  1. Infosys Prize 2017 winners announced

A neuroscientist using computers to map the human brain and a chemist trying to make DNA machines to study living cells are among the winners of the Infosys Prize 2017 announced across six fields.

The Infosys Science Foundation’s prize was announced in the fields of Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.

The winners are: Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhya, Ananya Jahanara Kabir, Upinder Singh Bhalla, Ritabrata Munshi, Yamuna Krishnan, Lawrence Liang.

  1. Zaira presented Exceptional Achievement award by Prez Kovind

President of India Ram Nath Kovind on November 14 bestowed Dangal and Secret Superstar child actor Zaira Wasim with the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement 2017 in the field of Performing Arts on the occasion of Children’s Day.

Zaira Wasim made her debut in Bollywood as a child actor in Aamir Khan’s wrestling biopic drama Dangal (2016) wherein she was seen portraying the role of Geeta Phogat in childhood.

RBI Governor Urjit Patel was appointed to the Financial Stability Institute Advisory Board or the Bank of International Settlement (BIS), a global financial organisation owned by major central banks from across the world.

The Financial Stability Institute (FSI) of the BIS assists financial sector authorities worldwide in strengthening their financial systems.

  1. Vijay Prasad Dimri Appointed President of 36th Intl Geological Congress

Scientist Vijay Prasad Dimri has been appointed as the president of the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC), a global platform for advancement of earth science, to be held in 2020.

India, along with its co-host neighbouring countries — Bangladesh, Nepal, Srilanka and Pakistan — won the bid to host the 36th IGC in the National Capital Region from March 2 -8, 2020, according to the website of 36th IGC.

The wealth of India’s Ambanis soared by $19bn last year, according to a ranking by Forbes magazine, making them Asia’s richest family with a total net worth of almost $45bn.

The Ambanis have prospered over the past 12 months thanks largely to a surge in the shares of Reliance Industries, the company owned by Mukesh Ambani, who temporarily became Asia’s richest man earlier this month.

  1. Jharkhand celebrates its 17th Statehood Day

Jharkhand was celebrated its 17th Statehood day on November 15. Every year, the state celebrates its foundation day on the occasion of the birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda, who was an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.

Birsa Munda, also known as Bhagwan Birsa, was born on November 15, 1875 in Ulihatu region of Jharkhand.

  1. Karnataka Bank launches CASA campaign

Karnataka Bank has launched a special campaign for opening current account and savings accounts (CASA). The campaign will remain in force for a period of three-and-a-half months from November 15 to February 28. The bank intends to open more than 4.15 lakh accounts under CASA during the campaign.

The United Nations declared November 14 as an official World Diabetes Day (WDD). The day also marks the birth anniversary of scientist and Nobel laureate Frederick Banting who is the co-discoverer of insulin.

  1. Apple to help Indian government develop anti-spam app

Apple Inc has agreed to give limited help to the Indian government to develop an anti-spam mobile application for its iOS platform, after refusing to do so based on privacy concerns.

The government app was launched on Google’s Android platform last year, but an industry source with direct knowledge of the matter said Apple pushed back on requests for an iOS version due to concerns that a government app with access to call and text logs could compromise its customers’ privacy.

  1. Padma Bhushan Hindi poet Kunwar Narayan dead at 90

Eminent Hindi poet and Jnanpith awardee Kunwar Narayan passed away. He was 90. The Hindi poet was honoured with Jnanpith Award in 2005 and Padma Bhushan in 2009.

He was also bestowed the Premchand Award, Kabir Samman, Vyaas Samman, Shalaka Samman, Tulsi Award, Hindustani Akademi Award for “Atmajayee” and Sahitya Akademi Award for “Koi Doosra Naheen” among others.

  1. Former SC judge Justice V Khalid passes away

Former Supreme Court judge and eminent jurist Justice V Khalid passed away. He was 95.

Justice Khalid served as the judge of the Supreme Court from June 25, 1984 till his retirement on June 30, 1987.
