1. Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month
The rare blood cancer known as multiple myeloma can develop anywhere in the body, including the bones. Every year in March, people around the world come together to raise awareness about this disease.
Can You Explain Multiple Myeloma?
A malignancy of the blood that starts in the bone marrow’s plasma cells is known as multiple myeloma. Several problems might arise in myeloma patients as a result of the fast proliferation of malignant cells, which engulf healthy blood cells.
The aberrant proteins secreted by these cancer cells can also hinder regular body processes, such as kidney function.
Signs and Potential Dangers
These are the most prevalent signs of multiple myeloma:
- Very easily fatigued
- Ongoing discomfort in the lower back
- Continual fever and infection
- Sera showing increased creatinine levels
- Bone discomfort due to bone weakness, elevated blood calcium levels, and fractures caused by very little trauma
2. Vijay Jain Bags Times Power Icon 2024 Award
The managing director of Star Estate, Vijay Jain, was presented with the esteemed Times Power Icon 2024 Award at a glitzy ceremony that was recently hosted in Noida by The Times Group.
Ada Sharma, a legend in the film industry, was there to deliver the award to Vijay Jain as part of the event’s celebration and honoring of top industry executives.

The Times Power Icon 2024 Award was given to Vijay Jain in recognition of his exceptional leadership and groundbreaking work in the real estate industry.

3. Sharfuddoula Becomes Bangladesh’s First ICC Elite Umpire
Sharfuddoula made history when he was appointed to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, becoming him the first umpire from Bangladesh to do so.
The appointment was finalized after he passed the yearly review and selection procedure of the International Cricket Council.
How to Choose Candidates
The selection panel that decided to promote Sharfuddoula from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Umpires included the following individuals: Sanjay Manjrekar, a former player and commentator, Tony Hill, a retired umpire from New Zealand, and Mike Riley, a consultant officiating expert. Wasim Khan served as chair of the panel.
An Experienced Referee
Sharfuddoula, 47 years old, has been a member of the International Panel since 2006. He presided over a one-day international (ODI) match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2010, marking his first international appointment.
4. India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise (IMT TRILAT 24) Concludes
On March 28, 2024, at Nacala, Mozambique, the second session of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise, IMT TRILAT 24, came to a successful conclusion.
During this week-long exercise, the navies of Tanzania, Mozambique, and India worked together to improve their maritime cooperation and interoperability.
Important Points from IMT TRILAT 24’s Harbour Phase (March 21–24, 24):
- Port Maputo and Zanzibar hosted intensive training sessions aboard the INS Sujata and INS Tir, respectively.
- Classes covered topics such as medical lectures, damage control, firefighting drills, communication protocols, and the Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) procedure.
- Highlighting the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration and casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) procedures.
Transition to the Sea (beginning on March 24):
- The ships INS Tir and INS Sujata were escorted by sea riders from the Mozambique and Tanzanian fleets.
- The Tanzanian naval vessel Fatundu and the Mozambique naval ship Namatili conducted joint operations.
- Joint EEZ monitoring off Mozambique and Tanzania, simulated VBSS drills, and night movements.
5. Legendary Actor Louis Gossett Jr. Passes Away at 87
Sadly, at the age of 87, Louis Gossett Jr. has gone away. He was the first Black man to receive the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
On March 29, his cousin Neal L Gossett verified his death, saying he passed away at a Santa Monica, California, rehabilitation center.
An Honorable Profession
Gossett Jr. had an impressive career that lasted for almost 70 years.
His 1983 Best Supporting Actor Oscar award for his portrayal of a Marine drill instructor in “An Officer and a Gentleman” was his crowning achievement.
Despite stiff competition from the likes of Charles Durning, John Lithgow, James Mason, and Robert Preston, he became the first African-American to take home this prize with this historic triumph.
In 1977, he was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal in the highly regarded miniseries “Roots,” which was adapted from Alex Haley’s novel. After Sidney Poitier’s 1953 victory, Gossett Jr. became the first Black actor to win an Oscar in any category, making history as the first Black actor to win Best Supporting Actor.
6. International Day of Zero Waste 2024 is observed on March 30
The United Nations General Assembly established March 30 as the annual date to commemorate International Day of Zero Waste in a resolution voted on December 14, 2022.
In the pursuit of sustainable development, this day is observed to bring attention to the need of trash reduction and the promotion of zero-waste projects.
