SAARC Countries’ conference on disaster begins
The SAARC countries’ conference on disaster has began in New Delhi. The main objective of the conference is to chalk out and undertake joint efforts on various disaster related issues. India has planned an exercise named “South Asian Annual Disaster Management Exercise” (SAADMEx).
In the first phase, the representatives from member countries will discuss the modalities and requirements of the main exercise. The main exercise will be held from November 23-26 in the National Capital Region and will consist of three components. They are
- Table Top Exercise (TTx)
- The Field Training Exercise (FTx)
- The After Action Review (AAR).
Social Worker Binny Yanga Passes away
Binny Yanga, the social worker, has passed away due to prolonged illness at the age of 57. She is well known for her work for the welfare of weaker sections of society. She was conferred with Padma Shree in 2012 in recognition of her selfless service. She had also received the Durgabai Deshmukh Award in 2000.
GOI to invest Rs 8.5 Lakh Crore in Railways
Jayant Sinha, the Minister of State for Finance, has announced that the government if India will invest Rs 8.5 lakh crore in Indian Railways to change the face of the sector.
Permitted Levels of Trans-Fat in Edible Oils Reduced: FSSAI
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reduced permitted trans-fat content in edible fats and oils in the country from 10 to 5 per cent. This is applicable to hydrogenated vegetable oils, margarine and fat spreads and interesterified vegetable fat. Although trans fats are edible, consumption of trans fats has shown to increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
Canada’s economy falls into a recession
The Canadian economy shrank again in the second quarter, putting the country in recession for the first time since the financial crisis, with a plunge in oil prices spurring companies to chop business investment.
The last time Canada was in recession was in 2008-09, when the U.S. housing market meltdown triggered a global credit crisis.
Union Government notifies merger of FMC with SEBI
The GOI has notified the merger of commodities market regulator Forward Markets Commission (FMC) with Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). With this merging, all three national and six regional commodity exchanges will come under National capital market regulator SEBI.
Unmanned level crossings eliminated in West-Central Railway zone
The West-Central Railway Zone has become the first zone in Indian Railways to eliminate all unmanned level crossings from its system by August 31, 2015. Unmanned level crossings have been one of the reasons for increase in train accidents.
Cabinet approves reimbursement to 4 PSUs for import of pulses
The Cabinet has approved reimbursement of 113 crore rupees for incurring losses on pulses imported National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC), State Trading Corporation of India (STC) and PEC in 2006 to 2011 period.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Leaves for Turkey to Attend G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meet
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley left for Turkey to participate in the two-day Conference of G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. The two-day Meet will be held in Ankara,Turkey on 4th and 5th September, 2015. The Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of G-20 countries will be participating the International Meeting.
NCB to organise South Asian Sub-Regional Drug Focal Point Meeting in New Delhi
The Narcotics Control Bureau is organizing the Sub-Regional Drug Focal Point Meeting and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Expert Group Consultation, South Asia under the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (CPDAP).
About 40 delegates from various participating countries namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and observer countries namely USA and Myanmar are expected to participate in the meeting.
National Nutrition Week being observed in West Bengal
The West Bengal government is observing National Nutrition Week to enhance community-based initiatives in educating mothers and caregivers on nutrition issues. The state government has mobilised their state-wide network of ICDS centres and frontline functionaries to reach out to the maximum number of people at the community level. Child rights body UNICEF has also been working closely with the state.
FIFA rankings: India gain a place to 155th
The Indian football team has climbed up a place to occupy 155th spot in the latest FIFA rankings. Earlier in July, India had dropped 15 positions to 156th place after two successive defeats in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Argentina topped the ranking followed by Belgium and Germany. Colombia and five-time world champions Brazil are in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Top ranked Indians for ITF tourney
Top Indian players such as Ramkumar Ramanathan, V M Ranjeet, Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Vishnu Vardhan will be seen in action at the LMW ITF Futures tennis tournament. The five-day event haas also attracted participants from China, Philippines, Russia, Kazaksthan and Spain. This is the third time Coimbatore will be hosting the event.
Shahbaz Ahmed appointed PHF secretary
Pakistan’s former hockey World Cup winning captain Shahbaz Ahmed has been appointed as the new secretary-general of the Pakistan Hockey Federation. He is succeeding Rana Mujahid.
ICICI Lombard joins hands with CSB
ICICI Lombard General Insurance has tied up with Catholic Syrian Bank(CSB) for sale of its products through 431 branches of the bank. The 94-year-old Kerala-based bank has a strong presence in the southern and western parts of the country.
