  1. Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan to get Lata Mangeshkar Award

Noted music composers Usha Khanna, Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik and playback singers Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan have been selected for the Madhya Pradesh governments prestigious National Lata Mangeshkar Award.

The artistes will be honoured for their contribution in the field of music composition and singing.

  1. Sibi George appointed as the Ambassador of India to Switzerland

Sibi George has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Switzerland. He will replace Smita Purushottam. George is presently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Aftairs.

George, a 1993 batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, has also served as deputy chief of mission of Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia.

  1. Malaysia Airlines names Izham Ismail as new CEO

Malaysia Airlines Berhad has appointed Izham Ismail as group chief executive officer designate, replacing Peter Bellew, who quit to join Ryanair after a little more than a year in the job.

Izham, who has served as chief operating officer since last November, will become the airline’s third CEO in two years. Bellew’s predecessor, Christoph Mueller, also quit before the end of his contract.

  1. Govt to set up portal for NRIs to track adoption requests

The central adoption body CARA is planning to set up a portal to help prospective parents from outside India track the status of their applications instead of relying solely on their country’s authorised agency.

The move will help non-resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) as well as foreign nationals who apply for inter-country adoption.

  1. Kandla Port gets green nod for Rs 1,176-cr smart industrial port city

State-owned Kandla Port Trust has received environment clearance for setting up a Rs 1,176-crore smart industrial port city in Kutch, Gujarat.

The proposal is to develop a smart industrial port city at two separate sites in Gandhidham which would house about 35,700 residential flats, schools and parks. The project is expected to generate jobs for more than 60,000 people in the region.

  1. Centre asks states to name toilets as ‘izzat ghar’ in rural areas

The Centre has written to each state government to name toilets built in rural households as “izzat ghar” or “house of dignity” or any other appropriate equivalent in the local language.

Noting that the toilets in rural households in many parts of Uttar Pradesh are being named izzat ghar, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation wrote to state government’s principal secretaries, who are in charge of rural sanitation, to consider doing the same in their states, too.

  1. WHO removes Zimbabwe President as Goodwill Ambassador

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been removed as a goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organisation following outrage among Western donors and rights groups at the appointment.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus named Mr Mugabe to the largely ceremonial post at a high-level WHO meeting on chronic diseases, attended by both men, in Uruguay.

  1. NASA discovers Mars has a twisted magnetic ‘tail’

Mars has an invisible magnetic “tail” that is twisted by interaction with the solar wind, according to new research using data from NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft.

NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) spacecraft is in orbit around Mars gathering data on how the Red Planet lost much of its atmosphere and water, transforming from a world that could have supported life billions of years ago into a cold and inhospitable place.

The process that creates the twisted tail could also allow some of Mars’ already thin atmosphere to escape to space, according to the research team.

  1. India defeat Malaysia to win their 3rd Hockey Asia Cup title

Goals from Ramandeep Singh and Lalit Upadhyay helped India beat Malaysia in the final of Asia Cup hockey in Dhaka.

The Indian men’s hockey team clinched their 3rd Asia Cup title and first since 2007. This was Malaysia’s first final at the Asia Cup. Earlier in the Super 4 stage, India had produced a brilliant performance to beat Malaysia 6-2.

  1. Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar wins 8th Asian Tour title

Gaganjeet Bhullar held his nerve to complete a wire-to-wire victory and lift his eighth Asian Tour title at the Macao Open. The 29-year-old fired rounds of 64, 65, 74 and 68 for an aggregate score of 13-under 271, lifting his first Asian Tour trophy of the year.

Bhullar’s fellow Indian Ajeetesh Sandhu and Filipino Angelo Que shared second place at par-71 Macau Golf and Country Club, while Taiwan’s Hung Chien-Yao was alone in fourth.

  1. India’s Srikanth wins his 3rd Superseries title of 2017

Kidambi Srikanth clinched his third Super Series Premier title with a dominating straight-game victory over Korean veteran Lee Hyun II in a lopsided final of the USD 750,000 Denmark Open.
