1. Pune 6th-most congested city among 389 cities in the world: Survey

The TomTom Traffic Index Ranking 2022 has ranked Pune as the sixth-most congested city among 389 cities across 56 countries in the world.

According to the survey, a commuter in Pune takes around 27 minutes and 20 seconds to cover 10 kilometres, which is one minute and 10 seconds more than what it used to take in 2021.

2. Rajeev Raghuvanshi named new Drug Controller General of India

The Cabinet’s Appointments Committee approved Rajeev Raghuvanshi’s appointment as the new Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for a three-year period ending on February 28, 2025.

In January, after conducting interviews, UPSC recommended Raghuvanshi for the post. DCGI heads the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), responsible for ensuring drug supply quality across the country.

3. Seattle-First US city to ban Caste Discrimination

Caste discrimination does not exist in the US by law. However, the tech sector in the country has been facing caste discrimination.

A group of Dalit female engineering from tech big giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Google passed a resolution against caste discrimination in the country.

Protests against the issue have increased in the US in recent times.

4. UBER-TATA Deal for 25000 EV

TATA is one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in India. The UBER recently signed a mega deal with TATA.

According to the deal, TATA will produce 25,000 Electric Vehicles for UBER. This means usage of Electric Vehicles is to increase in the country indirectly. UBER is a transportation company.

The usage of EVs in the country has been slow despite government efforts. Manufacturing of EVs is also slow. However, with this deal, the manufacturing and the use of EVs will increase in the country.

5. Losar Festival in Dharamshala

The Tibetan New Year is called the Losar. Tibetan Buddhists follow the Lunisolar calendar. The first day of the Luni Solar calendar is celebrated as Losar.

The Buddhists in Nepal celebrate the same festival in the name of Lhochhar and celebrated eight weeks before Tibetan Losar.

Different Indian states celebrate Losar in different ways. Recently the Tibetans in Dharamshala celebrated the festival.

6. India and Seychelles sign agreement on Maritime Cooperation

The Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region of India and the RCOC (Regional Coordination Operations Centre) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on maritime cooperation.

India has a military base on the Assumption Island of Seychelles. It was built in 1990 and was extended in 2016. The country is important for India for its geopolitical location.

7. Jnanappana Prize for 2023 went to poet V Madhusoodanan Nair

Poet V. Madhusoodanan Nair has been selected for the Jnanappana Award – 2023 instituted by the Guruvayur Devaswom. The award carries ₹50,001, a gold locket of Guruvayurappan and a citation.

It will be presented to the poet by Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu at a cultural meet to be held at Melpathur Auditorium, Guruvayur.

  • V. Madhusoodanan Nair is an Indian poet and critic of Malayalam literature, who is credited with contributions in popularizing poetry through recitation.
  • He is best known for Naranathu Bhranthan, the poem with the most editions in Malayalam literature as well as his music albums featuring recitations of his own poems and poems of other major poets.

8. World Thinking Day observed on 22nd February

Every year on February 22, the World Organization of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) observes World Thinking Day.

The goal of the day is to collect money for the 10 million girl scouts and guides who are active in more than 150 countries while also celebrating sisterhood, solidarity, and women’s empowerment.

9. Tata Group bags Title sponsorship rights for the Women’s Premier League to 2027

According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Tata Group has secured the title sponsorship rights for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for five seasons (BCCI).

From February 15, 2023, to July 31, 2027, or up until 30 days after the conclusion of the WPL Season 2027, the salt to software conglomerate will hold the title sponsorship rights.

The Tata Group is also the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It bagged the rights for Rs 600 crore for two years. Earlier, the title sponsorship rights were held by Chinese cell phone maker Vivo for two years.

10. India’s First Agri Chatbot Ama KrushAI Launched in Odisha

Governor of Odisha Prof. Ganeshi Lal launched India’s first AI Chatbot for the Agricultural sector ‘Ama KrushAI’ at the valedictory session of ‘Krushi Odisha 2023’.

Ama KrushAI chatbot will help the farmers with the best agronomic practices, inform them about government schemes, and loan products from more than 40 commercial and cooperative banks.

Ama KrushAI will run under a pilot project involving more than 10,000 farmers and will be implemented in full-fledged in the next two months. Addressing the gathering, the Governor urged farmers to take advantage of different schemes announced by the state government to promote agriculture and help the state prosper.

11. Vignesh and Visakh NR become India’s first brothers to become Grandmasters

After winning the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany and defeating German IM Ilja Schneider, Indian chess player Vignesh NR became the 80th Grandmaster of India.

The Chennai boy reached the milestone after crossing 2500 in the live ratings. Vignesh’s elder brother Visakh NR had become India’s 59th GM in 2019. Thus, Visakh and Vignesh become India’s first brothers who are Grandmasters.

12. World Scout Day 2023 celebrates on 22nd February

World Scout Day is observed annually on February 22 by millions of Boy Scouts worldwide. It honours Lord Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scout Movement, on the day of his birthday.

The day is observed by National Scout Organizations all over the world through events including fundraising campaigns, food drives, and other types of volunteer work.

13. ADB strives $25 billion for India’s infra, social and green needs

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in order to help India fulfil its most pressing development requirements, pledged up to $25 billion over the course of the next five years to support social development, climate change, and infrastructure development in India under the PM Gati Shakti project.
