  1. Manushi Chhillar wins Miss World for India after 17 years

India’s Manushi Chhillar was  crowned as Miss World 2017 at a grand event held in Sanya in China. The 20-year-old medical student from Haryana had won Femina Miss India World 2017 in May this year.

Manushi had made it to the top 5 along with contestants from England, France, Kenya and Mexico. The first and the second runners-up were Miss England Stephanie Hill and Miss Mexico Andrea Me

  1. Lankan author Anuk Arudpragasam wins DSC Prize for 2017

Sri Lankan author Anuk Arudpragasam is the winner of this year’s DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for his book “The Story of a Brief Marriage”, beating the likes of Aravind Adiga, Karan Mahajan and Anjali Joseph.

The USD 25,000 DSC Prize was awarded to the winner along with a trophy by Bangladesh Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on the concluding day of the Dhaka Literary Festival (DLF).

  1. Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan to get lifetime achievement award at IFFI

Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
The festival, to be held in Goa from November 20 to 28, will also screen three films produced by the 57-year-old filmmaker.

  1. AVPS Chakravarthi Appointed World Packaging Organisation Ambassador

Chakravarthi AVPS, Managing Director, Ecobliss India, has been appointed global ambassador of the World Packaging Organisation.

He is the first Asian to be appointed ambassador. The honorary appointment was made in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the 99th board meeting of WPO.

  1. Delhi govt to form ‘Mahila Suraksha Dals’

Deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia has the Delhi government would form “Mahila Suraksha Dals” (women protection groups) to curb crimes against women in the national capital.

This will make civil defence volunteers available to them and pilot projects will be run at two-three places first.

  1. RBI withdraws 10,000 crore open market bond sale

The Reserve Bank of India  had scrapped its plan to sell government securities worth Rs10,000 crore through open market operations.

In view of the recent market developments and based on a fresh review of the current and evolving liquidity conditions, it has been decided to withdraw the open market sale operations scheduled for November 23, 2017.

  1. Yes Bank Ties up with Centre Denmark India for Fintech Collaboration

YES Bank, which runs a startup accelerator programme called Yes Fintech, is looking at exclusive global exchange programme partnerships to help Indian start-ups gain access to developed markets in terms of business and investments.

Towards this end, the bank has already tied up with MaGIC (Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Center), a Malaysian government initiative. It is also looking for similar partnerships with the US, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, the UK and Israel over the next few years.

  1. Sarajevo Haggadah listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register

Sarajevo Haggadah, the 14th- century richly illuminated Hebrew manuscript, which was brought to Sarajevo through the efforts of Jews fleeing persecution in Spain, has been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

Haggadah in Hebrew means a story, handwritten on parchment, and it is read by family members on the occasion of the Jewish feast of Passover. It has been kept at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1894.

  1. NASA launches next-generation weather satellite

NASA has launched a next- generation satellite into space designed to monitor weather around the world and help improve forecasts.

The satellite, called the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1), is a joint venture between the US space agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which provides weather reports and forecasts.

The satellite was launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

  1. Britain appoints the first female Black Rod in 650 years

Britain’s upper parliamentary chamber, the House of Lords, has appointed a woman to the role of ‘Black Rod’ for the first time in the office’s 650-year history.

Sarah Clarke, currently responsible for the organisation of the annual Wimbledon tennis championships, will be known as The Lady Usher of the Black Rod.

  1. Geeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik win national golds in wrestling

Two-time Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar took less than three minutes to bag a gold medal in men’s 74kg freestyle competition of the National Wrestling championship in Indore.

India’s lone woman Olympic medal winning wrestler Sakshi Malik and popular ‘Dangal girl’ Geeta Phogat also bagged a gold medal each in their respective weight categories of women’s wrestling on the second day of the marquee domestic event.

Phogat sisters Vinesh and Ritu won in their respective weight categories on the opening day of the National Wrestling Championship in Indore on 16 November

While Commonwealth Games gold medallist Vinesh, representing Railways, finished on the top of the podium after getting the better of Haryana’s Manisha in the women’s 55-kg category, youngster Ritu won the women’s 50-kg event after beating Nirmala.

Yuki Bhambri clinched his first title of the 2017 season on the ATP Challenger Tour following a come-from-behind win over compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan in the final of the KPIT-MSLTA Challenger in Pune.

  1. Sharath-Sathiyan duo win bronze in Sweden Open

India s star doubles pair A Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan put up a stellar show in the Seamaster 2017 World Tour Swedish Open to seize a bronze medal.

They upset the top seeds of the tournament, Quadri Aruna from Nigeria and Diogo Carvalho from Portugal, 3-1 to make it to the semifinals in style. But they lost 1-3 (10-12, 3-11, 11-7, 4-11) to Hong Kong s Kwan Kit Ho and Chun Ting Wong to miss out on the chance to make the title round.

  1. AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young dies aged 64

AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young has died aged 64.  Best known for their hit song Highway to Hell, AC/DC formed in 1973 and went on to produce 17 studio albums, selling more than 200 million records.
