1. Kongthong Village Receives “Best Tourism Village 2023” Award

On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2023, Kongthong Village in the East Khasi Hills district achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the prestigious title of “Best Tourism Village 2023” at the esteemed National Tourism Awards.

These awards, presented annually by the Ministry of Tourism, recognize outstanding contributions in the field of tourism and cultural preservation.

Kongthong Village, also known as Khat-ar shnong or the Whistling Village of India, has emerged as a shining star in the tourism sector.

In an era when communication predominantly occurs through mobile phones, video chats, and text messages, the residents of Kongthong have preserved a unique tradition of communication.

They communicate with one another through whistling and employ distinct musical tunes as signals.

This tradition, which has endured for generations, has garnered global attention, making this isolated village a renowned cultural gem.

2. MS Swaminathan, father of India’s Green Revolution passes away

Dr MS Swaminathan, renowned agricultural scientist, also popularly known as the Father of Green Revolution, died at the age of 98 due to age-related health issues.

Born in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district, he was named the first World Food Prize laureate for developing and spearheading the introduction of high-yielding wheat and rice varieties into India during the 1960s when that country faced the prospect of widespread famine.

3. India ranks 40th in the Global Innovation Index 2023

India has maintained the 40th position out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index 2023 rankings published by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

India has performed well on the innovation parameter in WIPO’s annual GII for the 13th consecutive year.

The GII is a reliable tool for governments across the world to assess the innovation-led social and economic changes in their respective countries. Over the years, the GII has established itself as a policy tool for various governments and helped them to reflect upon the existing status quo.

4. World Maritime Day 2023 is observed on September 28

World Maritime Day is celebrated on the last Thursday of every September, on September 28 this year, to honor the tireless work of the international maritime industry workers.

The World Maritime Day 2023 takes place on 28 September 2023. The word ‘maritime’ comes from the Latin word ‘maritimus,’ which means ‘of the sea.’
