1. Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft successfully launched by GSLV MkIII-M1

Chandrayaan-2, India’s 2nd moon mission (after Chandrayaan-1, 2008) was successfully launched by GSLV-MkIII-M1 from Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. This successful launch comes exactly a week after Missions’ liftoff was aborted due to a technical snag.

2. Lt Gen. Manoj Mukund Naravane appointed next Vice Chief of Indian Army

In a major rejig in Indian Army, Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane has been appointed as next vice-chief of armed force. He will succeed Lt Gen D Anbu who is set to retire on 31 August 2019.

Lt Gen M M Naravane will be in contention for Chief of Indian Army post as he will be the senior-most commander when incumbent Gen Bipin Rawat retires on 31 December 2019.

3. Boris Johnson elected UK Prime Minister

Boris Johnson was elected as the leader of Britain’s governing Conservative Party and the country’s next Prime Minister. Johnson will formally take over as Prime Minister on Wednesday, succeeding Theresa May, who stepped down over her failure to get parliament to ratify her Brexit deal. Johnson has in the past served as UK foreign minister and London’s Mayor.

4. Acharya Devvrat sworn in as the new governor of Gujarat on 22 July

Acharya Devvrat, 60, sworn in as the new governor of Gujarat on July 22. Gujarat high court’s acting chief justice Anant S Dave administered the oath of office at the Raj Bhavan on 22 July. Devvrat is the 20th governor of Gujarat. Acharya Devvrat has replaced O P Kohli. He was the governor of Himachal Pradesh.

5. Indian Navy commissions fifth Dornier Aircraft Squadron in Chennai

Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 313 It is the fifth Dornier aircraft squadron commissioned into the Indian Navy by Admiral Karambir Singh, PVSM AVSM ADC Chief of the Naval Staff. The ceremony held at Naval Air Enclave, Meenambakkam.

Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, AVSM, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Rear Admiral KJ Kumar VSM, Flag Officer and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA) present during the commissioning ceremony.

6. Maharashtra tops in ATM frauds, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka follow

Maharashtra reported 233 cases of ATM fraud in 2018-19, the highest in the entire country, Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) data, accessed by TOI, revealed. The data showed that Delhi grabbed the second spot with 179 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 147 cases of ATM fraud.

In Maharashtra, people lost Rs 4.8 crore to bank fraud, while in Delhi people lost Rs 2.9 crore. The country witnessed an increase in ATM fraud cases in general (up from 911 to 980).

7. Isner Makes History With Fourth Newport Title

John Isner lived up to his top seed status on Sunday at the Hall of Fame Open, becoming the first player to win four titles in Newport with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over seventh-seeded Kazakh Alexander Bublik.

“My very first ATP Tour event was here in 2007 and I didn’t enjoy the courts that much back then because I didn’t know how to play on them,” said Isner. “To say that I’ve won this event four times isn’t something I thought would be possible.”

8. Table Tennis: India tops medal tally with seven gold at Commonwealth C’ships

In Table Tennis, hosts India completed a clean sweep, claiming all the seven gold medals at the 21st Commonwealth Championships, in Cuttack. Harmeet Desai and Ayhika Mukherjee won the men’s and women’s singles titles. Harmeet defeated favourite G. Sathiyan 4-3 in a hard-fought final to claim the men’s singles title.

9. IAEA chief Yukiya Amano dies at 72

He has led the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2009, and was due to step down in March because of an unspecified illness. During his tenure he had overseen a period of tense negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. It is not yet clear who will succeed him, though discussions over his replacement began last week.

10. Kalraj Mishra takes oath as Governor of Himachal Pradesh

Former Union Minister Kalraj Mishra on Monday took oath as the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh in Shimla. The 78-year-old succeeded Acharya Devvrat after Devvrat was appointed as the new Governor of Gujarat. Mishra resigned as Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in 2017 after crossing the age of 75, BJP’s unofficial age limit for holding an elected post.

11. Adam Peaty wins 100m breaststroke world title for 3rd time

British swimmer Adam Peaty has won the 100m breaststroke world title for the third time with his victory at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Peaty’s compatriot James Wilby finished in the second spot while Yan Zibei of China ended in the third place. Notably, Wilby’s silver medal is his first World Championship medal.
