- India becomes world’s third largest aviation market
The central government has said that India has emerged as the third largest aviation market in the world with a passenger traffic of over 10 crore reported for 2016-17.
This was stated by minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha at a media event on the achievements of the ministry of civil aviation on the completion of three years of the NDA government.
Sinha said that government’s key scheme in the sector — regional connectivity scheme (RCS-UDAN) — will allow India to have 200 plus airports in the next 10-15 years.
- Delhi-Gwalior-Indore-Mumbai flight to be launched under UDAN
Air India’s regional arm Alliance Air will launch a flight on Delhi-Gwalior-Indore-Mumbai route, which will be its second venture under the government’s UDAN scheme to make flying affordable.
The airline will operate ATR 72-600 aircraft, a 70-seater all-economy class aircraft, on this route.
The subsidised fare on the Gwalior-Delhi leg of the journey will be Rs 1,830, for Gwalior-Indore it will be Rs 2,500 and for Indore-Gwalior it will be Rs 2,500.
- India ranks 120th among 131 nations in women workforce
World Bank said the country had one of the lowest female participation in the workforce , ranking 120th among 131 countries for which data was available. While overall job creation has been limited, most of the new ones have been grabbed by men given the social norms.
World Bank, said that while a larger number of younger women in India was opting to study in schools, many were dropping out of the workforce due to lack of job opportunities and others due to rising income levels.
- Modi becomes 1st Indian PM to visit Spain in 30 years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Spain on the second leg of his six-day, four-nation tour of Europe.
This will be the first Indian prime ministerial visit to Spain in nearly 30 years after the visit of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.
Earlier in the day, India and Germany held the fourth round of the biannual Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) in Germany, with a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

India and Germany have inked twelve memoranda of understanding and agreements following bilateral delegation-level talks presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The agreements inked included nine joint declarations of intent (JDIs) and three memoranda of understanding.

The US military has successfully carried out its first-ever missile defense test involving a simulated attack by an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a major milestone for a program meant to defend against a mounting North Korean threat.
The US military fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)-type weapon from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It then fired a missile to intercept it from Vandenberg air force base in California.

It was the first time since 1987 that the G7 summit held in Italy was not hosted by Silvio Berlusconi, former PM of Italy. The Group of 7 (G7) is a group consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union is also represented within the G7. - First Japanese to report Hiroshima bombing dies at 86
Yoshie Oka, the first person to raise the alarm outside Hiroshima that the Japanese city had been hit by an atomic bomb, has died aged 86.
Oka was 14 years old on Aug 6, 1945 and working in Hiroshima as a communications operator at an underground command centre of the Imperial Japanese Army.
