- Sankara Narayanan Takes Charge as MD & CEO of Vijaya Bank
R A Sankara Narayanan has taken charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Vijaya Bank.
He has taken over the resigns of the bank from Kishore Sansi, who reached super annuation on August 31. He joined Bank of India as a direct recruit officer in 1983 and has headed various branches.
- Rama Moorthy takes over as MD and CEO of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank
KV Rama Moorthy has assumed charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank.
Prior to joining TMB, he was Executive Director of United Bank of India.
He succeeds HS Upendra Kamath. Rama Moorthy’s appointment is for a period of three years.
- DHFL appoints Harshil Mehta as Joint MD and CEO
DHFL, a leading housing finance company, has elevated Harshil Mehta as Joint Managing Director & CEO of the company with effect from September 1.
Prior to this elevation, Mehta was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company.
- India-Origin Vasant Narasimhan Named CEO of Novartis
Global pharma major Novartis named Vasant Narasimhan as its new chief executive officer (CEO) from 1 February 2018. He succeeds Joseph Jimenez who will step down in 2018 after eight years in the position.
Narasimhan is currently global head (drug development) and chief medical officer of the company and is also member of the executive committee of the company.
- Narayana Murthy Receives PLuS Alliance Prize
Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy and Mumbai-born scientist Veena Sahajwalla have been conferred the PLuS Alliance Prize – a prestigious honour that recognises Research Innovation, Education Innovation, Global Leadership and Global Innovation.
The Prize of USD 50,000 was awarded in two categories; Education Innovation and Research Innovation. Both winners were recognized for the development and implementation of innovative solutions to significant global issues.
- UNESCO Announced Winners of Literacy Prizes
UNESCO has announced the winners of the 2017 International Literacy Prizes, which honors excellence and innovation in the field of global literacy.
The awards will be handed out to five laureates from Canada, Colombia, Jordan, Pakistan and South Africa on the occasion of International Literacy Day,which falls on September 8.
The prizes are divided into two categories-
- The UNESCOConfucius Prize for Literacy sponsored by China, and
- The King Sejong Literacy Prizesponsored by South Korea.
This year’s Confucius Prize is given to the AdulTICoProgram from Columbia, The Citizens Foundation from Pakistan, and the FunDza project from South Africa.
The King Sejong prize is shared by the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance from Canada and the We Love Reading program from Jordan.

Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the 5th of September in India. Teacher’s Day is marked in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. Dr Radhakrishnan was India’s first vice president and second president.
He was a great scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna recipient.

- Union Health Ministry Launched Two New Contraceptives Antara and Chhaya
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched two new contraceptives, an injectable contraceptive MPA under the ‘Antara’ programme and a contraceptive pill, ‘Chhaya’, in the public health system to expand the basket of contraceptive choices to meet the emerging needs of couples.
The contraceptives, which are available for free in Medical Colleges and District Hospitals at present, have so far been launched in 10 states that includes Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha, Delhi and Goa.
The contraceptives are safe and highly effective, the ‘Antara’ injectable being effective for three months and the ‘Chayya’ pill for one week, and will help meet the changing needs of couples and help women plan and space their pregnancies.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his predecessor Akhilesh Yadav engaged in a Twitter war to claim credit for Lucknow Metro,the maiden run of which was flagged off.
Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik was the chief guest of the ceremony.
CM of Uttar Pradesh dedicated the Lucknow Metro Train Service to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India.
- NITI Aayog Unveils Strategy for National Nutrition Mission
The National Institution for Transforming India also called NITI Aayog launched the National Nutrition Strategy aimed at Kuposhan Mukt Bharat.
It intends at bringing nutrition to the center-stage of the National Development Agenda.
It enables states to make strategic choices, through decentralized planning and local innovation, with accountability for nutrition outcomes.
- Sushma Swaraj arrives in Russia for 3rd Eastern Economic Forum
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in Russian port city of Vladivostokon a three-day visit to attend the third Eastern Economic Forum which will deliberate on pressing issues relating to global trade.
She holds bilateral talks with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during which various issues relating to trade, investment, and defense cooperation.
The Eastern Economic Forum is considered as the biggest international communication platform for cooperation between businesses leaders and senior government representatives from Russia, the Pacific Region and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
- DBS Bank gets RBI Nod for Subsidiary in India
DBS Bank India, part of Singapore-based financial services group DBS Group Holdings, has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to convert its existing India franchise to a locally incorporated wholly-owned subsidiary (WOS) in India.
In its guidelines, the RBI had pointed out that the WOS model for foreign banks in India would involve local incorporation, a local board of directors, and a ring-fenced capital and assets profile that would not be affected by the impact of global events on its parent.
- Reliance General Insurance gets IRDAI nod for IPO
Reliance General Insurance has received in-principle approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for its initial public offering (IPO).
The insurance firm, which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Reliance Capital, is expected to list during the ongoing fiscal. Reliance Capital plans to dilute about 25 per cent of its holding in the insurer. According to sources, the valuation of the company is expected to be about Rs. 7,000 crore.
- NHAI awards first international project in Myanmar to Punj Lloyd-Varaha
The National Highway Authority of India has awarded its first international project in Myanmar to a joint venture of Punj Lloyd-Varaha.
This is for the upgradation of the Yagyi–Kalewa section in Myanmar to two lanes with earthern shoulder in the engineering, procurement, and construction mode.
The 120-km-long project was estimated to cost Rs. 1,177.02 crore and is to be completed within 36 months.
Punj Lloyd-Varaha’s bid was identified as the most competitive among four qualified bidders. It was at Rs. 1,177 crore or 0.0017 per cent lower than the estimated cost.
- India-Nepal joint military exercise begins with focus on counter-terrorism
India and Nepal have began their joint military exercise in the western part of the Himalayan country, focusing on counter-terrorism and forest fighting operations.
The exercise – Surya Kiran – was being participated by around 300 troops each side in Rupandehi district.
The 12th edition of Nepal-India joint military exercise will conclude on September 16.
According to the Indian Army officials, the Surya Kiran is the largest joint exercise in terms of troop participation.
- India signs 11 agreements with Myanmar
India and Myanmar have signed 11 agreements in a range of sectors, including one on maritime security cooperation, to further strengthen their multifaceted partnership.
The MoUs were signed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
India and Myanmar signed an MoU to strengthen maritime security cooperation. The two sides also signed an agreement for sharing white shipping information to improve data sharing on non-classified merchant navy ships or cargo ships.
- Cuba begins 5-month political transition
Cuba has begun a five-month political transition expected to end with Raul Castro’s departure from the presidency, capping his family’s near-total dominance of the country’s political system for nearly 60 years.
Over the rest of this month, Cubans will meet in small groups to nominate municipal representatives. Cuban officials say 12,515 block-level districts will nominate candidates for city council elections on October 22.
- Amritpal Singh becomes first Indian to be signed by Australian basketball team
Captain of Indian basketball team Amritpal Singh created history by becoming the first Indian player to be signed by an Australian Basketball team.
He will be a part of the Sydney Kings during their pre-season tour where they will also take on the game against Utah Jazz side.
Born in a village of Punjab, Singh initially played for the Pune Pesh was in the Indian Basketball League.
- India’s Ankur Mittal wins silver at ISSF World Shotgun Championship
India’s Ankur Mittal won silver medal in the men’s double trap event at the ongoing ISSF World Shotgun Championship. Sangram Dahiya ended in 20th place with 135, while Md. Asab came in 23rd with 133 hits in the qualifying round.
The trio combined for a fifth spot in the Team category with 413 points, where Italy won Gold with 418.
In the junior category, 17-year-old Ahvar Rizvi also won a silver medal in the same event.
- Arunachal Pradesh Health Minister Passes Away
Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Jomde Kena died at a private hospital in Guwahati after a prolonged illness.
52-year-old Kena, a resident of. Gensi village in Lower Siang district was undergoing treatment at Guwahati for the past one month.
