  1. Man of Steel’ Hemant Gupta scales Mount Everest

Tata Steel employee Hemant Gupta, who was steadily progressing towards the summit in his Everest expedition, conquered the Mount Everest. The 27-year-old has joined Tata Steel as a management trainee (MT) in Tata Steel’s new plant in Kalinganagar Orissa.

As an MT, he had undertaken the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) Outdoor Leadership Course in Uttarkashi Himalaya. His first tryst with adventure came through his successful completion of the one month Basic Mountaineering Course from the National Mountaineering Institute in Manali.

  1. Jaitley inaugurates new aeronautical test range in Karnataka’s Challakere

Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has inaugrated a first-of-its-kind Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) which will be used to test the country’s first unmanned aircraft in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

The facility, which will spread across an area of 4,200 acres, will be the leading test centre for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that has been using the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd airport in Bengaluru to test fly the Tejas combat aircraft so far.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu has flagged off the first train of the Delhi Metro’s Heritage line. It will be open for public from 27 May 2017. The ITO-Kashmere Gate ‘Heritage Line’ of the Delhi Metro has received safety clearance, paving the way for its long-awaited commercial launch. With this launch, the Delhi Metro will make a major foray into old Delhi or the ‘Walled City’, with four stations: Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate.

Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has overtaken Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) to become India’s most profitable state-owned company. IOC, which has for decades been India’s biggest company by turnover, posted a 70 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 19,106.40 crore in the financial year ended March 31, 2017.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries retained the crown of being India’s most profitable company for the third year in a row, posting a net Rs 29,901 crore in financial year 2016-17.

State-run BSNL is planning to extend satellite phone services for all citizens in two years that can work at any corner of the country and remain immune to breakdown of mobile services during natural calamities. Satellite phones will able to work in any part of the country, even inside flights and ships, as they depend on signals directly from satellites located about 35,700 kms above the earth.

FPIs invested a net Rs 9,007 crore in equities during May 2-26, while they poured Rs 15,769 crore in the debt markets during the period under review, translating into a net inflow of Rs 24,776 crore ($3.85 billion).

The Reserve Bank is expected to come out by June-July with guidelines to regulate the Indian peer-to-peer (P2P) lending market. The RBI had floated a consultation paper in April 2016 on the Indian P2P lending that has been taking roots in India. The borrowing-lending channel Faircent.Com, which is run by Gurugram-based Fairassets Technologies India, said the sector will grow over a period of time as more and more people become aware of this vertical.

Island nation Mauritius elbowed out Singapore to emerge as the top source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India in 2016-17. In absolute terms, foreign inflow from Mauritius in 2016 -17 stood at $15.72 billion whereas that of Singapore read $8.71 billion, showed data of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). In 2015-16, Singapore was in the numero uno position.

Standing tall on the rocket port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh is the country’s latest rocket called the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk- III), the heaviest rocket ever made by India that is capable of carrying the heaviest satellites till now.

India’s CA Bhavani Devi has won the gold medal in the sabre event of the Turnoi Satellite Fencing Championship held at Reykjavik in Iceland. she beat Sarah Jane Hampson of Great Britain 15-13 on points, said a press note in Reykajvik. She now trains at the Sports Authority of India centre at Thalassery.

  1. Allman Brothers Band leader Gregg Allman passes away at 69

Gregg Allman, the organist and singer for the Allman Brothers Band, which helped spawn the genre of southern rock, has died. He was 69. The first Allman Brothers Band lineup featured Duane and Dickey Betts on guitar alongside two drummers.

Allman Brothers Band, as well as one its main songwriters and keyboard player, Gregg Allman was a major contributor to the movement that became known as southern rock, which included the Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Charlie Daniels Band.
