1. Landmark Paris climate deal to stop global warming adopted

The Paris Climate Deal to stop global warming has been adopted. The representatives of 195 nations reached a landmark accord that will commit nearly every country to lowering planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of climate change. The deal represents a historic breakthrough on an issue that has foiled decades of international efforts to address climate change. Traditionally, such pacts have required developed economies, such as the United States, to take action to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but they have exempted developing countries, such as China and India, from such action. The accord, which UN diplomats have been working toward for nine years, changes that dynamic by requiring action in some form from every country, rich or poor.

2. Gambia declares itself an ‘Islamic republic’

Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has declared the tiny West African country an Islamic republic, saying he decided this because Islam is the religion of the majority of its citizens and to break from the nation’s colonial past. It does not appear that President Yahya Jammeh’s announcement changes Gambia’s laws or the country’s constitutional status as a secular state.

“In line with the country’s religious identity and values, I proclaim Gambia as an Islamic state,” the Gambian leader said. About 90 per cent of Gambia’s 1.8 million people are Muslim. The country gained independence from Britain in 1965.

Women have been elected to municipal councils in Saudi Arabia for the first time after a ban on women taking part in elections was lifted. The vote is being seen as a landmark in the conservative kingdom. However, the councils have limited powers. Women won in many regions in the country, including Jeddah and Qatif. Saudi women still face many curbs in public life, including driving. A total of 978 women registered as candidates, alongside 5,938 men.

The disparity was attributed by female voters to bureaucratic obstacles and a lack of transport. Female candidates were also not allowed to address male voters directly during campaigning.
