The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the Abel Prize for 2017 to mathematician Yves Meyer of the Ecole normale superieure Paris-Saclay, France, for his “pivotal role in the development of mathematical theory of wavelets.” The theory of wavelets that he started and made fundamental contributions to finds wide-ranging applications from image processing to fluid dynamics.
- Raghu Rai conferred with Lifetime Achievement award
Photojournalist Raghu Rai was conferred with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry for “his remarkable contribution to the field.” Rai was honoured with the award by I&B minister M. Venkaiah Naidu at 6th National Photography Awards organised by the photo division of the ministry in the capital. The ministry felicitated a total 13 photographers. Among the winners were K.K. Mustafah, Atul Choubey, Dipayan Bhar and Ravinder Kumar.
- RBI approves appointment of T S Anantharaman as part-time chairman
The Reserve Bank of India has accorded its approval for the appointment of T S Anantharaman as part-time Chairman of the bank. Anantharaman has been holding the position of Non-Executive Director of the bank since August 28, 2009. Anantharaman is a senior chartered accountant with wide and varied experience in practice, industry, teaching, consulting and service. He served with United Nations for seven years. Anantharaman was the President of Chamber of Commerce, Thrissur, Thrissur Management Association and a number of other institutions.
- World Bank signs US$ 100 million credit agreement with Uttarakhand, Centre
The World Bank has signed a 100 million US dollar credit agreement with the Centre and Uttarakhand in New Delhi to improve the quality of health care services in all 13 districts of the state. World Bank stated that most public health facilities in the middle and upper mountainous areas of Uttarakhand are unable to function optimally. The project also aims to reduce the financial risk for its citizens and make affordable, quality health care available to all.

State Bank of India (SBI) chief Arundhati Bhattacharya has been ranked 26th in the Fortune’s top 50 greatest leaders. She is the only Indian corporate leader in the list. Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman, SBI, has been ranked 26th in the fourth edition of Fortune’s World 50 Greatest Leaders list. By this, Arundhati Bhattacharya becomes the only Indian corporate leader to be featured in the list.

This year WHO has placed a special focus on the uniting efforts to ‘Leave no one behind’ India has the highest number of tuberculosis (TB) patients globally, about 25 per cent of all cases. While an urban tuberculosis case infects more individuals per year, a similar case in rural area remains infectious for longer period, according to the findings of a new research.
- eBay’s India operations to be acquired by Flipkart
The global biggies such as Amazon and China’s Alibaba, the Bengaluru-headquartered ecommerce major Flipkart is likely to snap up US-headquartered eBay’s India operations. The move is part of the company’s overall plans to raise $2 billion from a series of investors, including fund infusion from eBay in return for its operations getting acquired by the Indian etailer giant.

Ankur Mittal clinched the gold medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in the double trap event, pipping Australian rival James Willet in the final in a world record equalling effort. Mittal had settled for silver at the recent International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in New Delhi, where Willet had won the gold.

The largest ever 3D map of space dust in the Milky Way has been created revealing the intricate structure of our galaxy in all its vast complexity. Users can take a meander through interstellar space by exploring the dust map or navigate to a specific galactic location. Harvard astronomers built the map – which covers three quarters of Earth’s sky – using data collected from 800 million stars.
- Writer Ashokamitran passes away
Prominent Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi winner Ashokamitran, who powerfully portrayed the lives and struggles of the urban middle class life in his literary works, died aged 86. In a career spanning over six decades, he wrote eight novels, 20 novellas, hundreds of short stories, commentaries on a wide range of issues, and profiles of personalities. He was given the Sahitya Akademi award in 1996 for Appavin Snegidhar, a collection of short stories. Twice, he was awarded the creative writing fellowship at the University of Iowa.
