To recognize the contribution of women cricketers, the BCCI for the first time, has introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award for Women.Former captain, Ms. Shanta Rangaswamy has been nominated for the award. She led India in 12 Test matches and in 16 ODIs. Apart from Mr. Vaman Viswanath Kumar and late Ramakant Desai have been nominated for the BCCI Special Award in recognition of their yeoman services to Indian Cricket.
- Rihanna receives Humanitarian award from Harvard University
Singer Rihanna has been honoured with the 2017 Harvard Humanitarian of the Year award. The 29-year-old singer was honoured by the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations for her work in her native island of Barbados and the charities she has founded over the years.
- N K Sinha takes additional charge of Tourism Secretary
Culture Secretary N K Sinha was given additional charge of the post of Secretary, Ministry of Tourism. The competent authority has approved the assignment of additional charge to Sinha, a 1980 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, with immediate effect.
G Latha Krishna Rao has been given additional charge of Secretary, Tribal Affairs. She is Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- Kohli first to be named India’s best international cricketer thrice
India captain Virat Kohli will be presented with the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award, given to BCCI’s International Cricketer of the Year, at the Annual Awards to be held in Bengaluru on March 8. Virat Kohli will become the first to receive the award thrice. He had won the award in 2011-12 and in 2014-15.
R Ashwin will also become the first to receive the Dilip Sardesai Award given to the top performer on the West Indies tour twice.
- Get all accounts on net banking by March 31: Govt to banks
The government may make all savings bank accounts automatically Internet-enabled by March 31, in another step to further ease the use of cashless transactions. Also, plans are afoot to provide RuPay cards to the maximum population through a mass circulation drive. As of now, 65 per cent of bank account holders are Internet banking-enabled and 35 per cent have not not linked their accounts to Internet banking. The government wants to make these accounts Internet-enabled by March 31.
- American Express launches ‘Buyer Initiated Payments’ to eliminate cheque, draft payments
Global leader in payment solutions American Express has announced the launch of Buyer Initiated Payments (BIP), an electronic payment platform linked to corporate card that reduces processing costs and offers extended payment terms compared to traditional invoice payments.
BIP enables companies to increase the Days Payable Outstanding (DPO) while still paying vendors on time. This web-based tool linked to Corporate Card fits and works within existing processes and includes reconciliation reporting that simplifies tracking vendor payments. BIP also helps organizations and their vendors to participate in the trading cycle digitally thus avoiding payments through cheques and drafts.
- Lakshmi Vilas Bank ties with Centrum for its wealthy clients
Centrum Group will offer wealth management services to rich clients of Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) as part of a tie-up. The bank will refer its high-networth individual (HNI) clients to Centrum Wealth Management, which will manage their investment portfolios. Centrum Wealth manages assets of around Rs10,000 crore. Lakshmi Vilas Bank’s customers are mostly in south India.
- Govt to allow online filing of officers’ performance reports
The Centre has decided to amend rules to allow online filing of performance reports of IAS and IPS officers. The move will help in checking delayed submission of the confidential reports and claims of bias in giving low ratings to an officer that affect his or her career growth. “Performance Appraisal Report shall be generated and written by the officer reported upon electronically as prescribed by the central government

- India test-fires indigenous supersonic interceptor missile
India has successfully test-fired its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude. This the second time that the missile has been test-fired in less than a month and is part of an effort to put in place a multi-layer missile defence system.
- 29th International Yoga Festival begins in Rishikesh
Uttarakhand Governor K K Paul has inaugurated the 29th edition of the InternationaI Yoga Festival at Rishikesh, and said the event was growing in stature and helping the state become a sought-after destination for spiritual tourism.The week-long event, jointly organised by the AYUSH ministry, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, Parmarth Niketan and Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, was inaugurated at Parmarth Niketan along the banks of the Ganges river.
- Russia, China veto UN sanctions on Syria
- Russia has cast its seventh veto to protect the Syrian government from United Nations Security Council action, blocking a bid by Western powers to impose sanctions over accusations of chemical weapons attacks during the six-year Syrian conflict.
- China backed Russia and cast its sixth veto on Syria. Russia had said the vote on the resolution, drafted by France, Britain and the United States, would harm U.N.-led peace talks between the warring Syrian parties in Geneva, which began last week.
- 15-year-old Indian para shooter sets junior world record
Two Indian shooters made impressive international debuts at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, (24 February), getting their first taste of the podium.India’s Pooja Agarwal (228.4) impressed at her first World Cup appearance, claiming silver. Agarwal showed her potential to challenge for the top of the podium, taking the lead from David in the fourth elimination round.Thailand’s Somporn Muangsiri (201.8) secured bronze, her first World Cup top three finish.
- Jitu Rai sets world record to win gold at ISSF World Cup
Ppistol shooters Jitu Rai and Amanpreet Singh winning gold and silver, respectively in men’s 50m free pistol at the ISSF Shooting World Cup. It was India’s first gold in the competition.In women’s 25m sports pistol, Thai shooter Yangpaiboon Naphaswan won gold.
- India wins bronze at World Women’s Chess Championship
Indian Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika won the bronze medal along with Swedish Grandmaster Pia Cramling by virtue of making it to the semifinals of World Women’s chess championship. Harika lost to the eventual winner Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine in the semifinals.
- Taarak Mehta famous gujarati writer passes away at age 87
Eminent humorist and playwright Taarak Mehta, best known for his Gujarati column “Duniya Ne Undha Chasma”, passed away at the age of 87 following a prolonged illness. “The writer died at 87 after a prolonged illness due to age-related problems at his residence in the city. Mehta’s columns, which first appeared in Gujarati weekly magazine ‘Chitralekha’ in 1971, were adapted into a TV serial, “Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma” in 2008, making him a household name across the country.
- Congress leader Haji Abdul Salam passes away
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Haji Abdul Salam passed away. He was 69. Haji Abdul Salam is the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of RS from Manipur. He has been representing the state in the upper house since 2014.He was elected to the 3rd, 6th and 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wabagai assembly constituency.
