1. International Yoga Day 2023 is observed on June 21

International Yoga Day 2023 is celebrated every year on June 21st to promote the numerous benefits of practicing yoga.

The chosen date coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

This day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the holistic approach to well-being that yoga offers. It highlights the importance of finding balance in our fast-paced, modern lives and encourages physical, mental, and spiritual harmony.

Yoga fosters mindfulness, stress reduction, and overall health and vitality.

The theme selected for this year’s International Day of Yoga 2023 is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,”

2. Bhavani Devi became the first Indian to win Asian Fencing Championship Medal

In a remarkable achievement, C.A. Bhavani Devi, an Olympian from Chennai, made history by securing India’s first-ever medal at the Asian fencing championships held in Wuxi, China.

Bhavani’s outstanding performance and determination earned her a well-deserved bronze medal in this prestigious event.

3. World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2023 is observed on June 19

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is observed annually on June 19th to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and its profound impact on individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder characterized by abnormal red blood cells that assume a crescent or sickle shape.

These irregularly shaped cells can cause blockages in blood vessels, leading to a range of health complications.

4. Arundhati Roy wins 45th European Essay Prize for ‘Azadi’

Writer and activist Arundhati Roy has been awarded the 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement on the occasion of the French translation of her latest essay, ‘Azadi’.

The French translation ‘Liberte, fascisme, fiction’ appeared in Gallimard, a leading French publishing group.

At a function to be held on September 11 at the European Essay Prize 2023 Round Table, in partnership with the University of Lausanne (Unil), Theatre de Vidy, Lausanne, Arundhati Roy will discuss citizenship and identity, environment and globalisation, caste and language.

5. International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice 2023 is observed on June 21

Each year on June 21, the International Day of Celebration for the Solstice is observed.

This holiday was established by the United Nations in order to raise awareness about various solstice celebrations across religions and cultures.

Many cultures and religions have their own unique way of celebrating the solstice.

6. India & Sri Lanka to accelerate digital education in Galle District

The High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay, and the Secretary of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education, M.N. Ranasinghe, exchanged diplomatic notes regarding the implementation of a digital education project in Sri Lanka’s Galle District.

This collaborative effort aims to enhance educational opportunities and foster digital literacy among underprivileged students in the region.

7. Karnataka’s Anna Bhagya Scheme

The ‘Anna Bhagya‘ scheme in Karnataka, which guarantees 10 kg of rice to Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders, has hit a roadblock due to a shortage of rice.

Despite approaching neighboring states for procurement, the Karnataka government is struggling to secure an adequate rice supply to implement the scheme.

The shortfall in rice availability poses a significant challenge to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s efforts to provide free rice to BPL families.

8. NEC Corp’s Aalok Kumar joins ADB advisory group on digital tech

Aalok Kumar, the Corporate Officer and Senior Vice President, Head of Global Smart City Business at NEC Corporation, and President and CEO of NEC Corporation India, has been appointed as a member of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) High-level Advisory Group on Digital Technology for Development, effective May 1, 2023.

9. Salman Rushdie wins prestigious German peace prize 2023

The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for 2023 has been awarded to British-American author Salman Rushdie, “for his indomitable spirit, for his affirmation of life and for enriching our world with his love of storytelling,”.

Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Ahmed Salman Rushdie’s name is best known worldwide for his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses, which caused widespread uproar in the Muslim world for its story inspired by the life of Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

It also prompted Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to declare a fatwa against the author.

10. SBI’s Swaminathan Janakiraman appointed RBI Deputy Governor

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has selected State Bank of India Managing Director Swaminathan Janakiraman for the post of Deputy Governor in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Mr. Janakiraman’s appointment was notified by the Department of Personnel and Training on Tuesday. He would have a tenure of three years from the date of joining, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
