  1. India ranked top exporter of ICT services: UN report

India has been ranked the top exporter of information and communication technology services in a new UN report which highlighted the rise of the country as an emerging innovation center in Asia.

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in its 10th edition of the ‘Global Innovation Index (GII)’ ranked India 60th on its list of 130 most innovative countries in the world.

  1. 106th International Labour Conference, 2017

The 106th Session of International Labour Conference (ILC) was held from 5-16th June 2017. An Indian Tripartite Delegation led by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment (Independent Charge), Shri Bandaru Dattatreya participated in the ILC.

The Labour and Employment Minister informed about the amended Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017 that provides for paid maternity leave of 26 weeks which would encourage women into employment. The Minister delivered his speech in Hindi and ended his speech by reaffirming India’s commitment for promoting the welfare of the workers in and outside the country including promoting their skill development and protecting their rights.

  1. PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Kochi Metro

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the Kochi Metro, Kerala’s first Metro rail, and took an inaugural ride onboard the train with dignitaries, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan.

Claimed to be the country’s first integrated multi-model transport system, the Metro is expected to improve regional connectivity and ease the traffic congestion in Kochi, the commercial hub of Kerala. The first phase comprises a 13-km stretch between Aluva and Palarivattom.

Alarge crowd gathered at the CIAL convention centre in Nedumbassery in Ernakulam. People of all genders, and their children, were there to cheer on the participants of Queen of Dhwayah, 2017, the first beauty pageant for transgender women in Kerala.

  1. Sushma Swaraj inaugurates KIP for young overseas Indians

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has inaugurated Know India Programme (KIP) for young overseas Indians at a function in New Delhi. Mrs Swaraj said, the programme is aimed at promoting awareness on different facets of life in India and the progress made by the country in various fields such as economic and education.

The Know India Programme is a three-week orientation programme for the Indian diaspora. It provides a unique forum for students and young professionals of Indian origin to visit India, share their views, expectations and experiences and develop closer bonds with the contemporary India.

  1. London to open its underground postal railway network

A historic underground postal railway network in London is set to open on July 28. The Mail Rail was first opened in 1927 as an alternative way to transport mail throughout London. Believed to be the first driverless electric railway system, the 10-km-long network of narrow tunnels was closed in 2003.

  1. Switzerland agrees to share bank account info with India.

A £26m project backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund is rebuilding the Royal Mail museum at Mount Pleasant in central London to hold its vast collection and archives, and restoring a stretch of the railway as a visitor attraction.

  1. Srikanth beats world no. 1 to reach Indonesia Open final

Indian shuttler K Srikanth dished out a gritty performance to stun World No.1 Korean Son Wan Ho to reach the finals of the USD 1,000,000 Indonesia Super Series Premier. The 24-year-old from Guntur fought ferociously to outclass Son 21—15 18—21 24—22 in an energy-sapping men’s singles match that lasted an hour and 12 minutes.

  1. John Avildsen, Oscar-winning director of Rocky, dies aged 81

John Avildsen, the Oscar-winning director who made Hollywood’s quintessential underdog story in 1976 boxing saga “Rocky” with a then-unknown Sylvester Stallone, and crafted another inspiring tale in “The Karate Kid,” died on June 16, 2017 at age 81. Avildsen won the Academy Award for best director for “Rocky” while the film was named best picture and other successes included the “The Karate Kid” series in the 1980s. He directed seven actors to Oscar nominations.

  1. Harry Potter’ actor Sam Beazley dies at 101

Harry Potter actor Sam Beazley has died aged 101. Mr Beazley had started his acting career as a teenager on the stage, but left the profession to serve in World War Two. He ran an antique shop for several decades afterwards but returned to his first passion aged 75. Mr Beazley was also the Vicar in the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice and appeared in Foyle’s War and Midsomer Murders.
