1. CARAT- 2019: US-Bangladesh Navy exercise
The biggest US- Bangladesh Navy exercise dubbed as ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) – 2019’ is being held in Chattogram (or Chittagong City) in Bangladesh. The CARAT is a yearly exercise conducted between the navies of Bangladesh and United States in the Bay of Bengal. The first edition of exercise was held in 2011.
2. Govt. launches ATITHI app for improved customs clearance
Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman launched ‘ATITHI’ app, an IT initiative to facilitate electronic filing of customs baggage and currency declarations by arriving international passengers.
About ATITHI app
ATITHI app is an easy to use mobile application for international travelers to file Customs declaration in advance. Passengers can use this app to file declaration of dutiable items as well as currency with Indian Customs even before boarding the flight to India.
3. Aditya Mishra appointed chairman of Land Ports Authority of India
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Aditya Mishra as the chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI). He was appointed on the recommendations of a search-cum-selection panel.
Aditya Mishra is a 1989 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He is presently posted as ADG, CBCID, Uttar Pradesh Police. He has been appointed as LPAI chairman for a period of five years from the date of assumption of the charge.
4. November 5: World Tsunami Awareness Day
On November 5th, every year the World Tsunami Day is marked by the United Nations. UN designated the day in 2015. The day will promote Target (d) of the Sendai Seven Campaign that focuses in reducing disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services.
5. Sri Lanka hosts biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference
The biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference is being held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 4-7 November 2019. India will be represented at the conference by Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Theme for 2019 CLM Conference is- ‘Equal Access to Justice and the Rule of Law’.
Law Ministers and Attorney Generals from Commonwealth countries will be participating in the four-day conference. The conference will be chaired by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms, Thalatha Atukorala.
6. Trump invites Xi Jinping to sign phase one of a bilateral trade deal
The US President Donald Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to sign phase one of a bilateral trade deal when it is agreed upon. The trade talks between China and the US began in November 2018. The talks did not yield desired results even after many rounds of negotiations in both China and the US.
7. The 3rd edition of women scientists conclave to be organized at IISF
The 5th India International Science Festival (IISF) is being held in Kolkata from 5th to 8th November 2019. The third edition of women scientists’ and Entrepreneurs’ conclave will be organized at the India International Science Festival (IISF) at Kolkata on 7-8 November 2019.
Aim:
The objective of the conclave aims to provide a platform for young women scientists and entrepreneurs to interact with the women leaders in science and technology. The move is to acknowledge the contribution of women in catalyzing sustainable growth.
8. Centre, IBM to launch the Skills Build platform
Centre is to launch the Skills Build platform in collaboration with IBM. It was announced by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), which functions under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
Aim:
This initiative by the Centre is aimed to help the youth to scale themselves as per the changing market trends. The government is planning to use technology effectively to benefit the public and to bring innovation in welfare schemes.
9. Assam pacts with AFD to restore its forest
Assam State government signed an agreement worth 50 million euros (Rs.400 crore) with the French Development Agency (AFD). The agreement aims to help restore the state’s forests and preserve its biodiversity. The project reaffirmed the commitment of the two countries towards the restoration and preservation of rich and diverse natural ecosystems. The budget allocated for the second phase by the state for the project is Rs.500 crore.
10. Rajnath Singh to co-chair India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation
Defence minister Rajnath Singh will co-chair the 19th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation starting in Moscow.
During his visit, Mr Singh is expected to hold discussions with Defence Minister of Russian Federation General Sergei Shoigu. He is also scheduled to inaugurate, along with Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov, India-Russia Defence Industry Cooperation Conference.
11. International Boarding School Fair to be held in New Delhi on November 6
The event will have representatives from over 25 international boarding schools across the US, UK and Canada.
US-based global boarding school admissions marketing firm Linden Educational Services in collaboration with The Red Pen, an education consulting company are hosting an International Boarding School Fair in New Delhi, on November 6.
12. Rafael Nadal secures No 1 spot for eighth time in his career
Rafael Nadal is back to the world No. 1 for the eighth time in his career in the ATP rankings released. The Spaniard goes up one place to overtake Novak Djokovic even though the Serb sealed his fifth Paris Masters title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
13. Lakshya Sen wins SaarLorLux Open badminton tournament in Germany
India’s Lakshya Sen has won the SaarLorLux Open badminton tournament at Saarbrücken in Germany. He defeated Sen Weng Hong Yang of China in an exciting final.
World number 51 Lakshya took 59 minutes to overcome Weng in the summit clash. The 18-year-old from Uttarakhand had entered the final beating Kiran George in an all-Indian semifinal.
