1. Virat Kohli receives Padma Shri at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Virat Kohli was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by President Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Besides Kohli, hockey captain PR Sreejesh and Rio Olympic silver medallist Sakshi Malik and gymnast Dipa Karmakar and fourth other sportspersons were conferred with the prestigious award.

  1. Govt signs deal for Hydrocarbon project in Neduvasal

The Government of India signed a contract for the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) Bid 2016 with GEM Laboratories for extracting Hydrocarbons at Neduvasal, in Tamil Nadu, even as protests from local villagers against the proposed plan intensified, following the development. The contract was one of the many signed for 31 areas under the DSF Bid Round 2016.

  1. Kerala, Tripura and Arunachal joined UDAY

Kerala, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh have joined the Centre’s power distribution company debt relief scheme, Ujjwal Discom Assurance Yojna. With this, 26 states have joined the scheme.The government estimates that Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura will gain net benefits of approximately ₹4,178 crore, ₹309 crore and ₹810 crore respectively. Since the state discoms have relatively lower loses, these benefits will accrue from reducing transmission losses and demand side management by the discoms.

  1. Hyderabad 1st Indian city with 1Gbps wired broadband service

ACT Fibernet has launched India’s first 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) wired broadband services in Hyderabad at a premium price of Rs 5,999 per month. ACT Fibernet’s 1 Gbps wired broadband service would soon be available in the 11 cities the company has presence in. ACT Fibernet claims to be the largest non-telecommunication internet service provider (ISP). The company takes advantage of fiber optic technology to deliver 1 Gbps broadband speed, which is 400 times faster than the average internet speed.

  1. Chenani-Nashri Tunnel: The longest road tunnel in South Asia

Asia’s longest bi-directional road tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on April 2, which will cut down travel time between the two by two hours. The Rs 2,519-crore all-weather tunnel is equipped with world-class safety features and has been built in a record four years on the hilly terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

  1. India, Nepal renew fuel supply pact

State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has signed a petroleum trade agreement to supply about 1.3 million tonnes of fuel annually to Nepal with a promise to double the volume by 2020. “The supply agreement signed is for April 2017 to March 2022 and will meet full requirements/demand and quantities of all the major oil products. It has also agreed to compensate NOC if it failed to supply products as per the demand.

The 9th World Environmental Education Congress which takes place September 9-15, 2017 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) is an international congress addressing education for environment and sustainability. WEEC 2017 is the 9th congress and will feature the theme of Culture/Environment: Weaving New Connections. The congress is an international meeting point for everyone working with education for environment and sustainable future or who has an interest in the field.

  1. US astronaut breaks Sunita Williams’ spacewalking record

American astronaut Peggy Whitson made history when she floated outside the International Space Station, breaking the record for the most spacewalks by a woman. Whitson, 57, is making her eighth career spacewalk, surpassing the record of seven previously held by American Sunita Williams. The spacewalk formally began at 7:29 am (local time) when Whitson and Shane Kimbrough switched their spacesuits to battery power before venturing outside the airlock and into the vacuum of space.

  1. Tamil Nadu become 1st state to win all BCCI senior trophies

Tamil Nadu has become the first state to win all BCCI senior trophies after winning the Deodhar Trophy. Tamil Nadu state, which has won the Ranji Trophy in the year 1987-88, also won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the year 2017, making the state five-time winners in the tournament. Tamil Nadu has won the Irani Cup in the year of 1988-89 and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the year of 2007-08.

  1. Srinath Narayanan becomes India’s 46th chess Grandmaster

Srinath Narayanan is all set to become India’s 46th Grandmaster after he defeated Spanish Grandmaster David Anton Guijarro (Elo rating of 2676) at the Sharjah Masters. Srinath Narayanan, the 23-year-old from Chennai, came into limelight when he became India’s youngest FIDE rated chess player in 2002 when he was just eight years old. Three years later, Srinath Narayanan became joint-winner at the under-12 world chess championship held in Belfort, France.
