1. Russia launches Soyuz Space craft to bring back stranded astronauts
Roscosmos recently launched an empty SOYUZ spacecraft to bring back the stranded astronauts in space. Three astronauts were stranded in space as the Soyuz MS-22 capsule started leaking coolant.
- The astronauts were to return to the earth in the capsule. Now, with the leak, the astronauts will return only by September.
- The leak was due to a micrometeoroid, possibly the size of a small rock hitting the satellite.
- Soyuz MS-22 is one of the major life-threatening impacts that happened in space missions. The consequences of space impacts have never been this serious.
2. China launches Zhongxing-26 satellite
- China recently launched the Zhongxing-26 satellite at a cost of 333 million USD. It was launched on Long March 3B rocket.
- The main objective of the satellite is to provide broadband connectivity for aviation and ship-related operations.
- The satellite was launched by the China Academy of Space Technology. The CAST is planning to make 60 more launched in 2023.
3. New World Bank President: Ajay Banga, the former Mastercard CEO
David Malpass, the former World Bank President resigned before his term was completed due to climate-related controversies.
After his resignation, US President Joe Biden recently nominated the former Master Card CEO Ajay Banga as the new World Bank President. Ajay has expertise in handling climate change-related economic issues.
He is now serving as the Vice Chairman of General Atlantic, a private firm. His business experience with the master card is more than 30 years. He is the first Indian-born nominee to serve at the World Bank.
4. Cricketer Harry Brook makes World Record with Highest Runs
- English International Cricketer Harry Brook scored the highest number of runs and breaks the huge record of Vinod Kambli.
- He made a remarkable record of 184 on Day 1 of the second test of the New Zealand vs England match. He scored 807 runs in his first 9 nine set innings.
- Brook has the capability to outshine both Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Donald Bradman by the end of this test match.
5. ‘Heath Emergency’ declared by Peru in view of Sudden Dengue Attack
- The Health Ministry in Peru country, South America has reported more than 11500 cases and 16 deaths due to the dengue outbreak.
- An emergency has been released which will continue for about 90 days. A significant increase of 72 per cent has been seen since 2022.
- The emergency was declared on February 23, 2023 (Thursday) in 13 departments operating in the country’s north, southeast and centre.
6. Award-winning Classical Dancer Kanak Rele Demise at 85
Kanak Rele, the Iron Lady who popularised ‘Mohiniyattam’ passed away in Mumbai on February 22, 2023. The cause of her demise has been cardiac arrest.
She was awarded the first Guru Gopinath National Puraskaram of the Government of Kerala. The legend Kanak Rele was also the founding director of the Nalanda Dance Research Institute.
She obtained law degrees however she chose dance as her career field. Throughout her lifetime, this Indian Dancer was honoured with various prizes and awards including Padma Shri (1989), and Padma Bhushan (2013), among others.
7. JSW chairman Sajjan Jindal bags ‘Entrepreneur of the Year 2022’ title
Sajjan Jindal, the chairman and managing director of JSW Group, was awarded as the EY Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) 2022.
The seven-member jury led by former ICICI Bank chairman K V Kamath selected Jindal as the EOY 2022 winner for his “exceptional entrepreneurial journey in scaling the global conglomerate with presence in steel, cement, infrastructure, energy, and paints to revenues of US$22 billion.
Jindal has created a track record of executing large capital-intensive, technically complex, and state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facilities on principles of cost efficiency and operational excellence.
8. Rudrankksh Patil Won gold in 10m Air Rifle at ISSF World Cup 2023
India’s Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil won the men’s 10m air rifle event at the ISSF World Cup 2023 in Cairo. He defeated Germany’s Maximilian Ullbrich by 16-8 in the gold medal match to clinch the top prize.
Rudrankksh Patil finished seventh in the qualification round with 629.3 points to make the ranking round, which he topped with 262.0 points to set up a final clash against Ulbrich.
Croatia’s Miran Maricic, who topped qualification, won the bronze medal. Divyansh Singh Panwar and Hriday Hazarika narrowly missed out on the cut for the ranking rounds and finished 11th and 12th, respectively.
9. HDFC Bank, Lulu Exchange ink deal to enhance cross-border payments between India-Gulf region
HDFC Bank and UAE-based financial services company Lulu Exchange, have partnered to strengthen cross-border payments between India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
Both sides have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enable remittances to India through HDFC’s online and mobile banking powered by LuLu Exchange.
