  1. Tata Steel appoints TV Narendran as global CEO and MD

Tata Steel Ltd has promoted T. V. Narendran as chief executive officer and managing director globally.

Narendran, 52, a company veteran who joined the Tata ranks in 1988, was serving as managing director (India and South East Asia) for the past four years.

  1. Vikram Singh appointed Private Secretary to President

Railway officer Vikram Singh was appointed Private Secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind. Singh is a 1997 batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment to the post for a period of two years, an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.

  1. Karnataka gets its first woman police chief

Neelmani N. Raju is Karnataka’s first woman Director General and Inspector General of Police. She will take over from Rupak Kumar Dutta, who is retiring from service.

The state government issued the orders, putting to end speculation on who the next DG&IGP would be. Three IPS officials were in the race for the post, including Ms. Raju, DGP of the Criminal Investigation Department H.C. Kishore Chandra and DGP of Anti Corruption Bureau M.N. Reddi.

  1. Birendra Prasad Baishya re-elected as President of IWLF

Birendra Prasad Baishya has been re-elected president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) in the Annual General Body Meeting.

The newly formed Executive Committee of IWLF comprises seven vice-presidents, while Sahdev Yadav became the secretary general.

  1. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale launches Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana in Mumbai

Union Minister for state for social justice and empowerment, Ramdas Athawale launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana in Mumbai.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana has been launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an objective of making quality medicines available at affordable prices to all, particularly to the poor and underprivileged, through exclusive outlets.

Jan Aushadhi Medical store is set up with an aim to reduce out of pocket expenses in healthcare.

  1. India makes it to Top 100 in ‘ease of doing business’

India jumped up 30 notches into the top 100 rankings on the World Bank’s ‘ease of doing business’ index, thanks to major improvements in indicators such as resolving insolvency, paying taxes, protecting minority investors and getting credit.

The significant jump this year is a result of the Indian government’s consistent efforts over the past few years and India’s endeavour to strengthen its position as a preferred place to do business.

India topped the list of seven countries, accounting for 64 per cent of the 10.4 million new tuberculosis (TB) cases worldwide in 2016, according to a new report by the World Health Organisation.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated the 31st of October as World Cities Day.  The general theme of World Cities Day is Better City, Better Life, while each year a different sub-theme is selected, to either promote successes of urbanization, or address specific challenges resulting from urbanization.

This year, the United Nations has selected the theme Innovative Governance, Open Cities to highlight the important role of urbanization as a source of global development and social inclusion.

National Unity day (also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is celebrated every year on 31st of October by the people all through India.

It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who really unified the country. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014 with the aim of celebrating this event every year on 31st October.

The aim of introducing this event is to pay tribute to the great man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary by remembering his extraordinary works for the country. He really worked hard in keeping India united.

  1. SBI-World Bank sanction Rs 2,317-cr for 575 mw rooftop solar projects

State Bank of India has announced sanction of credit facilities amounting to ₹2,317 crore to corporates for financing Grid Connected Rooftop Solar projects under an SBI-World Bank programme.

This funding will create solar power capacity aggregating 575 MW. India’s largest bank sanctioned loans to JSW Energy, Hinduja Renewables, Tata Renewable Energy, Adani Group, Azure Power, Cleantech Solar and Hero Solar Energy.

  1. HDFC Bank opens SmartUp Zones in 9 branches in Bengaluru

HDFC Bank has opened nine SmartUp Zones in Bengaluru. A SmartUp Zone is an exclusive area inside the branch dedicated to start-ups. In the first phase, SmartUp Zones have been launched in nine branches in the city, catering to all the start-ups located in Karnataka.

The new SmartUp Zones were inaugurated by Vidhya Shankar, Executive Director, Grant Thornton India and Arun Mediratta, Branch Banking Head, HDFC Bank.

  1. ISRO to launch 28 commercial satellites along with CartoSat-2

The Indian Space Research Organisation will launch 28 commercial satellites along with CartoSat-2 satellite in the second half of December.

International Seminar on Indian Space Programme: Trends and Opportunities for Industry’, supported by Ficci and ISRO’s commercial arm Antrix Corporation, ISRO Chairman AS Kiran Kumar said that out of the 28 commercial satellites, 25 are nano and three are micro.

  1. SpaceX successfully launches 16th Falcon 9 rocket in 2017

SpaceX just successfully launched its 16th Falcon 9 rocket this year, for client KT SAT, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission is to deliver the company’s Koreasat-5A satellite, which will provide broadband communications services to KT SAT’s customers.

As part of the launch, SpaceX also successfully recovered its Falcon 9 first stage, which landed aboard the drone spaceship ‘Of Course I Still Love You,’ floating in the Atlantic Ocean.

India and Tunisia have agreed to jointly combat terrorism and extremism while ramping up cooperation in the field of security.

A review of bilateral ties was undertaken as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the 12th India- Tunisia Joint Commission Meeting with her Tunisian counterpart Khemaies Jhinaoui.

Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat, who won India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, has won a gold medal at the All India Police Championship 2017.

The 28-year-old Indian wrestler, whose life has been portrayed in the movie Dangal.

  1. Sidhu wins air pistol gold at Commonwealth Shooting C’ships

Ace Indian shooter Heena Sidhu clinched a gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships, Brisbane.

Sidhu and Jitu Rai combined to give India their first gold medal of the ISSF World Cup Final, clinching the top honours in the 10m air pistol mixed team event on the opening day of competitions.

  1. South Korean veteran actor Kim Joo-hyuk passed away

Popular South Korean actor Kim Joo-hyuk died in a car crash at the age of 45 in Seoul.

Joo-hyuk film credits include ‘Yourself and Yours’ (2016), ‘The Servant’ (2010) and ‘My Wife Got Married’ (2008), along with TV series such as ‘Argon, Hur Jun: The Original Story’, ‘Lovers in Prague’ and variety show ‘2 Days & 1 Night’, on which he was an original cast member.

  1. Writer and journalist Khadri Achyuthan dies at 71

Khadri Achyuthan (71) is no more but his yeoman contribution to the development of Kannada television news and the coinage of new Kannada words will always be remembered.

He was at the helm of TV news production during a tumultuous period that witnessed the advent of Kannada news and saw many changes in broadcasting in the state.
