1. Ghanaian writer and feminist Ama Ata Aidoo passes away at 81

Ama Ata Aidoo, the iconic Ghanaian writer whose classics The Dilemma of a Ghost and Changes were taught to children in West African schools for decades, has died aged 81.

The death of the playwright and poet who was famous for her feminist ideals was announced on Wednesday in a short statement by her family.

2. WMO gets Celeste Saulo as its 1st female Secretary-General

Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first female Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Saulo won a landslide vote at the UN Climate and weather agency’s Congress in Geneva. Saulo has served as the director of Argentina’s National Meteorological Service since 2014.

The leadership election of the World Meteorological Congress takes place every four years. The agency plays a key role in coordinating international meteorological work. It relies on satellites and thousands of weather stations to measure key parameters of the atmosphere, land and ocean.

3. Coromandel Express Derails and Collides with Two Other Trains in Odisha

Shalini Singh, a 20-year-old NCC cadet from Lucknow, has become the first female cadet in India to complete the advanced mountaineering course.

She scaled a 15,400-foot peak in the Dring Valley in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand as part of the course.

8. India set to remain as the UAE’s largest export destination by 2030

India is set to remain the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) largest export destination by 2030, according to a new report by Standard Chartered.

The report, titled “Future of Trade: New opportunities in high-growth corridors”, forecasts that the UAE’s exports will reach around USD 543 billion by 2030, showcasing a robust annual growth rate of 5.5 percent.

The report also highlights that trade corridors anchored in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East are expected to outpace the global trade growth rate by almost four percentage points, propelling the combined trade volume in these regions to an astounding USD 14.4 trillion, accounting for 44 percent of global trade by 2030.

9. UAE Wins Presidency of World Meteorological Organization

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has been elected as the new President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for a four-year term from 2023 to 2027.

Dr. Al Mandous was elected by the representatives of WMO’s 193 member states and territories who have convened in Geneva, Switzerland as part of the 19th session of the World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19), the supreme body of WMO being held from May 22 to June 2.
