- Muttiah Muralidaran becomes first Sri Lankan to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame
Muttiah Muralidaran, the most successful bowler in Tests and One Day Internationals, was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in London. The Sri Lankan spin great was honoured during the innings break of the India versus Sri Lanka Champions Trophy match at The Oval.
Muralidaran was awarded the honour along with Arthur Morris, George Lohmann and Karen Rolton by fellow ICC Cricket Hall of Famers and members of the media. He became the first player from Sri Lanka and the 83rd overall to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when ICC CEO Dave Richardson presented him with a commemorative framed cap.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved the appointment of Vikram Limaye, head of infrastructure lender IDFC Ltd, as the next chief executive of National Stock Exchange, subject to his resignation from a cricket committee.
Limaye is a member of a panel appointed by the Supreme Court to administer the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
- Civil Aviation Ministry to roll out ‘DigiYatra’ for air travelers
Civil Aviation Ministry is adding a digital experience for Air travelers through ‘DigiYatra’ Platform in New Delhi. This initiative aims at bringing together entire industry to develop a digital ecosystem that will deliver customers a seamless and paperless service experience at every stage of journey.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha stated that the initiative envisages providing airline travelers in India, a digitally unified flying experience across all stages of their journey.
The initiative will help passengers plan their trips efficiently by identifying price trends and estimate future airfares at the time of ticket booking. Passengers will also get relevant information pertaining to various facilities, protocols, airline timings, queue lengths at airports.
- New Projects Inaugurated at Kamarajar Port in Tamil Nadu
The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari has said that an investment of Rs 2 lakh 50000 crore is being made in Tamil Nadu under Sagarmala. Of this Rs.39,000 crore will be for port modernization, Rs.55,000 crore for port connectivity and Rs.1,50,000 crore for port led industrialization. The minister said this at Kamarajar Port in Chennai, where he inaugurated several new projects.
The projects include a New Container Terminal worth Rs.1270 crore, a new multi cargo terminal worth Rs.151 crores, Railway line to Container and Multi cargo terminal worth Rs. 60 crore, and RFID system worth Rs.11.82 crore. Shri Gadkari said the work being done under Sagarmala is estimated to create about 2 lakh direct jobs in the state in the next two years.
- India, UNOSSC launch partnership fund to promote sustainable development
India and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation have launched a partnership fund that will support sustainable development projects across the developing world.
The India-UN Development Partnership Fund will implement country-level projects that are catalytic towards achieving the 17 sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The initiative is aimed at reducing poverty and hunger, improving health, education and equality, and expanding access to clean water, energy and livelihoods.
- India, Pakistan become full members of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
India and Pakistan have became full members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China-dominated security grouping that is increasingly seen as a counterweight to NATO.
India’s membership was strongly pushed by Russia while Pakistan’s entry into the grouping was backed by China. With the expansion of the grouping, the SCO will now represent over 40 per cent of humanity and nearly 20 per cent of the global GDP.
- Ramkumar Ramanathan lifts ITF men’s Futures tennis title
India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan lifted the ITF (International Tennis Federation) men’s Futures tennis title after outplaying Raymond Sarmiento of the USA in straight sets in Singapore.
The top-seeded Indian beat the second seeded player 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the event. It was the first title of the season for Ramkumar. A regular in India’s Davis Cup team, Ramkumar had recently competed in the qualifying event of the French Open but failed to make it to the main round of the Grand Slam tournament.
- WHO revises antibiotics protocol
The World Health Organization (WHO) has divided the drugs into three categories — access, watch and reserve — specifying which are to be used for common ailments and which are to be kept for complicated diseases. Commonly used antibiotics will be under the ‘access’ category; the second line of antibiotics, slightly more potent, have been categorised under “watch” and potent drugs to be used only as a “last resort” fall under the ‘reserve’ category. This is the biggest revision of the antibiotics section in the 40-year history of the essential medicines list (EML).

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is the sole sportsperson from the country to feature among the world’s 100 highest paid athletes in the latest Forbes list topped by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. Kohli, 28, has been ranked 89th on the 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’ with a total pay of USD 22 million that includes USD three million from salary and winnings and another 19 million from endorsements.
- Noted historian, former ICHR chairman Basudev Chatterji passes away
Eminent historian Basudev Chatterji, also the former chairman of Indian Council for Historical Research passed away in Guwahati. Chatterji had been an academician and taught at St Stephen’s College in Delhi, University of Hyderabad besides supervising undergraduates at the University of Cambridge.
