1. Idashisha Nongrang appointed first woman police DGP of Meghalaya.

The first woman and tribal lady, Idashisha Nongrang, will become the Director General of Police (DGP) in Meghalaya on May 20, 2024. She breaks barriers by being the first woman and tribal lady to do so.

Nongrang was chosen from a list suggested by the UPSC. He has a great history in civil defense and as SP for East Khasi Hills. He will be in this position for two years.

LR Bishnoi is going to retire soon, and she will take over after that.

2. Noted Punjabi poet Surjit Patar passes away at 79

Surjit Patar, a famous Punjabi author and recipient of the Padma Shri (2012), died at the age of 79. His death caused a stir in both the literary and political worlds, with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann calling him a “proud son of Punjabi language.”

Some of the awards that were given to Patar were the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Saraswati Samman.

He quit his job as a Punjabi professor at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana.

3. International Nurses Day – May 12

Since 1965, this day has been marked by the International Council of Nurses (ICN).

On May 12, which is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, people all over the world celebrate this day.

This day is a great chance to honour and recognize the important work and accomplishments of nurses all over the world.

4. Vivek Bipindada Kolhe elected as a Director of IFFCO

The Chairman of the Sahkar Maharshi Shankarao Kolhe Co-operative Sugar Factory, Vivek Bipindada Kolhe, has been chosen to be a Director of the Indian Farmers Fertilizers Co-op Ltd (IFFCO) in New Delhi.

  • IFFCO’s main office is in New Delhi.
  • CEO: Dr. Udai Shanker Awasthi
  • Established on November 3, 1967, in New Delhi

5. ISRO successfully tests 3D-printed Rocket Engine

Using 3D printing, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was able to successfully complete a long-term heat test of a PS4 rocket engine.

The engine is produced in a single piece using additive manufacturing, which results in a reduction of production time by sixty percent and a savings of ninety-seven percent on raw materials.

Over the course of the entire qualification period, which lasted for 665 seconds, the engine was successfully tested.

ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre was the one responsible for its development.

6. Wipro Appoints Vinay Firake as CEO of APMEA Strategic Market Unit

Wipro, a big name in IT, has named Vinay Firake as the new CEO of its strategic market unit (SMU) for Asia Pacific, India, the Middle East, and Africa (APMEA).

Firake will start his new job right away. Srini Pallia is the CEO and Managing Director of Wipro. Firake will report straight to him and will also be a part of the company’s executive board.

Taking over for Anis Chenchah: Anis Chenchah, who was CEO of the APMEA SMU before Firake was hired, is leaving the position to look for work outside of the company.

  • Vinay Firake has worked at Wipro for more than 26 years and has been a leader in many different places around the world. For his new job, he will be based in Dubai.
  • Firake was most recently the Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the Wipro-Nordics Business Unit in Stockholm.
  • In that role, he was in charge of operations in a wide range of businesses and services.
  • Before that, he was in charge of the Manufacturing & Automotive Business Unit in Europe and had worked in several different positions in both Europe and North America.

7. Coca-Cola India Joins Forces with Hockey India to Empower Women’s Hockey

The Coca-Cola India Foundation and Hockey India have joined forces for the first time for the National Women’s Hockey League 2024.

The goal of this partnership is to improve women’s hockey by giving players the tools and support they need.

This is in line with Coca-Cola India’s #SheTheDifference program, which supports sports and gender equality.

About the Partnership

  • In a three-year plan, Coca-Cola India and Hockey India will improve women’s hockey by focusing on providing specialized coaching, training tools, nutritional support, and camps and tournaments to help the sport grow.
  • Sporting Ethos is behind the project, which tries to improve the lives of women who play hockey both in Canada and around the world.

8. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan Honoured with Honorary Doctorate by McGill University

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan is a world-renowned expert in infectious diseases and public health.

He is one of 10 outstanding people who will receive an honorary degree from Canada’s famous McGill University during the Spring 2024 Convocation ceremonies.

A Very Interesting Trip

  • Swaminathan, who is 65 years old, has had a great career in study and clinical care for more than 40 years.
  • Her first job at the World Health Organization (WHO) was as Deputy Director-General (Programs) in 2017.
  • In March 2019, she was named the organization’s first Chief Scientist, a position she held through the COVID-19 pandemic and until late 2022.

9. International Day of Plant Health 2024 Observed on 12th May

Every year on May 12, people around the world celebrate the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to bring attention to how important it is to protect plant health.

The goals of this global effort are to end hunger, lower poverty, protect biodiversity, and boost economic growth around the world.

The International Day of Plant Health is on May 12, 2024, which is also Mother’s Day. This is a time to honour moms for their love, care, and sacrifices.

The theme for the International Day of Plant Health 2024 is ‘Plant Health, Safe Trade, Digital Technology.
