1.Cricket Australia named S Sriram & Mike Hussey as WT20 consultant
Cricket Australia (CA) has appointed former India player Sridharan Sriram and ex-Australia batsman Mike Hussey as consultants to help the national team prepare for next year’s World T20 in its quest to claim the only ICC global trophy that has eluded it. Sriram will be with the Australia team in the lead-up and early stages of the WT20, scheduled to be hosted by India in March 2016. The former India ODI batsman will join captain Aaron Finch’s men during the three-match T20 tour of South Africa before Hussey returns to the Australian set-up for the first two weeks of the competiti

2.US and Cuba near deal on restoring commercial flights
The United States and Cuba are close to a deal on restoring regularly scheduled commercial flights. The diplomatic advance would help open the way for US airlines to begin flying to Cuba within months. Officials on both sides said they had reached an understanding on key points and hoped to reach a formal deal within hours or days. Right now, American and Cuban travelers must fly on charter flights that are expensive and difficult to book, forcing travelers to buy paper tickets in Cuba or email documents and payment information back and forth with an agent in the US. Those flying often must arrive at the airport four hours in advance and pay high prices for baggage in excess of strict weight limits.

3.Cabinet gives nod to amend Constitution (SC) Order, 1950
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given a nod to approve the introduction of Constitution (SC) Order Amendment Bill, 2015 in the Parliament. The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order Amendment Bill, 2015 seeks to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, in order to modify the list of Scheduled Castes in five states, i.e., Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal.

4.Cabinet gives nod for development of Underground Coal Gasification
Cabinet has approved a policy framework for development of underground coal gasification (UCG) in coal and lignite bearing areas in India. UCG is a method of extraction of energy from coal/lignite resources which are otherwise regarded as uneconomical to work through conventional mining methods. A policy on the lines broadly similar to the existing policy for coal bed methane (CBM) development on revenue sharing basis will be adopted for offering the blocks through competitive bidding.

5.GOI gives in principle approval to Google’s Loon project
In his first visit to the country, Google’s newly-appointed chief Sundar Pichai managed to secure support for the company’s ambitious Loon project in the government. Union minister for telecom and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the government was in principle agreeable to pilots of Google’s Project Loon.
After meeting Pichai in New Delhi, Prasad said he had also proposed a partnership with state run BSNL for Project Loon. Under the project Loon, Google has proposed to provide internet connectivity in hard to access areas of the country from balloons floating at a height of 20 km using LTE or 4G technology. Prasad also said that the telecom ministry would help Google in obtaining clearances from civil aviation and the defence ministries for approvals.

6.President Pranab Mukherjee received Garwood Award
President Pranab Mukherjee has received Garwood Award for Outstanding Global Leader in Open Innovation from UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business. Prof. Solomon Darwin, Executive Director Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation presented the award to the President. The University of California, Berkeley, one of the most prestigious educational institutes in the world, has established the Garwood Award to acknowledge individuals who have embraced, supported and encouraged open innovation in a significant and impactful way.

7.MoU between India and Spain on cooperation in Port matters
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has approved signing of an MoU between India and Spain on cooperation in port matters. The agreement will be signed with a view to strengthening cooperation and to render sustained mutual assistance and advice on port matters and other related maritime matters. The MoU will be signed on a mutually convenient date and venue.

8.Lok Sabha Passes Bill On Commercial Courts
The Lok Sabha has passed the Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Bill, 2015, by a voice vote. The Bill seeks to create commercial divisions and commercial appellate divisions in high courts, and commercial courts at the district level. It was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 7 by Law and Justice Minister DV Sadananda Gowda.

9.Cabinet approved revised Model Text for Indian BIT
The central government has approved the revised model text for the Indian bilateral investment treaty (BIT). The union cabinet approved revised model BIT will be used for re-negotiation of existing BITs and negotiation of future BITs. In addition, the revised text will be used in investment chapters of comprehensive economic cooperation agreements (CECAs), comprehensive economic partnership agreements (CEPAs) and free trade agreements (FTAs). The essential features of the revised model BIT includes an “enterprise” based definition of investment and a refined investor state dispute settlement (ISDS) provision.

10.MoU in energy saving and energy efficiency among BRICS countries
The Union Cabinet has gave its ex-post facto approval to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between India and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India,China and South Africa) nations for strengthening and further developing of energy saving and energy efficiency cooperation based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit.

11.December 17 – International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is observed annually on December 17 by sex workers, their advocates, friends, families and allies. Originally conceived as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle Washington, United States (US), it has evolved into an annual international event. During the week of December 17th, sex worker communities and social justice organizations stage actions and vigils and work to raise awareness about violence that is commonly committed against sex workers.
