1. Eastern Command gets Raksha Mantri’s trophy for best service hospital

• Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar presented the Raksha Mantri’s Trophy and citation for the Best and Second Best Service Hospital in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
• The trophy for the best service hospital went to Command Hospital, Eastern Command, Kolkata, which was received by its Commandant Major General T S Ahluwalia.
• The trophy for the second best hospital was presented to INHS Asvini, Mumbai, which was received by its Commandant Surgeon Rear Admiral A A Pawar.

2. NMCG Signs MoU with Rotary India for the Success of Namami Gange

In its effort to make Namami Gange programme a mass movement with the involvement of more and more voluntary organisations, National Mission for Clean Ganga under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation signed an MoU with Rotary India in New Delhi . Rotary India will support clean Ganga mission through their WASH in Schools program in various schools.

4. Aadhaar number made mandatory for students to receive midday meals

• Students will now be required to have an Aadhaar number for getting their midday meals across the country.
• The HRD ministry issued a notification in this regard. This rule will be applicable across the country, except Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya and Assam.
• According to the ministry, the move is aimed at ensuring greater transparency and to increase overall efficiency.
• Of the total enrolment of 13.16 crore children, 10.03 crore children availed midday meal on an average basis in 11.50 lakh schools during 2015-16.

5. 100 districts in India Declared ODF under Swachh Bharat Mission

During occasion of “Swachh Shakti Saptah” in Gurugram Haryana. The Union Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar has informed that the number of ODF (Open Defecation Free) districts in India has crossed 100, making it a milestone achievement under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Besides, over 1.7 lakh villages over the country has also become ODF. Shri O.P Dhankar, Haryana Minister for Development & Panchayats, and Agriculture declared that Haryana will become an ODF State by November 2017.

6. GST Council clears Central GST and Integrated GST bills

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hhas cleared the crucial Central GST (CGST) and Integrated GST (IGST) bills, as the country moved a step closer towards implementing its biggest tax reform from July 1. The Centre will also levy and collect the IGST on all inter-State supply of goods and services. The IGST mechanism has been designed to ensure seamless flow of input tax credit from one state to another.

7. Kerala’s Capital Thiruvananthapuram Ranks Best City in Urban Governance Survey

• According to the fourth edition of the Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems 2016 by Bengaluru-based advocacy group Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala has been ranked as the top Indian city to manage urban governance.
• Thiruvananthapuram which also ranked No. 1 in 2015 was evaluated against 21 major cities across 18 states of India. Thiruvananthapuram followed by Pune and Kolkata which are in second and third position, respectively.
• Delhi that has a population of about 18 million has been ranked at a distant 9, behind much smaller cities such as Bhopal and Kanpur.

8. Government to launch ‘I am Trolled’ app for women

Women internet users threatened with physical violence or trolled on social media websites will be able to seek help from an ‘I am Trolled’ app to be launched soon by the government, Union minister Maneka Gandhi said. The app will be launched soon to counter physical violence threats and trolls on social media. It is unfortunate to see that women are equally abusive on social media as men.

9. ET Money ties up with HDFC Life to launch data-led insurance policy

• Long-term life insurance provider HDFC Life has launched an exclusive Data-Led Group Term Insurance Plan in partnership with personal finance app ET Money of Times Internet.
• This is the country’s first term insurance plan which is based on the spending pattern of the users. ET Money Benefit, the group term life insurance plan can be exclusively availed by 1 million users of the ET MONEY app.
• The group term life insurance coverage ranges from Rs 25-50 lakh and users can also save up to 30% of the premium paid as a tax benefit under section 80C of the Income Tax Act.

10. SBI to charge for breaching monthly average balance in saving accounts

• From the beginning of the next financial year (April 1), failing to maintain a monthly average balance (MAB) in your State Bank of India (SBI) savings accounts will attract a charge.
• SBI had suspended this charge in July 2012 to expand its customer base and generate low-cost deposits, as those in savings account earn interest rate of only 4 per cent.
• The bank said it is resuming the charge to partly cover costs for maintaining systems and operations of savings accounts. The charge will be calculated based on the gap between the MAB and the actual balance in the accounts.

11. 13th ECO Summit ISLAMABAD: 1st March 2017

• The Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) gathered on the occasion of the thirteenth ECO Summit Meeting, in Islamabad, Pakistan under the theme “Connectivity for Regional Prosperity”, at the invitation of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, on 1st March 2017.
• It aimed to review the objective conditions and progress in the implementation of ECO programs and projects.
• It also aimed to exchange views on regional and global issues of common interest to the ECO Region in consolidating ECO as an organization and bolstering cooperation. The headquarter of ECO is in Tehran, Iran

12. Iran successfully test-fired a sophisticated Russian-made air defence system

• Iran successfully test-fired a sophisticated Russian-made air defence system.
• The test targeted various flying objects, including missiles. With a range of up to 200 kilometres (125 miles) the S-300 is capable of simultaneously tracking and striking multiple targets.
• Russia delivered the S-300 system to Iran in 2016, nearly 10 years after the initial contract had been signed.
• Iran signed the $800-million contract to buy the S-300 missile system in 2007, but Russia suspended their delivery three years later because of strong objections from the United States and Israel.

13. Former MP, diplomat Syed Shahabuddin passes away at 82

Former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and MP Syed Shahabuddin, who was suffering from prolonged illness, died. He was 82 .Born in 1935 in Ranchi, now in Jharkhand, he joined the IFS in 1958 but took premature retirement in the 1970s to delve into politics. As a diplomat, he lobbied for the creation of Bangladesh and rallied support in Latin America — where he was posted at that time — for Indian intervention in the affair.

14. French football legend Raymond Kopa passes away

Real Madrid and France legend Raymond Kopa passed away aged 85In 1970. Kopa became the first footballer ever to be honoured with the Legion d’honneur – the highest civil merit awarded by the French government. The son of Polish immigrants, Kopa was born Raymond Kopaszewski and played for Angers in France’s second division before joining Stade de Reims in France’s top flight.
