1. REC extends ₹ 4,785 Crore for HPCL Rajasthan Refinery’s project in Barmer
REC Limited has extended a loan of ₹ 4,785 crores to HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), for setting up a green field refinery cum petrochemical complex in Barmer district, Rajasthan.
The loan has been extended as part of a consortium arrangement for ₹ 48,625 crores, wherein the share of REC Limited is ₹ 4,785 crores.
The refinery cum complex will have a capacity of 9 Million Metric Tonnes per Annum (MMTA) and would entail a total project cost of ₹ 72,937 crores.
2. PM Modi Chairs 23rd SCO Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described terrorism as a threat to regional and global peace and called upon Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) countries to fight this menace together.
Addressing the SCO virtual summit today, Mr Modi said some countries are using cross-border terrorism as an instrument of their policies and SCO countries should not hesitate to criticize such nations.
Mr. Modi underlined that there should be no double standards on terrorism. He also said India’s concerns and expectations regarding Afghanistan are similar to those of most SCO countries.
Mr. Modi added that it is necessary that the land of Afghanistan is not used to spread instability in neighboring countries or encourage extremist ideologies.
3. 132nd Durand Cup tournament to be organized in Kolkata
The 132nd edition of the Durand Cup, India’s oldest football tournament is scheduled to commence at Kolkata from 03 August to 03 September 2023.
The tournament’s Trophy Tour, which was flagged off on June 30, 2023, marks a significant milestone in the history of the Durand Cup.
With the participation of foreign teams after a hiatus of 27 years, the upcoming edition is poised to be an extraordinary spectacle for football enthusiasts.
4. Alan Arkin, Oscar-winning actor, dies at 89
Alan Arkin, a veteran US actor known for his remarkable talent and a career that spanned over six decades died due to heart problems. Arkin, who received multiple Academy Award and Emmy nominations, left an indelible mark on both the film and television industry.
His unforgettable performances in films like “Catch-22,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and his Oscar-winning role in “Little Miss Sunshine” endeared him to audiences.
5. NADA India signs MoU with SARADO in New Delhi
National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) India and the South Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organization (SARADO) joined forces through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in anti-doping efforts.
The signing took place at the NADA India – SARADO Cooperation Meet in New Delhi, in the presence of Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, and other distinguished delegates.
6. Lt Gen M U Nair appointed as new National Cybersecurity Coordinator
The government has named Lt Gen M U Nair as the newly appointed National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC).
Lt Gen Nair, who took on the role of the 28th Signal Officer-in-Chief in July 2022, brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the areas of cyber warfare, signal intelligence, and communication and information technology.
Before assuming the position of NCSC, Lt Gen Nair held the position of commandant at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering.
7. Shreyanka Patil becomes first Indian cricketer to be part of Caribbean Premier League
Young spin bowler Shreyanka Patil has made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to be signed for the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL).
Interestingly, Patil is also the first Indian player to be offered a contract in an overseas league before making her international debut. Shreyanka Patil made a name for herself when she was selected for Royal Challenger’s Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural edition of the WPL.
In the 7 matches she played for RCB, the all-rounder took 6 wickets and scored 62 runs.
8. Rajindar Singh Dhatt Receives Points of Light Award
Rajindar Singh Dhatt, the driving force behind the “Undivided Indian Ex-Servicemen’s Association” has been honored with the prestigious Points of Light award for his exceptional service and relentless efforts to bring together British Indian war veterans.
Dhatt demonstrated his dedication to serving his country by joining the British Indian Army during the Second World War.
9. New Zealand becomes the first country to ban plastic produce bags
New Zealand has taken a momentous step towards reducing plastic waste by becoming the first country to implement a complete ban on thin plastic bags commonly used in supermarkets for fruit and vegetable purchases.
Moreover, this move will extend beyond bags, as it also includes the banning of plastic straws and silverware.
This significant move aligns with the government’s ongoing campaign against single-use plastics, which began in 2019 with the prohibition of thicker plastic shopping bags.
10. India, and Malaysia can now trade in the Indian rupee
The Ministry of External Affairs declared that trade between India and Malaysia can now be conducted using the Indian Rupee (INR) as a mode of settlement, in addition to other currencies.
This announcement follows the launch of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023 by the Ministry of Commerce the day before, which reaffirmed the government’s determination to establish the rupee as a global currency.
This move is expected to boost bilateral trade between the two countries and reduce transaction costs for businesses.
11. India’s First Indigenous 700 MW Nuclear Reactor Starts Commercial Operation in Gujarat
India’s first indigenously developed 700 MW nuclear power reactor at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat has successfully commenced commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s nuclear energy sector.
The reactor, known as KAPP-3, began operating at 90 percent of its total power capacity on June 30, 2023, as confirmed by a senior official from KAPP.
