M.R. Poovamma and Babita Kumari conferred Arjuna Award 2015

Minister of State (I/C) for Youth affairs and Sports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal on 29th September 2015 conferred Arjuna Award 2015 to M.R. Poovamma (Athletics) and Babita Kumari (Wrestling) for their Achievements in sports. Both awardees received statuette, certificate and award money of Rs.5 lakh each.

China launches 20th satellite for its BeiDou Navigation system

China has successfully launched 20th new generation satellite for its BeiDou Navigation system, moving a step closer to build its own Global Positioning System to compete with the US-operated GPS. Launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan, the satellite was boosted by a Long March-3B carrier rocket.

India pips US, China as No. 1 foreign direct investment destination

India has emerged on top of the foreign direct investment league table, overtaking China and the United States, according to the FT data service. A ranking of the top destinations for greenfield investment (measured by estimated capital expenditure) in the first half of 2015 shows India at number one, having attracted roughly $3 billion more than China and $4 billion more than the US.

India ranks 55th in Global Competitiveness Index: WEF

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report, India has moved up 16 positions to rank 55th on a global index of the world’s most competitive economies. Globally, Switzerland has retained its top position as the world’s most competitive economy for seventh year in a row and is followed by Singapore, the US, Germany and the Netherlands in the top-five.

Rapid increase of ISIS activities in Maldives and Bangladesh

The rapid increase in activities of the ISIS in India’s neighbourhood, particularly in Maldives and Bangladesh, has risen the fear of its impact in the country. As per the report at least 250 Maldivians have left the archipelago to join ISIS and about four of them were reportedly killed while fighting in battle-fields in Iraq-Syria.

Taliban captures Northern Afghan city of Kunduz

Taliban insurgents launched a massive assault on the northern city of Kunduz, seizing a courthouse, a hospital and other government buildings, and freeing hundreds of inmates from a prison, despite a series of battles with government forces. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told The Associated Press that “Kunduz city has collapsed into the hands of the Taliban.”

India’s Gurpreet Singh wins silver medal at 2015 Asian Air Gun Championship

India’s ace shooter Gurpreet Singh has won silver medal at 2015 Asian Air Gun Championship held in New Delhi. In the finals of 10 metre Air Pistol event, Gurpreet shot a tally of 197.6 to stand second on the podium.

India, Japan and US trio meet to maintain Maritime Security

Foreign ministers of India, Japan and the United States held their first trilateral meeting in New York which highlighted the growing convergence of their respective countries in the Indo-Pacific region and collaboration on maritime security.
