union Cabinet approves simplification of Visa regime
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for liberalization, simplification and rationalization of the existing visa regime in India. It has approved incremental changes in the visa policy as decided by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs with approval of Home Minister and in consultation with various stakeholders.
- Union Cabinet approves India’s negotiating position adopted at Kigali conference to Montreal Protocol
The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval to the negotiating position adopted by India at the recent 28th Meeting of Parties (MoP) to the Montreal Protocol in Kigali, Rwanda. The negotiations at Kigali meet held in October 2016 were aimed at including HFCs in the list of chemicals under the Montreal Protocol.
- Union Cabinet approves inclusion of 15 new caste in Central OBC list
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for inclusion of 15 new castes and modification in 13 other castes in the Central list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in respect of 8 states. These states are Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand. The Union Cabinet took this decision based on the recommendation of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).
- Chitra Ramkrishna Quits NSE, J Ravichandran Interim Chief
Chitra Ramkrishna quit as Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange with immediate effect presumably over differences with some board members, after having served the premier bourse for over two decades since its inception.
Senior executive J Ravichandran has been given the interim charge till the NSE board, headed by former Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla, finds a full-time replacement for Ramkrishna, who rose through the ranks to head the exchange and was part of the team that set up NSE in 1992.

- Coal India arm signs pact with SBI Capital markets
Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd (CMPDI) the consultancy arm of Coal India Ltd., has signed a memorandum of understanding with investment banker SBI Capital Markets. The agreement is aimed at tapping each other’s strengths to increase their respective market share in the rapidly growing consultancy area.

- Arunachal Pradesh and Thailand signs MoU to promote cooperation and collaboration.
For promoting cooperation and collaboration between Arunachal Pradesh and Thailand, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Surindra Rajabhat University Regional Development Strategies (SRRURDS) Foundation of Surin Province, North East of Thailand and Mahabodhi Lord Buddha College (MLBC) in Arunachal Pradesh.
