  1. Priyanka to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award

Actor Priyanka Chopra will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for being an international icon. The Quantico star will be given the award under the newly introduced ‘Internationally Acclaimed Actress’ category at a ceremony in Mumbai on June 1.

The ‘Mary Kom’ actress, who has done the country proud with her achievements in the international circuit, will be the first recipient of this award.

  1. ‘The Square’ wins top award at Cannes Film Festival 2017

Art world satire The Square, directed by Ruben Ostlund, has won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The Swedish title was one of 19 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, in the 70th year of the festival on the French Riviera. Prizes also went to British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay and director Sofia Coppola.

  1. Najma Heptulla appointed as new Jamia Millia Islamia chancellor

Manipur Governor and former minority affairs minister Najma Heptulla has been appointed as the chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. Jamia Vice-Chancellor Talat Ahmad confirmed the development, saying she has been appointed for a term of five years. The 77-year old Heptulla succeeds Lt Gen (Retd) MA Zaki who completes his five-year term this month.

Heptulla who has been a five time member of the Rajya Sabha and its deputy chairman for sixteen years served as the minister of minority affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet before being appointed as the governor of Manipur.

  1. Pune city police receive FICCI smart policing Award 2017

The Pune city police have received the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) Smart Police Award for the year 2017. Pune Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla received the award from BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi during a programme organised by FICCI and Vivekanand International Foundation on Homeland Security in Delhi on May 25.

  1. Dailong Village in Manipur Declared biodiversity Heritage site

The Manipur government has declared Dailong village of Tamenglong district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site of the state. A notification in this connection was issued by joint secretary of forest and environment, Kengoo Zuringla.

Dialong village, covering an area of 11.35 sq km, has been declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site under Section 37(1) of Biological Diversity Act, 2002. The declaration was made after the recommendation of Manipur Biodiversity Board, the state government said in the notification.

  1. Prakash Javadekar launches UGC App to fight Ragging

Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has launched an Anti-Ragging Mobile App introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) here in New Delhi. Speaking on this occasion Shri Javadekar said this mobile app will help students register complaints to counter the menace of ragging.

The website for registering a complaint of ragging and record shows that timely action was taken which in turn had resulted in the decrease of such instances. But still this ill has to be eliminated completely

  1. Vadodara sets world record for most people sweeping floor

Residents of Vadodara, the 10th cleanest city in the country has created a new Guinness world record with maximum number of people sweeping the ‘floor’ (single venue). Vadodara municipal corporation commissioner Vinod Rao said around 5,058 people came together to sweep the venue – a bridge connecting Akota with Dandia bazaar – spread over one kilometre. The record was achieved by participants who swept the place in groups of 50.

  1. PM to visit 4 countries in 6 days

Prime Minister Narendra Modi set out on a six-day, four-nation tour of Germany, Spain, Russia and France on 29 November 2017 with an agenda to boost bilateral relations, enhance trade and seek investments. Modi will first visit Germany for the fourth India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) on May 30 along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Meseberg, near Berlin.

  1. SEBI proposes to levy $1,000 regulatory fee on FPIs issuing P-Notes

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed to tighten rules on offshore derivative instruments (ODI) by imposing “regulatory fees” and prohibiting the sales of such products unless they are issued for hedging purposes. In a consultation paper, SEBI proposed that ODI issuers be given till Dec. 31, 2020 to wind down any ODIs issued for speculative purposes. 

  1. 29 May 2017: International day of UN peacekeepers

The United Nations General Assembly designated 29 May as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The day has two purposes:

  • To honour the memory of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace
  • To pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN Peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.

The theme for the 2017 International Day of UN Peacekeepers is “Investing in Peace Around the World“.

  1. ADB provides $616 million loan to improve power systems in Bangladesh

 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a $616 million loan to Bangladesh to help the south Asian nation meet its goal of providing 100 percent access to electricity to its citizens by 2021.

The project includes rehabilitation and expansion of over 50,000 kilometers of rural distribution network across the country, construction of a 174-km 400 kV transmission link between southern Bangladesh and Dhaka, and installation of automated control systems for the distribution network in the capital.

  1. China launches satellite navigation positioning system

China has launched national satellite navigation and positioning system which will provide positioning service to transportation, emergency medical rescue and city planning and management. It is the largest in the country and boasts the widest coverage.

Li Weisen, deputy director of the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, said that the system consists of 2,700 base stations, a national database centre and 30 provincial level database centres.

  1. ISRO to start operation of India’s own ‘GPS’ by 2018

India has  entered an exclusive club of five nations that have their own satellite navigation and positioning system with the launch of IRNSS-1G,known as Navic, the country’s seventh navigation satellite. With the complete system in place, thearmed forces will be able to find their position accurately in the battleground and direct ammunition and missiles deep into enemy territory, thanks to the extended range of 1,500 km of the system beyond the borders.

  1. Indian researchers develop 3D bioprinted cartilage

Millions of people around the world suffer from degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis. Despite attempting for the last 30 years, scientists across the world have not been able to produce in the lab cartilage-like tissues that are functionally and structurally similar to cartilages seen in human knees and have load-bearing capacity.

For the first time, Indian researchers have been able to achieve a measure of success in developing cartilages that are molecularly similar to the ones seen in human knees.

  1. China warns India over Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Arunachal

China has asked India to be “cautious” and exercise “restraint” over building infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh, days after Prime Narendra Modi launched the country’s longest bridge linking Assam with the state claimed by Beijing. China’s position on the eastern section of the Sino-Indian border areas is consistent and clear.

  1. India and Fiji Sign MoU on Defence Cooperation

The Minister of Defence and National Security of Fiji Ratu Inoke Kubuabola accompanied by his delegation met the Minister of Defence, Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley in New Delhi. An MoU on defence cooperation envisaging several areas of cooperation including in defence industry, military training and humanitarian assistance & disaster management was signed. The Ministers discussed expanded defence partnership in maritime security between both the countries, and naval cooperation was identified as an area of promise.
