1. World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May every year. The day aims to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and pay tribute to journalists who have laid down their lives in the exercise of their profession. The day also focuses to assess its state around the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence.
Theme:
The theme of 2020 World Press Freedom Day is “Journalism Without Fear or Favour.” The theme creates awareness on specific issues about the safety of journalists, their independence from political or commercial influence, and gender equality in all aspects of the media.
2. Yes Bank appointed Neeraj Dhawan as its Chief Risk Officer
Yes Bank appointed Neeraj Dhawan as its Chief Risk Officer (CRO) with immediate effect. Neeraj was appointed for a period of three years. He assumed charge on 2 May. He replaced Ashish Agarwal, the current CRO, who will be transitioning to a new role in the bank.
3. IDEAthon launched by Jal Shakti ministry
The National Mission for Clean Ganga operating under Ministry of Jal Shakti launched “IDEAthon”. It focuses on “The Future of River Management” to explore how the COVID-19 crisis will change the river management strategies.
The IDEAthon event examined how social angle of rivers can be leveraged to address the crisis. It also discussed about the lessons taught by COVID-19 crisis.
4. Tata Motors JLR CEO Ralf Speth elected Fellow of UK’s Royal Society
Professor Sir Ralf Speth, the Chief Executive of Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has been elected a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society in the UK.
The honour is in recognition of Speth’s advocacy for UK research and development and his commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, JLR said.
5. Kannada poet KS Nissar Ahmed dies at 84 in Bengaluru
Renowned Kannada poet and professor KS Nissar Ahmed passed away on May 3 at his residence in Bengaluru. He was 84.He won the Padma Shri award in 2008 for his immense contribution to Kannada literature. He was also recipient of Sahitya Academy Award and Rajyotsav Award.
6. RBL Bank appoints Deepak Kumar as Chief Risk Officer
The RBL Bank on May 3 said that it has appointed Deepak Kumar as the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of the bank for a period of two years. Kumar will replace Ramnath Krishnan as the CRO, according to the bank.
7. Employees of EPFO contribute Rs 2.5 crore to PM CARES fund
The employees of Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) have also come forward to support the Government’s initiative in combating national crisis of COVID-19 pandemic and voluntarily contributed one day’s salary- amounting to around Rs. 2.5 crore to the PM CARES Fund. EPFO, as one of World’s largest Social Security Organizations, stands committed in the service of the nation in every possible way.
