BJP’s Nongthombam Biren Singh was elected as the legislature party leader in Manipur and will meet Governor Najma Heptulla to stake claim to form the government. Biren Singh, MLA from Heingang Constituency, will be the Bharatiya Janata Party’s first Chief Minister in the state.
- HSBC names AIA’s Tucker as chairman
HSBC Holdings Plc, Europe’s biggest bank, tapped an outsider for its top job, appointing insurance veteran and AIA Group boss Mark Tucker as chairman to replace Douglas Flint, who plans to step down in 2017. A one-time professional footballer who has held several leadership jobs including running Britain’s Prudential, Tucker will take over as group chairman designate from September 1 and as non-executive group chairman on Oct. 1.
- Manohar Parrikar appointed Goa chief minister
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was appointed the Goa Chief Minister. He has to prove majority on floor of the House within 15 days of taking oath. Parrikar, who resigned from the Union Cabinet, will be sworn-in with 10 ministers. Governor Mridula Sinha has appointed Manohar Parrikar, the Leader of the Goa BJP legislature party, as the chief minister of Goa.
- Arun Jaitley given additional charge of Defence Ministry
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been given charge of the Defence Ministry in addition to his Finance portfolio, to fill in for Manohar Parrikar who resigned as the Defence Minister in order to become the Chief Minister of the BJP government in Goa. Arun Jaitley was in charge of the Defence and Finance Ministries for the first three months after the NDA government took charge in 2014.

While Assam’s Kaziranga has continued fight against poaching activities as poachers killed 39 rhinos since the year 2012, the world heritage site get a remarkable achievement as increased the one horned rhinoceros population by 39 in a single year. The recent census report said that, the rhino population in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is now 2329, an increase of 39 in the past one year from 2290. The last census of rhinos in Kaziranga was concluded on Monda (March 25).
- Intel buys self-driving tech startup Mobileye for $15.3 bn
Intel, the chipmaking giant it would pay $15.3bn to buy Mobileye, the maker of autonomous driving technology, in one of the biggest deals yet in the emerging field of self-driving cars and Israel’s biggest-ever cross-border acquisition. The two companies announced a definitive agreement under which a subsidiary of Intel will begin a tender offer to buy all of Mobileye’s shares for $63.54 each in cash.
- Boeing to set up first overseas factory in China
US aircraft giant Boeing will set up its first overseas factory in eastern China aiming to deliver 100 Boeing 737 planes a year. Boeing and Chinese aviation manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd (COMAC) will start to build a Boeing 737 completion centre in Zhoushan by the end of March, scheduled to make its first delivery in 2018.
- Japan to send largest warship to South China Sea
Japan plans to dispatch its largest warship on a three-month tour through the South China Sea beginning in May, three sources said, in its biggest show of naval force in the region since World War Two. China claims almost all the disputed waters and its growing military presence has fueled concern in Japan and the West, with the United States holding regular air and naval patrols to ensure freedom of navigation.
- Chawrasia won Indian Open title for second consecutive time
Defending champion SSP Chawrasia claimed his second consecutive Indian Open title after racing to victory at 10 under DLF Golf Course in Gurgaon. Five-time Asian Tour winner Chawrasia became only the second Indian to win the Indian Open in in two successive years after Jyoti Randhawa. Another Indian, Anirban Lahiri finished tied sixth in the competition.
- Lee Chong Wei won Men’s Singles title of All England Open badminton
Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia has lifted the Men’s Singles crown at the All England Open Badminton championship. In the final in Birmingham, the 34-year-old world number one defeated Shi Yuqi of China in straight games 21-12, 21-10. For the Malaysian, it is his fifth singles title in seven finals in the prestigeous championships. The Chinese pair of Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong won the Mixed Doubles title by defeating the Malaysian duo of Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goah in the final in three games.
