  1. Haryana girl Manushi Chhillar crowned Miss India 2017

The 54th Femina Miss India World 2017 winner is Manushi Chhillar from Haryana, while the first runner-up is Sana Dua from Jammu and Kashmir and the second runner-up is Priyanka Kumari from Bihar. The event was held at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. Vinali Bhatnagar won the Miss Active crown whereas Vamika Nidhi won the special award of ‘Body Beautiful’.

Another Indian has become Miss World. And this one has muscles to show off as well. Dehradun’s Bhumika Sharma gained maximum points in three categories – individual posing, body posing and fall in that eventually bagged her the Miss World title and the gold medal at the world championship in Venice

  1. IDFC Bank elevates Sunil Kakar as MD and CEO for 3 Years

IDFC Ltd has announced the elevation of its CFO Sunil Kakar as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company with effect from July 16 (rpt) July 16 for three years. Kakar has also been appointed as additional director. Both the appointments are subject to shareholders’ approval at the annual general meeting (AGM).

  1. Jagannath Puri chariot festival begins

A sea of devotees, undeterred by the heavy downpour, thronged the town of Puri for the world famous annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings that began. Lakhs of people have congregated at the pilgrim town to witness Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra riding three giant wooden chariots to be pulled by the devotees on the Bada Danda (Grand Road) as they travel to Gundicha temple.

  1. June 26, 2017: International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

26 June, is observed as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The General Assembly decided to observe this day, in 1987, as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

This is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

  1. Aadhaar not valid for travel to Nepal, Bhutan: Home ministry

Aadhaar is not a valid identification document for Indians travelling to Nepal and Bhutan, the Union home ministry has said. Indians can travel to Nepal and Bhutan–both countries for which they don’t need visas–if they possess a valid national passport or election ID card issued by the Election Commission.

Moreover, to ease travel, persons over 65 and below 15 years can show documents with photographs to confirm their age and identity. These include PAN card, driving licence, Central Government Health Service (CGHS) card and ration card but not Aadhaar.

  1. ISRO-made chips to alert people at unmanned rail crossings

Satellite-based chip systems will now alert road users at unmanned level crossings about approaching trains and also help in tracking train movement on a real-time basis. On a pilot basis, the Mumbai and Guwahati Rajdhani trains will be equipped with this system.

Road users will be warned by hooters once a train approaches an unmanned level crossing as railways are installing ISRO-developed integrated circuit (IC) chips on locomotives of trains.

Roger Federer’s  6-1 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev . The Halle Open win was the hundredth title of his long and illustrious career, 92 of which are singles crowns while eight have come in doubles. He is 10th to reach this landmark in the history of professional Tennis.

  1. Ankush claims gold, Devendro gets silver at Mongolia boxing tournament

The fast-rising Ankush Dahiya (60kg) clinched a gold while the experienced L Devendro Singh (52kg) settled for a silver medal on the final day of the Ulaanbaatar Cup boxing tournament in Mongolia. The 19-year-old Ankush, who is a former Asian youth silver-medalist, defeated Korean Man Choe Chol in a split verdict, while Devendro lost to Indonesia’s Aldoms Suguro, again a split decision.

  1. Kidambi Srikanth wins Australia Open Super Series

India shuttler Kidambi Srikanth defeated Olympic champion Chen Long in a dominating fashion to win the Australia Open Super Series men’s singles title. Srikanth won in straight games 22-20, 21-16 to win his career’s fourth Super Series title.

  1. AnishBhanwala set a junior world record at World Championship

Indian shooter Anish Bhanwala won a gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Championship in the 25m Standard Pistol category, creating a junior world record. The previous record was held by Denis Koulakov, who shot a score of 574 in a competition held in Finland in 2002.

Anish broke the record with a score of 576 in three rounds. Anish had previously won a bronze medal at the Junior Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 27th Meeting of the Shooting Hopes which concluded in May. India finished with a highly commendable tally of 11 medals from the renowned international shooting competition in the Rifle and Pistol disciplines.

  1. Pharma firm Lupin’s Founder Desh Bandhu Gupta dies at 79

Desh Bandhu Gupta, founder and chairman of drugmaker Lupin Ltd, died. He was 79. Born in Rajgarh, Rajasthan, Gupta earned a master’s degree in chemistry and started his career as an associate professor at Birla Institute of Technology and Science at Pilani in Rajasthan. D.B. Gupta was one of the pillars of Indian pharma industry.

  1. Malayalam filmmaker KR Mohanan passes away at 69

Noted Malayalam film director K R Mohanan died following a brief illness. He was 69-year old and a former chairman of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. His popular films are Ashwathama’ in 1978, ‘Purushartham’ in 1987 and ‘Swaroopam’ in 1992. Mohanan was a recipient of state and national award for best films.
