1. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha gets Sikh Jewel Award

Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema. Chadha, whose films include Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice, received the award from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon at the Vaisakhi Dinner organised by the British Sikh Association.

  1. Indian-American Vanita Gupta appointed president of ‘Leadership Conference’

Indian-American Vanita Gupta, who headed civil rights division in the Department of Justice in the Obama Administration, has been appointed as president and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’, becoming the first woman to head the prestigious organisation. Known for her fearless advocacy of all human beings, 41-year-old Gupta will replace Wade Henderson who is stepping down after more than two decades.

  1. ESIC launched Mobile Clinic Services in AP and Telangana

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched Mobile Clinic Services for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Union minister of state for labour and employment Bandaru Dattatreya, launched the ESIC Mobile Clinic Services by flagging off ‘Jan Suraksha Vans/Ambulances’ that would serve the areas not covered by ESI dispensaries in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

  1. Union Petroleum Ministry launches MoPNG e Seva

Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas,  Dharmendra Pradhan launched MoP&NG e-Seva, a dedicated grievances redressal platform on Social Media for all queries and grievances relating to Oil and Gas Sector. The MOPNG e-Seva is an integrated grievances redressal platform across social media   for all Oil & Gas related service issues. This portal will be a single point interface for all customers to reach out to the government for addressing their feedback or grievances related to Oil & Gas Sector on social media. MOPNG e-Seva will also deliver 24 x 7 support for consumers.

  1. Inauguration of ‘Test Bed’ of IAAMS at INS Rajali

Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, inaugurated the first ever ‘Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS)’ at INS Rajali on 28 March 2017. The IAAMS is an ambitious project of the Indian Navy to modernise the meteorological infrastructure of the nine Naval Air Stations (NAS). INS Rajali at Arakkonam was identified for setting up this sophisticated system on a ‘Test Bed’ site, where the complete integrated system has been tested for its reliability, performance and functioning. The IAAMS project will give a major fillip to aviation safety, through automation of weather monitoring process.

  1. ‘Swachh Bharat Pakhwada’ for Clean and Green Ports and Harbours
  •  To spread awareness on cleanliness as part of its ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’, the Ministry of Shipping is celebrating Swachh Bharat Pakhwada from 16th -31st March, 2017 and has undertaken  various activities under this campaign.
  • The event was launched by Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Shipping and Road Transport & Highways on 16th March 2017, in the premises of the Shipping Corporation of India in Mumbai.
  • The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was launched by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 2nd October, 2014 to urge people to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean India, by his 150th birth anniversary in 2019.
  1. Use of Bitcoin not authorised by the RBI, says Govt
  • The government has said use of virtual currencies like Bitcoins is not authorised by the RBI and could result in breach of anti-money laundering provisions.
  • The RBI had cautioned users, holders and traders of virtual currency, including Bitcoin, about the potential financial, legal and security risks arising from their usage.
  • The absence of counter parties in usage of virtual currencies, including Bitcoins, for illicit and illegal activities in anonymous/pseudonymous systems could subject the users to unintentional breaches of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism laws.
  1. Vijaya Bank inks MoU with Piaggio Vehicles

Vijaya Bank has entered into an MoU with Piaggio Vehicles for providing financial support for the purchase of vehicles under Small Road Transport Operators (SRTO) scheme in Bengaluru. Vijaya Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Kishore Sansi flagged off the first batch of vehicles under the MoU in the presence of Executive Directors B S Rama Rao, Y Nageswara Rao, and Piaggio Vehicles Vice-President Praveen Nagpal and others.

  1. Syndicate Bank opens 40 ‘Ananya’ branches

Syndicate Bank has digitally inaugurated 40 ‘Ananya’ transformed branches. “Project Ananya is a two-year large-scale transformation project undertaken by the bank to provide customers with ‘best in class’ services while improving and modernising the whole bank,” said Arun Shrivastava, Managing Director and CEO, Syndicate Bank.

  1. ICICI Bank partners Truecaller for UPI-based mobile payment solution

ICICI Bank has announced a partnership with mobile app firm Truecaller for a new UPI-based mobile payment service. The new feature shall be called Truecaller Pay, and  it will allow users of the app to instantly create a UPI id, send money to any UPI id or a mobile number registered with the BHIM app, ICICI Bank said in a statement.

  1. Tata AIA launches m-Insurance with Tata Teleservices
  • Tata AIA Life Insurance and Tata Teleservices have jointly launched m-Insurance for the telecom provider’s pre-paid customers. The pilot has been launched in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana.
  • The term life plan offered through m-Insurance comes with two options for the sum assured Rs 50,000 and Rs one lakh.
  • Customers are automatically enrolled on purchase of Tata DoCoMo’s selected mobile recharge coupon (Special Tariff Voucher-STV). There is no need for any additional documentation at the time of purchasing the STV.
  1. Eminent Jurist TR Andhyarujina Passes Away

Eminent jurist and senior advocate T R Andhyarujina passed away. Andhyarujina, 84, who also served as Solicitor General during 1996-98, was part of the team of constitutional law expert H M Seervai in his initial days as a lawyer and witnessed from close-quarters the history-defining hearings in the ‘The Kesavananda Bharati Case’. Seervai had appeared for the Kerela government in the famous Kesavananda Bharati case.

  1. Gurdev Singh Badal Former Punjab minister passes away

Former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Gurdev Singh Badal passed away after prolonged illness. He breathed his last at the DMC Hero Heart Institute at Ludhiana. Gurdev was 85. Gurdev had represented Panjgrain and Jaito assembly seats in the past.
