- V. O. Chidambaranar Port bags National Award for Excellence in Cost Management
V.O. Chidambaranar Port has bagged the National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2016 from ‘The Institute of Cost Accountants of India’ under the category “Transportation and Logistics”.
The award has been given for exemplary performance and initiatives of V.O. Chidambaranar Port towards reduction of cost per tonne, optimization of manpower, the savings in electricity by installation of energy efficient LED lightings, implementation of solar energy systems, reduction of overall cost of handling by mechanization in port operation which resulted in improved efficiency, quick evacuation of cargo and reduction in logistics cost to the EXIM Trade.
- Exhibition “Traditional Head Gear of India” Begins in National Museum
Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Culture & Tourism inaugurated an exhibition entitled “Traditional Head Gear of India” organised by the National Museum in National Museum Complex, Janpath, New Delhi. This small exhibition is arranged to showcase printed turban, embroidered dopalli and Maratha stitched cap and zardozi cap.
- Setting UP of a High Altitude Cloud Observatory Near Munnar, Kerala
A high altitude cloud physics observatory has been established at Munnar (Kerala), in Western Ghats, the region which is the gateway for the monsoon of India.
High altitude cloud physics observatory at Munnar is used to observe clouds and rain processes over that region with state of the art observations. Such facility will enable understanding of rainfall distribution and will allow better characterization of rainfall processes in the numerical models used for prediction of monsoon rainfall.
- Mobile App for Road Maintenance “Aarambh launched
Union Minister Shri Tomar and ILO Deputy Director General(Policy) International Labour Organization Ms. Deborah Greenfield launched the following publications and Mobile App for Road Maintenance “Aarambh”.
This Mobile Phone App aims at use of GIS based mapping for making road inventories, condition surveys, and producing cost estimates and other relevant data for the preparation and monitoring of annual road maintenance plans.
Its usage would greatly enhance the service delivery of the state level institutions in planning and implementing performance based rural road maintenance contracts.
- Maneka Sanjay Gandhi launches Sexual Harassment electronic-Box (SHe-Box)
The Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi launched an online complaint management system titled Sexual Harassment electronic–Box (SHe-Box) for registering complaints related to sexual harassment at workplace in New Delhi.
The complaint management system has been developed to ensure the effective implementation of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act (the SH Act), 2013.
Those who had already filed a written complaint with the concerned Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) constituted under the SH Act are also eligible to file their complaint through this portal.
- India to Host Global Conference on Cyber Space 2017
India will be hosting the 5th Global Conference on Cyber Space (GCCS) in 2017, one of the world’s largest conference on Cyber Space and related issues” announced Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Themed on Cyber4All: An Inclusive, Sustainable, Developmental, Safe and Secure Cyberspace, the GCCS 2017 will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
To be held in India for the first time, the two-day conference will see participation of around 2000 delegates from senior Government officials, industry leaders, academia and civil society from over 100 countries. .
- Ministry of Rural Development to launch Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana
The Ministry of Rural Development will launch a new sub-scheme under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) which will be named as “Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana (AGEY)”.
The main objectives of AGEY are to provide an alternative source of livelihoods to members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) under DAY-NRLM by facilitating them to operate public transport services in backward rural areas.
The Government is implementing DAY-NRLM across the country in all States and Union Territories (except Delhi and Chandigarh). Under DAY-NRLM, till date, 34.4 lakh women SHGs have been promoted under the programme.
- Lok Sabha Amends Free, Compulsory Education Bill
The Lok Sabha has given its approval to a bill amending the law on free and compulsory education to extend the deadline for teachers to acquire the prescribed minimum qualifications for appointment.
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, Human Resource Development Ministery have adopted innovative ways to tackle with the problem of proxy teachers.
The Act was enacted to provide free and compulsory education to all children between the age of six and 14 years.
- India and Bangladesh Sign 22 Agreements, Discuss Water Sharing
India and Bangladesh have signed a pact to connect both the countries by waterways. The waterways will facilitate movement of passengers and goods between India’s northeast and West Bengal with Bangladesh.
Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya said in Agartala that infrastructure for the services would be set up along the major rivers in Bangladesh, West Bengal and Brahmaputra in Assam.
- Navy chief Lanba begins tour of Mozambique, Tanzania
Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba has begun an eight-day-long two-nation tour of Mozambique and Tanzania with an aim of exploring new avenues of bilateral defence cooperation.
Admiral Lanba, who also heads the powerful Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC), will be in Mozambique till July 25.
The visit aims to consolidate bilateral defence relations with Mozambique and Tanzania, as also to explore new avenues for defence cooperation
- Former ISRO Chairman Udupi Ramachandra Rao passed away
Eminent space scientist and former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman Udupi Ramachandra Rao passed away due to age-related ailments. He was 85.
Rao served as the chairman of ISRO for 10 years from 1984-1994. The eminent scientist, who was conferred a Padma Vibhushan earlier this year, was part of the Aryabhatta and Mars Orbiter Missions.
