1. Singapore replaces Mauritius as top source of FDI into India

Singapore has replaced Mauritius as the top source of FDI or foreign direct investment into India during the first half of the current fiscal. During April-September 2015, India has attracted $6.69 billion (₹43,096 crore) FDI from Singapore while from Mauritius, it received $3.66 billion (₹23,490 crore), according to data from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Foreign investment from Singapore has more than doubled from $2.41 billion in the year-ago period.

2. India’s forest & tree cover increased by 5, 081 Sq km: ISFR 2015

The GOI has announced that India’s forest and tree cover has increased by 5, 081 sq km. While the total forest cover of the country has increased by 3, 775 sq km, the tree cover has gone up by 1, 306 sq km. According to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2015, the total forest and tree cover is 79.42 million hectare, which is 24.16 percent of the total geographical area. The total carbon stock in the country’s forest is estimated to be 7, 044 million tones, an increase of 103 million tonnes, which is an increase of 1.48 in percentage terms over the previous assessments. The increase in the carbon stock is in line with the INDC targets. The INDC target for forestry sector envisages creation of additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3.0 billion tonnes of CO2.

3. World’s largest practical science lesson attempted at IIT

A total of 2000 students from schools across the national capital have assembled at the sprawling lawns of Indian Institute of Technology to conduct ‘world’s largest practical science lesson’. Dressed in white lab-coats, the students streamed into a giant tent pitched by the administrative block in IIT-Delhi to take a shot at the world record for the highest number of students to conduct an experiment simultaneously at the same venue. Northern Ireland is the current record-holder with 1,339 students.

4. Venezuela opposition wins parliamentary majority

Venezuela’s opposition party has claimed the majority of seats in the National Assembly in elections, the first major shift in power in the legislative branch since the late President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999. The Democratic Unity Round table (MUD) took 99 seats to just 46 for the United Social Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Tibisay Lucena, president of Consejo Nacional Electoral announced.

The victory significantly alters the political balance in this deeply divided country and augurs a power struggle between the long-marginalized opposition and the government of President Nicolás Maduro, the successor and disciple of Mr. Chávez.

5. December 07 – Armed Forces Flag Day

Armed Forces Flag Day was observed across India on 7 December 2015. The Day is celebrated all over India in order to collect the funds from people all around the country for the wellbeing of the staff of the Indian Armed Forces. On the occasion of Flag Day, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security.

The committee of Defence Minister in 1949 decided that Flag Day will be observed on 7 December every year.

6. PAHAL-Guinness world record

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presented the certificate received from Guinness Book of World Records to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The certificate is in recognition of PAHAL as the largest cash transfer programme in the world. Modi’s Pahal cash transfer scheme is providing subsidy for LPG to 14.62 crore households. The government launched the `PAHAL’ scheme in 54 districts of the country on November 15, 2014, and in remaining districts of the country on January, 2015. LPG consumers who join the PAHAL scheme get LPG cylinders at market price and receive LPG subsidy directly into their bank accounts.

7. Kaher Kazem appointed GM India head

General Motors (GM) has appointed Kaher Kazem as President and Managing Director of its India operations, effective January 1. Kazem, who is currently chief operating officer (COO) of GM India, will be replacing Arvind Saxena who has decided to retire after leading the company since early 2014. Kazem’s proven track record will enable the company to deliver to Indian consumers the great vehicles they want and the world-class customer experience they deserve.

8. Watson crowned Hero World Challenge champion

Two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson carded a six-under 66 in the final round to clinch the Hero World Challenge even as India’s Anirban Lahiri put on a disappointing show to finish last at tied 17th, at the Albany Golf Club. Watson, one of the few left-handers on the PGA Tour, registered his sixth top-five finish in last 10 worldwide starts. Watson, 37, who started the opening day carding a five-under was happy to maintain a consistent run in the PGA-sanctioned tournament hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

9. IBM signs security pact with Federal Bank for mobile app

IBM has signed a deal for an undisclosed amount with Federal Bank to provide a security layer on the Federal Bank’s mobile application. The App will also warn the users in case they attempt a transaction over an insecure network or through an infected device. The app, called FedMobile, which can be used to transfer funds, make utility bill payments and utilize services such as top-up or recharge of mobile phones and payment of school fees, was developed on IBM’s MobileFirst platform.

10. India-Russia joint naval exercise INDRA NAVY-15 begins in Visakhapatnam

The eighth edition of INDRA NAVY, a bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian and Russian Navies that began in 2003, has commenced in the Bay of Bengal on 7th December. The primary aim of this six-day exercise is to increase interoperability between the two navies and develop common understanding of procedures for maritime security operations. The scope of INDRA NAVY 15 includes wide-ranging professional interactions during the Harbour Phase and a diverse canvas of operational activities at sea across a spectrum of maritime operations, added the statement.

11. Hockey World League Final: Australia Beat Belgium to Lift Title

World champions Australia stamped their authority and defeated Belgium 2-1 to clinch the title of the second edition of Hockey World League (HWL) Final at the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Stadium on December 6. Australia, who finished fourth in the last edition of the tournament two years back, showed why they are considered as the most consistent team in world hockey as they took control of the match from the word go to dominate the world number seven Belgians.

12. Delhi & Tokyo may ink pact for India’s first Bullet Train

India and Japan are set to firm up an agreement on highspeed train services, widely referred to as ‘Bullet Trains’, during Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit next week. Abe’s Special Adviser Hiroto Izumi will be in Delhi this week for high-level talks to finalise the terms of the agreement on high-speed trains, known as Shinkansen in Japan. He will be negotiating the details with senior officials in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the railway ministry. The first train is planned between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The project will cut travelling time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from seven to two hours.

13. Nirma University awarded Excellence in Technology for Education by FICCI

Nirma University has been awarded under the category of ‘Excellence in Technology for Education Delivery’ during the FICCI Education Awards 2015, as a part of the Eleventh FICCI Higher Education Summit 2015. The event was organized at FICCI Federation House, New Delhi, by FICCI in association with the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Nirma University established in the year 2003 as a Statutory University under a special act passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly.

14. Babri Masjid anniversary: Day of ‘victory’ and ‘sorrow’

Muslims in the twin town of Ayodhya-Faizabad observed black Sunday on December 6. Incidentally, the mosque was demolished on a Sunday on December 6, 1992. Muslim groups observed ‘day of sorrow’ while Hindu outfits celebrated ‘shaurya divas’ on the 23rd anniversary of Babri mosque demolition day, which passed off peacefully amid tight security in Ayodhya, as well as in other parts of the country. Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) observed the day as ‘Yaum-e-Gham’ (day of sorrow) while VHP observed ‘shaurya divas’ (day of victory). On the occasion, Uttar Pradesh’s Additional Advocate General Zafaryab Jilani, who is also a BMAC member, said that the battle for Babri mosque is being supported and fought by Hindus.

15. Sanofi Pasteur launches injectable inactivated Polio Vaccine

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of French drug maker Sanofi, has launched ShanIPV, an injectable inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), in the Indian market. ShanIPV provides protection against three strains of the virus and will be manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur’s affiliate Shantha Biotechnics Pvt. Ltd in Hyderabad through a transfer of technology. Sanofi markets similar trivalent IPV vaccine in Indian market under the brand Imovax Polio.
