1. National Reading Day: 19 June
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) celebrates National Reading Day annually on 19 June. The Day is celebrated to honour the father of the ‘Library Movement in Kerala’, the late P.N. Panicker, whose death anniversary falls on June 19.
In 2021, 26th National Reading Day is being celebrated. The week following June 19 will be observed as Reading Week and the entire month till July 18 will be observed as Reading Month.
2. World Competitiveness Index 2021: Switzerland tops ranking, India ranked 43rd
India maintained its 43rd rank on the World Competitiveness Index 2021, compiled by the Institute for Management Development (IMD). Switzerland topped the 2021 rankings, followed by Sweden at 2nd place.
World Competitiveness Rankings List comprises a total of 64 nations. Innovation, digitalization, welfare benefits, and social cohesion were key to economic performance in the 2021 rankings.
3. Environmental Organisation ‘Familial Forestry’ wins prestigious UN Award
The 2021 Land for Life Award has been won by Familial Forestry of Rajasthan, a unique concept that relates a tree with a family, making it a green “family member.” The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organises the Land for Life Award every two years to recognize excellence and innovation in efforts towards land in balance.
4. International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed globally on 19th June every year.
The day aims to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes.
5. UK and Australia agreed on historic free trade agreement
A new free trade agreement with the United Kingdom will deliver more Australian jobs and business opportunities for exporters, bringing both countries closer together in a changing strategic environment.
Prime Ministers Scott Morrison and Boris Johnson have agreed on the broad outlines of an Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
6. India and Bhutan ink MoU for developing cooperation in the areas of Environment
India and Bhutan on June 18, 2021, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for developing cooperation between the two nations in the areas of the environment.
The agreement was signed virtually from the Indian side by the Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar and from the Bhutanese side by the Chairperson of the National Environment Commission Lyonpo Dr. Tandi Dorji.
7. Track legend Milkha Singh passes away at 91
Track legend Milkha Singh passed away on June 18, 2021 due to post-COVID complications.He had tested positive for COVID-19 in May 2021. He was 91.
Milkha Singh’s family confirmed the news with an official statement that read, “It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away at 11.30 pm on the 18th of June 2021.”
8. Zambia’s first president Kenneth Kaunda passes away
Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first president and champion of African independence Kenneth Kaunda has passed away. He was 97.
Zambia’s current President Edgar Lungu shared the unfortunate news on his social media page on June 17, 2021. He informed that Zambia will see 21 days of mourning.
9. World’s third largest diamond unearthed in Botswana
Debswana Diamond Company on June 1, 2021, found the world’s third-largest diamond in the Jwaneng mine in Botswana, South Africa. Botswana is Africa’s largest producer of diamonds.
The stone weighing 1,098 carats was presented to President Mokgweetsi Masisi two weeks later of unearthing it.
