Cyclone Vardah, which made landfall at coastal Tamil Nadu , has claimed at least 10 lives in the state, Thousands of people were evacuated from coastal regions as winds reached over 100 kmph, uprooting trees and toppling cars.

The state government has announced a compensation of RS 4 lakh to the families of those killed in Vardah-related incidents.

• In the wake of the cyclone, the government and private schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur will remain closed . Chennai Airport has now become operational after the services were temporarily suspended yesterday in view of the cyclone.
• Very severe cyclonic storm ‘Vardah’, the most intense to have hit the Tamil Nadu capital flattened homes, snapped communication lines and threw into disarray rail, road and air traffic as it crossed the coast in Chennai, pounding Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram with heavy rain and squall.
• Detailing some of the measures taken by the government, Chief Minister O Pannerselvam said, “10,932 people from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts were evacuated and have been safely accommodated in 97 relief camps”.
