  1. Mohan Joshi honoured with Vishnudas Bhave award

Veteran actor Mohan Joshi was felicitated with the prestigious Vishnudas Bhave award for his contribution to theatre.

Joshi was honoured with the award at a ceremony held in this western Maharashtra town on the eve of Marathi Rangbhumi Din.

Veteran actor Jayant Sawarkar presented the award to Joshi, who has acted in a number of Marathi and Hindi films, besides in plays.

  1. Srirangam temple wins UNESCO award

The massive renovation and restoration effort at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam has won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit 2017 for cultural heritage conservation.

The temple bagged one of the four Awards of Merit from a jury comprising nine international conservation experts, which considered conservation projects from 10 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

  1. Revenue Secy Hasmukh Adhia appointed new Finance Secretary

Hasmukh Adhia, an old hand in the Finance Ministry, who drove two of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s biggest initiatives, Demonetisation and the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), has been designated as the new Finance Secretary.

With Adhia’s appointment, the Budget team for 2018-19 is now complete. A 1981-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service from the Gujarat cadre, Adhia served as Principal Secretary to Modi from 2003-06, when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, and, according to Reuters, led a small team that oversaw the demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, taking out 86 per cent of the currency in circulation.

The aroma of Hyderabad’s trademark cuisine biryani, baghare baingan and seviyan -may ‘waft’ through the air the next time you receive a mail from the India Post.

These three signature dishes of Hyderabad have made their way into India postage, with the Department of Post issuing stamps with photos of these dishes.

  1. Railway launches new gold standard trains as part of Swarn Project

As part of Railways’ Swarn project, Indian Railways will showcase its first train with enhanced features and upgraded utilities.

New Delhi-Kathgodam Shatabdi Express will bear a new look. The Swarn project aims to upgrade premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi.

At a cost of Rs 50 Lakh each, the trains will provide additional security with more CCTV cameras and more RPF personnel on board. Punctuality has also been identified as a focus area for these trains.

  1. Nobel Memorial Wall inaugurated at Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk Metro station

The aim of exhibiting this wall is to spread further awareness about all the Nobel Laureates from India and their contribution to the society.

The wall will be on display from 1st November to 7th November 2017 at Rajiv Chowk Metro station of the Delhi Metro.

The one-of-its kind Wall exhibits paintings by the students from top Fine Art Colleges in Delhi NCR.

The portraits of Rabindranath Tagore, CV Raman, Hargobind Khorana, Mother Teresa, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Amartya Sen, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Kailash Satyarthi were selected by way of a painting competition conducted by the Embassy.

  1. Indian Railways launches main arch on world’s highest bridge on Chenab

The Indian Railways has launched the main arch of the world’s highest bridge on the River Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district which will provide direct connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.

The iconic bridge will soar 359 metres above the bed of the River Chenab and will be 30 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.

  1. HDFC Bank makes RTGS, NEFT online transactions free from Nov 1

Private lender HDFC Bank has made online transactions through RTGS and NEFT free of cost from November 1, with an aim to promote a digital economy.

On the other hand, various charges for cheque-related transactions as well as request for additional leaves will get costly from early next month for non-managed savings and salary accounts.

  1. Thailand to introduce biometric checks for SIM cards

Thailand will introduce biometric checks nationwide for mobile telephone users to register their SIM cards from Dec. 15, the telecoms regulator, in a bid to stamp out fraudulent electronic transactions.

The new rules require users to either have their fingerprints verified or their faces scanned. The regulator first launched the system in June in Thailand’s troubled south where a separatist insurgency has persisted for more than a decade, killing more than 6,500 people since 2004.

  1. Anjum Moudgil wins bronze at Commonwealth Shooting Championships

Anjum Moudgil won her second medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Brisbane, winning a bronze in the women’s 50m Rifle Prone.

She shot a total of 616.7 to finish behind silver medalist Seonaid Mcintosh (619.9) of Scotland. The gold went to Seonaid’s countrywoman Jennifer Mcintosh who shot a Commonwealth record score of 620.7.

  1. Veteran Malayalam Actor Vettoor Purushan passed away

Veteran Malayalam actor Vettoor Purushan, who had essayed roles in 70 odd films, passed away following old age illness.

‘Athbhutha Dweep’, ‘Sooryavanam’, ‘Itha Innu Muthal’ were among the films in which he had donned various characters.
