- Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli to be the new Chief Justice of Nepal
Gopal Prasad Parajuli who was sworn in as Nepal’s new chief justice. Parajuli, 61, was administered the oath of office by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at Rastrapati Bhawan in Sheetal Niwas.
He had taken charge of the Supreme Court as the acting chief justice on June 7 when Sushila Karki, the first female chief justice of the country
- Bharat Arun appointed as bowling coach
Acceding to newly-appointed chief coach Ravi Shastri’s demand, the BCCI has appointed Bharat Arun as the Indian cricket team’s bowling coach.
The decision to appoint Arun, on a two-year contract, was taken after Shastri met the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and BCCI officials, including acting President C K Khanna and Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary
- MoU Signed between Department of Defence Production and BEL
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Schedule ‘A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the financial year 2017-18 with the Ministry.
The revenue from operations has been targeted at Rs. 9000 crore. The Operating Profit to Revenue from Operations target has been set at 14 percent and PAT to Average Networth has been set at 15 percent.
- J-K govt launches weekly festival ‘Cultrue of Cruise’at Dal Lake
The spectacular Dal Lake here hosted first ever ‘Cultrue of Cruise’, a weeekly cultural programme organised by the Jammu and Kashmir government aimed to bring artists from various fields on one stage.
“The innovative programme series brings writers, performance artistes, musicians, poets and academics together and offers a program of performances, workshops, talks, forums and debates,” J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) Secretary Aziz Hajini said.
- Narendra Modi Cabinet reshuffle
As part of a Cabinet reshuffle during the ongoing monsoon session, Textile Minister Smriti Irani has been handed additional charge of Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
Narender Singh Tomar, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment will now be handling Urban development ministry as well.
The reshuffle follows the resignation of M Venkaiah Naidu, who held the above ministries, after he was announced NDA candidate for Vice President’s post.
- India & Sri Lanka sign MoU to develop village in Anuradhapura District
India and Sri Lanka have signed a MoU to develop a village in Anuradhapura District at a cost of 30 crores Sri Lankan rupees.
The village in the name of a famous Buddhist monk Sobitha Thero, envisages construction of 153 new houses, a multipurpose community building, internal water supply system and renovation of monk’s quarters & library.
- India stands 4th among fastest growing economies: World Bank
The latest World Bank report about the economic health of the member countries clearly says that while India is among the fastest growing economies – big and small, China is not doing as well.
Chinese economy is slowing down. The continued gradual slowdown in China will slightly offset a pickup in the rest of the region led by a rebound among commodity exporters. Growth in China is anticipated to slow to 6.5 percent this year and 6.3 percent in 2018.
- United Nations Peacekeeping Course for African Partners (UNPCAP-02) Commences at Manekshaw Centre
The Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) is conducting jointly with the US, the second edition of United Nations Peacekeeping Course for African Partners (UNPCAP-02) in New Delhi from 17 July to 04 Aug 2017.
The course is aimed to build and enhance the capacity of the African Troop Contributing Countries to the UN and to further train the trainers from these countries.
Course is being attended by officers from 19 countries including India.
The students include officers who are currently employed in their respective peacekeeping training centres in African peacekeeping training institutions.
- SBI launches website for home buyers
State Bank of India, the country’s largest commercial bank, has launched SBI Realty — a one-stop integrated website www.sbirealty.in for home buyers.
SBI Realty will help customers to choose their dream home from 3,000 SBI approved projects across the country.
These projects are spread across 13 states and Union Territories covering 30 cities, including metros, semi metro and towns.
- Singapore Airlines rated the best airline in the world
Singapore Airlines has been rated the world’s best airline in a survey by the Travel and Leisure magazine.
It has been followed by Emirates and Qatar Airways at second and third place respectively, while Cathay Pacific Airways and Japan Airlines have completed the top five.
Virgin Atlantic, Air New Zealand and Korean Air have also made it to the list.

- Harinder Pal Sandhu wins Victorian Open squash title
India’s Harinder Pal Sandhu continued his fine run by winning a second title in two weeks, beating top-seed Rex Hedrick of Australia 12-14, 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 in a 77-minute final of Victorian Open squash, a PSA Tour event, in Melbourne.

- Indian judokas win three bronze medals at Asian junior c’ship
Three Indian woman judokas won bronze medals in their respective categories at the recently- concluded Asian Junior Judo Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Preety, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, won the bronze in the below 44kg weight category while Delhi’s Pinckey Balhara won bronze in the below 52kg weight category.
Tulika Maan, who is also from Delhi, won a bronze in the above 78kg weight category. Maan had also competed in the Senior Asian Judo Championships held in May 2017 in Hong Kong, where she had finished seventh.
- Saroha wins club throw silver at World Para Athletics C’ship
Former national-level hockey player Amit Saroha has been wheelchair-bound, after a horrific a road accident in 2007 left him crippled.
The 32-year-old clinched silver medal in the club throw event in the F-51 category below waist paraplegic category at the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships in London. The event is the equivalent of the hammer throw, only para athletes throw a wooden club.
- 101-year-old woman sets 100-meter sprint world record
A 101-year-old Louisiana woman just set a new record for her age group by completing the 100-meter race in just over 40 seconds.
While setting the new record, Julia ‘Hurricane’ Hawkins also became the oldest female athlet to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championship.
- Oscar Winner Martin Landau Passes away at 89
Martin Landau, a talented and prolific character actor who achieved TV stardom in “Mission: Impossible” and won an Oscar for his portrayal of a washed-up Bela Lugosi in the sweetly bizarre 1994 film “Ed Wood,” has died at age 89.
