1. Two Indian authors on Wellcome Book Prize 2017 shortlist

  • Two Indian-American authors have been shortlisted for the 30,000 pound Wellcome Book Prize, which celebrates fiction and non-fiction works engaged with the topics of health and medicine
  • Siddhartha Mukherjee is on the list of the annual prize for his study of genetics and mental health in his book ‘The Gene’
  • He is joined by fellow Indian-American author Paul Kalanithi, who could become the first posthumous winner of the prize for his life-affirming reflection on facing mortality ‘When Breath Becomes Air’.
  1. Shashank Manohar resigns from ICC chairman’s post

Shashank Manohar has resigned as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. Manohar had taken over the responsibility of being ICC’s first independent chairman in May 2016 after stepping down from his position as Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) president.

3. Biren Singh to be Sworn in Next CM of Manipur

Biren Singh was sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur in Imphal. The oath of office was administered by Governor Najma Heptulla. Eight others were also sworn in, taking the number of Ministers in the BJP-led government to nine. Yumnan Joykumar Singh of the National People’s Party (NPP) was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister. The lawmaker from the Uripok Assembly constituency is a former Director General of Police from the State.

4. Gujarat to provide e-marketplace for businesses

  • The Gujarat government has entered into an agreement with a global cloud-based solutions provider cloudBuy.com to develop a B2B marketplace for small and large business units in the state.
  • The e-marketplace will be used to promote businesses in the state on one single platform, where members can trade with each other and across India and globally.
  • The project has been developed as part of the Centre’s ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
  1. Hyderabad Indian city with highest quality of living: Survey

Indian cities have performed poorly on a globally recognized survey that ranks cities in terms of how it is to live and work in them. Hyderabad, the highest ranked Indian city, is down five ranks from last year’s 139 in the Mercer 2017 Quality of Living Index. Pune and Bengaluru have both slipped by one rank to 145 and 146, respectively, in this year’s ranking.

  1. Sidharth MLA of BJP appointed as Protem Speaker of Goa Assembly for floor test

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Panaji Sidharth Kuncalienkar has been appointed as Protem Speaker for Goa Assembly Floor test tomorrow. He will be sworn in by the Governor. Goa Governor Mridula Sinha administered the oath of office to Parrikar at the Raj Bhavan. Former defence minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manohar Parrikar took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Goa.

  1. Footwear Design And Development Institute Bill, 2017 Introduced In The Lok Sabha

Commerce & Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) Bill, 2017 in the Lok Sabha on 14th March, 2017 to declare the FDDI as an Institution of National Importance (INI).The objective of the proposed legislation is to facilitate and promote teaching, training and research in all disciplines relating to design and development of Footwear and leather products and to enable FDDI to emerge as Centre of Excellence meeting international standards.

  1. Cabinet approves of MoU between India and Bangladesh on Aids to Navigation (AtoNs)

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Aids to Navigation (AtoNs) between the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL), Ministry of Shipping, Government of India and the Department of Shipping, Government of Bangladesh.

The MoU envisages cooperation between Bangladesh and India:

  1. To extend advice on lighthouses and beacons;
  2. To extend advice on Vessel Traffic Service and chain of Automatic Identification System (AIS); and
  3. To impart training as per International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) training module to AtoN Managers and Technicians for Bangladesh.

9. World Bank loan for MP solar plant

The World Bank has agreed to provide loan to develop internal transmission arrangements of the upcoming Rewa Ultra Mega Solar project in Madhya Pradesh.  he World Bank has agreed to provide loan to develop internal transmission arrangements of the Rewa project. It will provide 25 per cent of the loan amount under its Clean Technology Fund , where the money will be provided at an interest rate of only 0.25 per cent.

American-Indian Seema Verma has been sworn in as the head of a key healthcare agency in the Trump administration. As the head of the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services she will head the US $1 trillion federal agency. The Department of Health and Human Services agency provides health services to 130 million Americans.
