1. Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Takes Helm as Chief of Personnel of Indian Navy

Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, AVSM, NM, has been a distinguished navy officer for over 35 years.

On May 10, 2024, he became the Chief of Personnel of the Indian Navy, which is a very important job. His long career has been marked by a number of difficult and rewarding jobs, both at sea and on land.

On a Trip Through Specialty and Command

When Vice Admiral Bhalla joined the Indian Navy on January 1, 1989, he specialized in communication and electronic warfare.

He learned new things and got better at what he did while serving on several frontline boats.

After that, he had the honour of being in charge of ships, including the highly sought-after position of Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).

As FOCEF, Vice Admiral Bhalla was in charge of the prestigious President’s Fleet Review (PFR–22) and the Sea Phase of the Indian Navy’s biggest multinational exercise, MILAN–22.

During this time, friendly foreign countries took part in greater numbers than ever before.

2. DRDO and IIT Bhubaneswar Collaborate on Defence Technology Projects

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar and the Defence study and Development Organization (DRDO) have joined forces to do more study in areas like power systems, radar systems, and AI-driven surveillance.

DRDO has permitted IIT Bhubaneswar to work on nine projects from the Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS) Cluster.

Seven more projects are still waiting to be approved and will receive ₹18 crore in funds.

Announcement of Collaboration

Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, talked about how important the collaboration was, saying that it marks a change from creating knowledge to using it in real life, starting businesses, and making skilled professionals.

He thinks that this partnership will help defence science and technology get better.

3. RBI Appoints R. Lakshmi Kanth Rao as Executive Director

R. Lakshmi Kanth Rao has been named Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). She will start her job on May 10, 2024.

As the Chief General Manager in charge of the Department of Regulation, Rao has worked for the RBI for more than 30 years.

Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC): Rao will be in charge of the operations of the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation and make sure that customers’ interests are protected.

Right to Information Act (FAA) and Department of Communication: As Executive Director, Rao will be in charge of the regulatory aspects of the Right to Information Act and the communication channels within the RBI.

4. Putin Reappoints Mikhail Mishustin as Russian Prime Minister

As expected, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reappointed Mikhail Mishustin as Prime Minister of Russia.

This will only happen if the lower house of government, the State Duma, agrees. This choice is part of the legal process that started on Tuesday, when Putin was sworn in as president for the fifth time.

Approval by Parliament: Just a Formality

Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the State Duma, said that the house will meet later on Friday to talk about Mishustin’s bid.

Since the Kremlin rules the parliament, Mishustin’s approval is only seen as a formality.

5. National Technology Day 2024 – May 11

In India, National Technology Day is held every year on May 11.

Today is a time to honour the work of thinkers, scientists, and engineers and to encourage more scientific and technological progress in the United States.

The day was created in 1998 to honour the Pokhran nuclear test, which went well.

India’s scientific progress reached a major turning point with this test. It made it possible for the country to become a leader in nuclear weapons technology.

6. World Migratory Bird Day 2024

Every year on World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), people all over the world work together to bring attention to the need to protect migratory birds and their environments.

That’s right, WMBD will be held twice this year: on Saturday, May 11, 2024, and Saturday, October 12, 2024.

This is to match the regular trends of bird migration in the two halves of the world.

“Insects” is the theme for World Migratory Bird Day 2024. The main focus of this year’s ad will be on showing how important insects are to the lives of migratory birds.

Concerns about the falling populations of insects and the effects that could have on these bird travellers will also be brought up.
