1. World Bank plans $100-mn guarantee scheme for solar rooftop projects
The World Bank plans to introduce a $100-million credit guarantee scheme to boost India’s rooftop solar programme, which has not gained enough traction. The scheme will allow micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to avail concessional debt financing for setting up rooftop solar units.
2. Manpreet Vohra Appointed India’s High Commissioner To Australia
Senior diplomat, Manpreet Vohra has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Australia. Vohra, a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is presently Ambassador of India to Mexico.
3. SBI Mutual Funds Launches First Overseas Fund
The State Bank of India (SBI) Mutual Funds has launched its first overseas offering on 1 March 2021. The fund titled SBI International Access — US Equity FOF is an open-ended fund of funds scheme investing in a mutual fund scheme/ETFs that invest in US markets, which are domiciled overseas.
4. National Security Day: 04 March
In India, March 4 is celebrated as National Security Day (Rashtriya Suraksha Diwas) every year, in the honor of the Indian Security Forces. The day aims to show gratitude to all the security forces, including policemen, para-military forces, commandos, guards, army officers, and other persons involved in security, who sacrifice their life in maintaining the peace and security of the people of the country.
5. National Safety Day: 04 March
The National Safety Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on 4 March by the National Safety Council (NSC) of India. In 2021, we are observing the 50th National Safety Day. The purpose of the day is to instil a sense of safety awareness among people by providing them with safety, health and environment-related support services.
The National Safety Day Theme 2021 is “Sadak Suraksha (Road Safety)”.
6. Which are the top 10 cities with less than 10L population in Ease of Living Index?
Shimla has been placed at top among the cities with less than 10 lakh population in the country in the government’s “Ease of Living Index 2020”. This is followed by Bhubaneswar, Silvassa, Kakinada, Salem, Vellore, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Davangere and Tiruchirapalli. Bengaluru has been ranked on top among the cities with more than 10 lakh population.
7. Elon Musk Tops Hurun Global Rich List 2021
Tesla chief Elon Musk bagged the top spot on the Hurun Global Rich List for the first time after adding a massive $151 billion during the year 2020 to take his net worth to $197 billion.
Amazon.com Inc CEO Jeff Bezos ranked second with $189 billion in net worth. Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton SE, the world’s largest luxury-goods company ranked third with a net worth of $114 billion.
8. Arunachal Pradesh government to develop three model villages in Indo-Tibet China border areas
The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has decided to develop three model villages along the Indo-Tibet border area as a pilot project with an allocation of Rs. 30 crores. The move aims at boosting the development of the border areas.
9. India signs key pact with Philippines for supply of BrahMos Cruise Missile
The Government of India on March 2, 2021, signed a key pact with the Philippines for the supply of defence material and equipment which are also likely to include BharhMos Cruise Missiles.
Delfin Lorenzana, the Defence Secretary of the Philippines, who also attended the agreement signing ceremony in Manila has stated that the Philippines will be buying BrahMos Missiles from India.
10. UNGA adopts India-sponsored resolution, declares 2023 as International Year of Millets
The 193 member United Nations General Assembly- UNGA has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. The India-sponsored resolution has been adopted by consensus and is supported by over 70 nations.
TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador shared the news and added that it is a big step to promote ecological and nutritional benefits of millets globally as a key component of the food basket and effective policy change.
11. India to commemorate ‘Chabahar Day’ on March 4
India will be commemorating ‘Chabahar Day’ on March 4, on the sidelines of the ongoing Maritime India Summit-2021, which is being held from March 2-4, 2021.
Ministers from Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan will participate in the event, as per Ministry of External Affairs.
12. Indigenously developed “Spectrograph” commissioned in Nainital
Indian Scientists at Aryabhatta Research Institute of observational sciences (ARIES), Nainital, have indigenously designed and developed a low-cost optical Spectrograph named as Aries-Devasthal Faint Object Spectrograph & Camera (ADFOSC).
13. Freedom House’s report: India declared as ‘partly free’
The US government funded NGO “Freedom House” published its annual report on global political rights and liberties recently. The report titled “Freedom in the World 2021 – Democracy under Siege” published the report on political freedom across the world.
