N Kumar, TNAU V-C, conferred with ‘Lifetime Recognition Award’ by the Confederation of Horticulture Association of India. Lifetime Recognition Award by the Confederation of Horticulture Association of India was given to Professor N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
The award has been conferred for his outstanding contribution in the field of horticulture and academic leadership focused on human resource development in agriculture at the International Conference on Innovative horticulture at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, according to a varsity release.
2. May 28 observed as World Hunger Day
May 28 observed as World Hunger Day. World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.

The theme for World Hunger Day 2019 is Sustainability.
Aim:
The main aim is to raise awareness of chronic hunger and celebrate the achievements of millions of people who are already taking actions to end their own hunger.

4. Chelsea clinched the UEFA Europa League 2019 Cup

It gave Italian manager Maurizio Sarri a major trophy in his first season in charge and Chelsea a first European title since the 2013 Europa League. The triumph in Baku means Chelsea have won three European titles in seven years, with the Champions League triumph in 2012 followed by their first Europa League victory in 2013.

Mumbai-based Writer Annie Zaidi was announced as the 2019 winner of the $100,000 Nine Dots Prize, an award for creative thinking that tackles contemporary societal issues. She won the prize for her entry titled ‘Bread, Cement, Cactus’, a piece that combined memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging. Her proposed book, based on the prize-winning essay, will be published in May 2020 and will examine how a citizen’s sense of home might collapse, or recover.
6. International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers celebrated on May 29
International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was celebrated on May 29. This day adopted by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57/129.
The theme for this year is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”.
The theme marks the upcoming 20th anniversary when for the first time the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL- United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone) to protect civilians. The day was first celebrated on May 29, 1948, to pay tribute to the 3700 uniformed and civilian personnel who lost their lives upholding peace. Ukraine is famous for its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations. Over 45,000 Ukrainians have served in the UN operations since 1991

In June 2018, the ban was imposed due to the outbreak of Nipah virus. Saudi Arabian authorities had communicated this information to the state in the second week of May and it has led to the commencement of direct exports from the 3 airports.
The major items of export at present are mangoes such as Alphonso, Banganapalle, followed by banana and pineapple. Kerala exports around 150 tonnes of perishable commodities to gulf countries. It alone exports 30-40 tonnes to Saudi Arabia.

Walmart Appoints Suresh Kumar as Chief Technology Officer. US-based retail chain Walmart appointed Suresh Kumar, an IIT Madras graduate, and former Google executive, as chief technology officer and chief development officer. The appointment comes at a time when Walmart is transforming its customer and associate experiences. He has 25 years of technology leadership experience, coming from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM.

10. India moves up to 43rd in competitiveness; Singapore tops chart
India moves up to 43rd in competitiveness; Singapore tops chart. India secured 43rd rank in the most competitive economy across the world and Singapore topped the chart by toppling the US from the first position and Hong Kong SAR ranked 2nd place as same as last year. The US ranked 3rd in the ranking. Switzerland ranked 4th in the ranking.
UAE first time entered into the top 5 rankings. Last year in 2018 UAE ranked 7th. Venezuela ranked last in the rankings due to high inflation, poor access to credit and a weak economy. The improvement of India’s rank resulted of its robust economic growth, large labour force and its huge market size.
11. Narendra Modi takes oath as India’s Prime Minister for second term
Narendra Modi, who was elected for a second term at the Centre, took oath as the Prime Minister at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by leaders of the BIMSTEC member countries. Several foreign and Opposition leaders attended the ceremony including Presidents of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and Congress’ Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
12. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy takes oath as Andhra Pradesh CM
YSR Congress Party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took oath as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in Vijayawada at 12:23 pm today. The 46-year-old had offered prayers at Tirupati temple ahead of the ceremony. Notably, his party won 151 of 175 seats in the Assembly elections, nearly a decade after its launch and staying in the opposition.
13. MoU: signed between IIT Guwahati and ISRO
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding MoU with The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to set up an IITG-ISRO Space Technology Cell (STC). The Space Technology Cell (STC) would be a first of its kind in the North-East region that would augment research and capacity building processes in field of space technology.
14. ACM BS Dhanoa receives Baton of Chairman COSC
The Chief of the Air Staff (COAS) Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa received the baton of Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) from Admiral. Sunil Lanba, the outgoing Chief of the Naval Staff and also COSC Chairman. Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa will take over as new Chairman COSC with effect from 31 May 2019 consequent to release of charge by Admiral Sunil Lanba upon hus superannuation.
15. Burnout classified as medical condition: WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) has for the first time recognised “burn-out” in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The decision was taken during the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. In latest update of WHO’s catalogue of diseases and injuries gloablly, WHO defined Burn-out as- syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
