1. HDFC Bank Surpasses SBI in CRISIL’s Corporate Banking Ranking for 2023
In 2023, HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender, achieved a significant milestone by overtaking State Bank of India (SBI) to secure the top spot in CRISIL’s Greenwich market share Leaders in Large Corporate Banking.
The report by Coalition Greenwich, a division of CRISIL, highlights the changing dynamics in India’s corporate banking landscape, with larger private and foreign banks gaining traction at the expense of smaller banks, including public sector banks.
HDFC Bank’s remarkable performance in the corporate banking sector enabled it to outshine State Bank of India (SBI) in CRISIL’s ranking.
2. International Tiger Day 2023 is observed on July 29
International Tiger Day has been observed annually on July 29th since its inception in 2010 during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit.
The main purpose of this day is to bring attention to the drastic decline in wild tiger populations, which has pushed them to the edge of extinction.

3. Parliament Passes Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023
The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed by the Parliament today after getting the nod from the Lok Sabha. The Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on 20th July, 2023 and passed after discussion on 27th July, 2023.
The historic bill was passed by the Parliament amending the Cinematograph Act after 40 years as the last significant amendments in the Cinematograph Act, 1952 were made in the year 1984.
The landmark bill aims to comprehensively curb the menace of ‘Piracy’ causing losses of Rs 20,000 Crores to the film industry, based on certain estimates.
The provisions include strict punishment of minimum 3 months imprisonment and fine of Rs. 3 lakhs which can be extended up to 3 years imprisonment and fine upto 5% of the audited gross production cost.
4. G. Kannabiran takes over as new NAAC Director
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) recently announced the appointment of Prof Ganesan Kannabiran as its new director.
The appointment took place on July 28, as per the official statement from NAAC. Prof Kannabiran brings with him a rich experience of over 30 years in the education sector, having served as a senior professor of Information Systems at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli.
Throughout his career, he has held various leadership positions, including the Dean of Research and Consultancy, and Director-in-Charge at NIT Trichy and NIT Puducherry.
5. Torneo del Centenario 2023: Indian women’s hockey team wins title
The Indian women’s hockey team wins the title of Torneo del Centernario 2023 by defeating hosts Spain 3-0 in Terrassa, Barcelona on 30th July.

Indian hockey team remained unbeaten in the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation International Tournament 2023 with the help of scores gained by Vandana Katariya, Monika and Udita.
6. Iga Swiatek wins home WTA title in Warsaw
Iga Swiatek achieved a significant achievement by securing her fourth WTA title of the year and her very first on home soil.
The Polish tennis player showcased her dominance in the final, defeating Germany’s Laura Siegemund with an incredible 6-0, 6-1 scoreline in just 68 minutes, denying her opponent any break points throughout the match.
Before reaching the final, she triumphed in a challenging semi-final match against Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer, clinching a well-deserved 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
7. Ratan Tata to get Maharashtra govt’s first ‘Udyog Ratna’ award
The Maharashtra Government will confer Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata with the first prestigious Maharashtra Udyog Ratna Award this year, state industries minister Uday Samant announced in the State Legislative Assembly.
On the lines of the Maharashtra Bhushan award, which is the state’s highest award, that is conferred to eminent people, the Maharashtra government, decided to initiate the prestigious Udyog Ratna Award from this year onward.
The first of the awards will be given to industrialist Ratan Tata.
