  1. Param Jit Mann appointed as the next Ambassador of Indian to Republic Slovenia

Mr. Param Jit Mann, presently Ambassador of India to the Slovak Republic, has been appointed as the country’s next Ambassador to Slovenia. A press release form the Ministry of External Affairs said Mr. Mann, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1987 batch.

  1. Uttarkhand Governor Launches Vidya-Veerta Mission

Uttarakhand Governor K K Paul has launched the Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan in the state by presenting Vice Chancellors of universities with the portraits of Param Vir Chakra recipients. The Governor presented the portraits to VCs of state universities and representatives of colleges and these will be displayed at the institutions in an effort to send out a message that not only soldiers but every citizen and every youth of this country is responsible for the country’s safety.

  1. NSE to launch international exchange at GIFT city

Leading bourse National Stock Exchange (NSE) will launch its international exchange in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

NSE IFSC Ltd, the global exchange promoted by NSE, will remain operational for a longer period than NSE during a trading day. All the trades will be cleared and settled through NSE IFSC Clearing Corporations Ltd. Several products from the currency, commodity and equity segments are expected to get listed on the new exchange which may also introduce other innovative products in line with Sebi regulations.

  1. RCom-Aircel merged firm to be called Aircom

Anil Ambani owned Reliance Communications has finally revealed that the new RCom- Aircel merged entity will be called Aircom after the completion of the proposed deal.  The company also said that its lenders have agreed to a strategic restructuring plan under which it will get a 7-month to service loans amounting to Rs 45,000 crore.

  1. India slips to 45th spot in IMD’s World Competitiveness list

India has been ranked 45th, down four notches from last year, in terms of competitiveness in the annual rankings compiled by IMD which saw Hong Kong topping the list.

US was “pushed out” of the top three slots while Hong Kong consolidated its dominance of the annual rankings for the second year in the list compiled by the International Institute for Management Development’s (IMD) World Competitiveness Center.

  1. India tests indigenous Quick Reaction missile for 1st time

India test-fired its indigenously developed Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QR-SAM) for the first time from Chandipur, Odisha. The QR-SAM, developed jointly by DRDO and Bharat Electronics Ltd. for the Indian Army, is an all-weather, truck-mounted missile system with a range of 30 kilometres. It is intended to replace the Army and Navy’s ageing quick reaction air defence systems.

  1. SpaceX successfully launches recycled spaceship for 1st time

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket recovered at sea from its maiden flight last year blasted off again from Florida in the first successful launch of a recycled orbital-class booster, then capped the feat with another return landing on an ocean platform.

The unprecedented twin achievements of re-launching a used rocket and salvaging the vehicle yet again were hailed by billionaire SpaceX founder Elon Musk as a revolutionary step in his quest to slash launch costs and shorten intervals between space shots.

  1. India’s Sai Praneeth wins Thailand Open men’s singles title

Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth lifted his maiden Grand Prix gold title by posting a come-from-behind victory over Indonesian Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles final of the USD 1,20,000 Thailand Open.

The third seeded Indian prevailed 17-21 21-18 21-19 over the fourth seeded Indonesian in a contest that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.

This is Praneeth’s second consecutive title win, following the Singapore Open victory. He had reached the finals of Syed Modi International in January at Hyderabad.

  1. Veteran journalist T.S.V Hari dead

Veteran journalist T.S.V. Hari, a former IANS Bureau Chief in Chennai, died. Hari started as a crime reporter and later switched to political reporting.

He wrote for the Free Press Journal and later worked for Amrita Bazaar Patrika and Indian Express before joining IANS. He wrote for the satirical magazine “Thuglak” under the pseudonym Venkat, said V. Subramanian, a family friend. Hari wrote the Tamil script for B.R. Chopra’s Mahabarata tele-serial.
