The 18th India International Film Awards’ main event has kicked off in New York. Bollywood actors, singers and several other celebrities have flocked to the ‘green carpet’ of one of the industry’s biggest awards night.
- Superwoman Lilly Singh appointed UNICEF’s Global Goodwill Ambassador
UNICEF has appointed Indian- origin Canadian YouTube star Lilly Singh as its newest Global Goodwill Ambassador.
Lilly was in the capital to support UNICEF’s Youth4Change initiative, a programme for youth that brings them together to support their peers and communities in taking action on issues such as health, hygiene, child labour and gender equality.
- Govt launches GST training programme
The government has launched a GST training programme to skill around two lakh youths in six months to handle tax compliance issues like invoice making. The people would be trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
The new training course would cater to the need of GST trained professionals to help businesses in areas such as registration and calculation of tax liability under the new tax regime.
- Matunga becomes India’s first railway station run by women
Central Railway has appointed all women staff at suburban Matunga station. Matunga station has thus become countrys first women special station.
A total of 30 women staffers, including 11 booking clerks, five RPF personnel, seven ticket checkers are working under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni since last two weeks.
- 89th Foundation Day of ICAR
On this day, July 16, 2017 is the 89th Foundation Day Celebration of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The ICAR is the premier organisation that had started Green Revolution in the country. Government Soil Health Card Scheme has been made successful by the institutions of ICAR.
Other initiatives include improvement of irrigation through Pradhan Mantri Gram Sinchai Yojana; increasing the effectiveness of water under Per Drop More Crop; and to increase the income of farmers, e-NAM has been started.
For the growth of agriculture and to cover the risks of farmers from climate adversities for agricultural development, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana has received a widespread approval as a major landmark policy.
- MobiKwik, Samsung Pay to enable one-tap payment solution for e-wallet users
Digital payments company MobiKwik has partnered Samsung Pay, under which consumers will be able to make payments with a single tap using select Samsung handsets.
As part of the tie-up, MobiKwik wallet is now integrated with Samsung Pay Mini to enable one-tap payments at more than 1.4 million MobiKwik-powered merchants across the country.
MobiKwik’s mobile wallet will also be available soon to Samsung Pay users.

Garbine Muguruza stormed to her first Wimbledon title and shattered Venus Williams’ history bid with a majestic 7—5, 6—0 victory in final.
Muguruza overwhelmed Williams with a supreme display of power hitting in 77 minutes on Centre Court to become only the second Spanish woman to win Wimbledon.
- Melo, Kubot clinch men’s doubles title in Wimbledon
The Brazilian-Polish men’s doubles pair of Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot took a marathon five sets to overcome Austrian-Croatian pair of Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the final of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
- Russia’s Vesnina-Makarova pair win women’s doubles Wimbledon title
Russian women’s doubles pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina thrashed Chan Hao-ching and Monica Niculescu in the final of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London.
This victory was the first for Russian tennis players at Wimbledon, while Vesnina made her way to the Wimbledon final in pairs for the third time in her career, Makarova did it for the second.
- India’s Damneet wins silver at IAFF World U-18 Championships
Indian hammer Dameet Singh grabbed a silver medal in boys’ hammer throw event to give India their first medal on the third day of the IAFF World U-18 Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
Mykhaylo Kokhan of Ukraine won the gold with a best throw of 82.31m while Raphael Winkelvoss of Germany took the bronze by clearing a distance of 71.78m.
- Maryam Mirzakhani, first woman to win Fields Medal in maths, dies at 40
Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian-born mathematician who was the first woman to win the coveted Fields Medal, has died in a US hospital after a battle with cancer. She was 40.
Mirzakhani, a professor at Stanford University in California, died after cancer she had been battling for four years spread to her bone marrow.
In 2014 Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Mathematics, which is awarded by the International Congress of Mathematicians.
